Underneath a part of Yasuni National Park lie an estimated 846 million barrels of oil worth
US$ 7 billion. In 2007, the government of Ecuador introduced a scheme saying that it will not
allow oil drilling in this part of Yasuni National Park. Keeping the oil in the ground will stop
400 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from going into the atmosphere. The oil will stay
underground if the rest of the world pays US$ 3.6 billion to the government of Ecuador as
compensation. By the end of 2013, not all compensation money had been paid to Ecuador
and the future of the scheme was uncertain.

Part of the Yasuni National Park is
home to the Waorani people who have
lived in the area for thousands of years.
Many people in Ecuador depend
on the oil industry for jobs.
The Yasuni National Park has a
‘species richness’ of trees,
amphibians, reptiles and bats and
is a protected nature reserve.
The Gross National Income (GNI) of
Ecuador is only US$ 4510 per person
per year. Almost half of the population
of Ecuador lives in poverty.

Many roads, health centres and schools
in rainforest areas of Ecuador were built
by oil companies.
The government of Ecuador is
still waiting to be paid most of
the US$ 3.6 billion.
The Napo Wildlife Centre, a tourist
lodge in the Yasuni National Park,
is very successful. Oil drilling
could mean that fewer tourists
would visit.
Ecuador’s oil reserves will
be gone in 30 years.
