THE MEDITERRANEAN AND EUROPE:
STORIES AND VIEWS ON CHANGING URBAN LANDSCAPES
Since the second half of the Twentieth Century to our days, Mediterranean and European cities have undergone, with different
paths and phases, deep transformations caused by: massive migratory flows both internal and international, great developments
in private motorization, major geopolitical upheavals that affected in particular – at the beginning of the Nineties – Eastern
Europe, Northern Africa and the Middle East, the wars that shocked and are still shocking several Mediterranean countries,
destroying whole cities or violating the urban texture.
Moreover, in the last decades, the planetary phase with its multiple processes of globalization forced many cities to redefine
their own identity under the pressure of major global transformations, pervasive digital and communicative innovations and
the sizable migratory flows that - in particular in Europe – determined the diffusion of multicultural cities.
In this way, the urban landscapes have deeply changed and are still today undergoing a process of transformation. Productive
activities, demographic compositions, housing habits, mobility needs, the ways to live spaces and time: all these have changed.
In many cities old urban textures came under violent transformations and in almost every city the suburbs expanded, often
profoundly disfiguring urban settlements and causing widespread social malaise.
The contest invites to watch, ponder, recount these transformations in their complexity, with a particular
attention to the dimension and positioning of the suburbs, to the urban and social decay that often marks
them, but also to the tangible experiences of requalification and revitalization that are underway, with
special reference to what Renzo Piano called “il rammendo” (the patching) of the suburbs.
