AND
THE
CITY
2
“ONE BELONGS TO NEW YORK INSTANTLY, ONE BELONGS TO IT AS
MUCH IN FIVE MINUTES AS IN FIVE YEARS.” —TOM WOLFE
Students come to FIDM from all over the world, to receive a top-notch education. The fact that our four campuses
are located in fashion, retail, and entertainment capitals in sunny California is a huge part of the draw. And while
hundreds of graduates each year remain in the Golden State, others are drawn to the bright lights and big city
of New York. The college’s ties to the Big Apple have always been strong, from our annual Study Tours, where
students spend a week in the city, to exciting industry events and our thriving FIDM Alumni Chapter (the last
holiday mixer featured over 100 attendees).
We recently caught up with six FIDM graduates who are living, working, and succeeding in New York City to
learn more about what brought them there, how the city inspires them, and the challenge and benefits of living in
the most famous metropolis on earth.
“I’ve actually moved to New York City three times now,” reported Merchandise Marketing and Business Management graduate Brenda Silva ’12, an expert marketer and
founder of BXNY, a company that helps independent brands grow. “I’d wanted to live
here since I was six years old and was just waiting for the right opportunity to come
along.” Brenda said that the city can be tough, especially on those who don’t have a
thick skin.
"THIS IS A PLACE WHERE YOU KNOW
THINGS HAPPEN. EVERYONE HERE,
FROM THE SUBWAY PERFORMERS TO
THE BIG GUYS ON WALL STREET, ARE
ALL WORKING HARD, AND BEING
SURROUNDED BY THAT IS INSPIRING.
IT MAKES YOU WORK HARDER AND
PUSH YOURSELF TO YOUR LIMITS."
Merchandise Marketing graduate Alexander Sikkema ’08, who is originally from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, is currently the manager of social media at
Ann Taylor. He moved to New York City after graduating “for a year of fun,” but
he blossomed in the fashion industry doing social media. “I love how you can
hop on a train and have a different experience in each of the neighborhoods,”
he said. “You never know where the night will take you or whom you’ll meet.”
Arnold Jeremy Castro ’09, who has degrees in Apparel Industry Management and
Business Management, is the director of marketing for Authentic Brands Group, which
includes Jones New York, Tretorn, Frederick’s of Hollywood, and a secured strategic
partnership with Shaquille O’Neal. Arnold oversees the marketing budgets and the implementation of marketing projects with his team. Of his move to New York City in 2010,
he said, “The company I was at was acquired by ABG, and I received the opportunity
to continue and expand in a new role, but it meant moving. The city never sleeps and
presents countless opportunities. This is a place where everyone can get ahead if they
decide to make the move.”
4
Beauty Industry Merchandising & Marketing graduate and Yvonne Kai ’10 first moved
to New York to take a job with Estée Lauder, before working for a boutique beauty
public relations firm. She recently started her own holistic beauty company, Come
Clean Pop Culture Soap, and still finds New York to be full of inspiration, great ideas,
and cultural events. “Working in New York allows you to touch all parts of the country and world because it’s such a hub for innovation,” said Yvonne, who recently collaborated on soaps with Joseph Gordon-Levitt for Pivot TV and Rihanna for PUMA.
“I MOVED TO NYC AT THE END OF
2013, LITERALLY THE DAY AFTER
CHRISTMAS, BECAUSE I WANTED TO
WAKE UP IN A NEW CITY,”
explained Business Management alumnus Michael William G. ’14. “After spending several years in San Francisco, where I enjoyed the city's then-unique culture, I knew it was
getting me ready for something bigger.” Within a year of moving to the city, Michael was
styling for publications such as Vogue, Modern Lady, and Time Out New York, among
other clients. In September of 2015, he launched MAN’edged Magazine, a men’s online
fashion outlet. “New York makes you grow, and grow fast,” he said. “It teaches you to ask
the right questions and get to the point, and the energy this city offers always makes
you feel like you need to keep moving.”
Fashion Design alumna Archana Archana ’07 noted, “New York City moves at warp
speed, constantly, and you’ve got to love that energy to live here. You’re either going to
love it or you’re absolutely going to hate it. There is no middle ground—this city can be
unforgiving like that.” As a senior account manager for Intertek, Archana has lived in different parts of the city, from Astoria to Turtle Bay to Washington Heights. “It’s called the
greatest city in the world for a reason,” she explained. “There’s the innumerable cultural
resources like the museums, music, and art, then there’s food, architecture, and the
people. At every turn, whatever your source of inspiration, you can find it here.”

The four-year-old company—which crafts it's design using 100 percent Japanese
cottons—recently showed their Fall/Winter ’16 Man | Woman

whether it’s simply walking the streets, being
surrounded by iconic landmarks, or the dynamic culture.

she said. “I love being able to walk outside my apartment and having the Empire
State Building at my first glance, then the High Line; it's just amazing and still
shocking to me, how I've been able to make it here in such short time with the
help and opportunity of the connections I've made since the day I arrived.”
It helped that Anne Marie had a lot of experience
prior to making the move from California to New York.
After graduating from FIDM, she was a freelance designer at Gap Inc., where she worked with former
creative director Todd Oldham, and later worked
as a menswear designer at Welcome Stranger and
also as a freelance personal stylist.
After moving to the city in 2014 (with no job or income, but a lot of moxie), Anne Marie landed a job
as a designer at Calvin Klein, where she worked for
a year before launching Max ’n Chester with partner
and creative director Peter Trainor. The brand has
garnered press from Women’s Wear Daily, GQ, and
Esquire, among other publications, and looks forward
to opening a storefront in New York.
While Anne Marie has no plans to leave her adopted city of New York, she credits FIDM with helping
her prepare for this fast-paced, successful career.
“The San Francisco FIDM staff has been so close to
my heart. I have nothing but the utmost respect and
forever grateful for their help and support until this
very day,” she said.

Laurence ’07 and Graphic Design alumnus Christian Ojeda ’07 are the design
duo and real-life couple (they are currently engaged) behind cool-girl label Valley High, which was founded in 2014. “We
design for the girls that like wearing their boyfriend's clothes but also like to put on a dress or skirt when the
occasion calls for it, and it’s still within their edgy style,” said Chanelle, a popular fashion blogger who has been profiled
on Racked LA. Christian added, “I like bringing items to the market that I can’t find already, or really perfecting pieces
that I like but just aren’t fully there.” For Fall ’16, expect to find customized prints, streetwear-style graphics, and
vintage-inspired separates that strike the perfect balance between girly and tough. Visit valley-high.com to learn more.

in addition to his busy schedule at FIDM’s Los Angeles campus,
Tom owns and runs a cooking brand, The Cooking Lady, and has
a cookbook coming out this fall. He also runs a boutique marketing company, Thunder Communications, and has clients in beauty,
fashion, and food—all areas he’s passionate about.
Tom, who is an Emmy Award–winning journalist, credits FIDM and
its students with keeping him young at heart. “They come to campus every day with creative, inspired ideas; they think outside the
box and push boundaries. So many of us lose that as we get older,” he explained. On a personal note, he completed his first marathon in February and plans to stay in shape for AIDS/LifeCycle
2017 (which he does every other year), a 545-mile bike ride from
San Francisco to L.A. “In 2015 I raised over $11,000, and I'm hoping
to raise over $15,000 next time,” he reported.

DURING THE WEEK OF HIS
GRADUATION FROM FIDM,
FASHION DESIGN ALUMNUS
CAMERON GARDNER ’08
FLEW TO NEW YORK CITY TO
INTERVIEW AT TORY BURCH...
where he was promptly asked to come
back two weeks later to start working in
handbag and accessories design. “I had
always wanted to end up in New York,
so when it became evident that I would
have to enter the workforce after graduation, I beat down doors and was lucky
and ambitious enough to fool someone
into a job,” he recalled. “I love the access
to all kinds of worlds: theater, art, food—
it's all here.”
After nearly five years at Tory Burch,
Cameron began consulting for brands
such as Ann Taylor, Land’s End, Diesel,
Calvin Klein Platinum, India Hicks, and
Anne Klein. Today, he is the creative
director/owner of his own eponymous
luxury leather goods company, Cameron Scott Gardner. “From an aesthetic
point of view, I wanted to stay true to
my personal taste, pushing something
that’s a bit sexier and more refined—adjectives you might not associate with
American-made,” said Cameron, who is
originally from Jenison, Michigan.
The line, inspired by the artisanal and
craftsman movements, utilizes American-based vendors and manufacturers
as well as established European suppliers for leather and zippers. Current
offerings include slim card cases, backpacks, duffle bags, and totes that range
in price from $100 to $1,250. Of his new
role as entrepreneur, Cameron said, “I
love the freedom that it allows me, but
it also comes with no time off. It’s not
for the faint of heart; you have to really
know who you are as a person and as a
designer and stand strong in that.”

IN LOVING MEMORY OF
MARLENE
MORBITT-DUNN
It is with great sadness that we share the passing of alumna Marlene Morbitt-Dunn,
FIDM Department Chair of Digital Media, Graphic Design, and Merchandise
Marketing, on October 19, 2015 after a courageous battle with cancer. A warm and
genuine person, who many FIDM staff and faculty considered a mentor, confidant,
and friend, Marlene cared deeply for FIDM students and alumni and worked
diligently to create a strong curriculum and industry relationships. A native of
Columbus, Ohio, Marlene arrived in Los Angeles in 1971 to attend college at FIDM
and work at Bullock’s department store. Before joining the staff of her alma mater,
she was a buyer of girls’ accessories and sleepwear for J.W. Robinson’s
Department Stores.
She was a member of the National Advisory Board and served on the Executive
Committee of DECA (an organization that fosters emerging leaders in high schools
12
and colleges around the globe). In her 30 years working with DECA, she helped
create iconic events and co-chaired the Alumni Committee. As an Education Member of
the National Retail Federation (NRF), she attended its USA conferences and was involved
with the NRF Foundation, for many years.
Matthew Shay, President and CEO of the National Retail Foundation said, “Marlene
Morbitt-Dunn has been involved with the NRF Foundation, for many years, and there has
been no bigger champion of our work. Our entire team knew and thought highly of
Marlene, who was notorious for sending us thank-you notes and words of encouragement
for even the smallest things. She had a real passion for getting students excited about
retail. The NRF Foundation and our industry broadly have lost a true advocate. We will
miss Marlene greatly, as will many of you who had the fortune to interact with her.”
Alan Hunter, President & Chief Creative Officer, Petrol Advertising, called Marlene “a
beacon of positive energy and spirit,” while David Lee, CEO, Signal Snowboards, said,
“What an amazing woman, full of love and light.” We express our deepest sympathy to
Marlene’s husband, Gary, loving sisters Patti Mindigo and Benni Harding, and family.
Two scholarships have been set up in Marlene’s honor:

In September, the Los Angeles Chapter hosted a Stylist Panel at FIDM, featuring E!’s Lindsay Albanese ’01,
celebrity stylist Daniel Musto ’05, and wardrobe stylist
Suzi Grgurich. “As an aspiring stylist, the panel was so
informative because it gave me firsthand information
from industry professionals,” said Chelsey Nicole ’15.
Dallas Beaulieu ’15 added: “The panel was so incredible and really opened my eyes to the various opportunities in the industry.”
The Italian restaurant Catania, in La Jolla, was the site
of the San Diego Alumni Chapter’s Fashion Week San
Diego Kick Off Mixer in September. “Besides the beautiful space and delicious food, it was fun to talk about
my experience and career path with Madewell and ask
questions to soon-to-be and recent FIDM grads,” explained Courtney McEntire ’10.
In November, the Los Angeles Chapter hosted the
Business of Blogging Panel at the L.A. campus, featuring style vlogger Lindsay Albanese ’01, Instagram fitness star Mandy Martini ’09, Forever 21’s Global Social
Media Manager and FIDM Instructor Mario Moreno, and
social media talent agent Christina Jones. FIDM Instructor
Tom Henkenius moderated. “The panel was a vivid and
exciting look into the expansive world of social media
as a business marketing tool—I’m not sure I could have
learned this anywhere else,” said Kayla Coleman ’14.
The San Francisco Chapter hosted its Alumni Holiday
Luncheon last November at Neiman Marcus Rotunda
Café. “I really enjoy networking with fellow alumni from
FIDM,” said Maile Trapani ’01. “It was a great way to see
what’s going on in the fashion industry while enjoying an
amazing meal. I have made really great contacts who
blossomed into friends.”
October brought the return of the 2nd annual OC
Schmooze Event, featuring some of the top employer names in actions sports and retail. “I was shocked
at how open and free people were to give advice out,”
said Erika Ochoa ’15 of the networking event that was
hosted at the Orange County campus. “I met some
amazing people from PacSun and even some local
business owners.”
Members of the Seattle Alumni Chapter enjoyed a festive Holiday Luncheon at Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery
featuring fare from local sustainable farmers and paired
wines. “Alumni networked while discussing current trends
and industry opportunities,” said Ciel Kullman ’01 of the
event, which featured a dozen raffle items and a private
tour of the winery. “Everyone had a wonderful time.”
The Philadelphia Alumni Chapter hosted a brunch
event in October. Said Ryan Swift '07, "I had just moved
from Los Angeles to Philadelphia only a month ago and
was starting to feel homesick. It was great to meet with
other FIDM alumni. Who would of thought to move all
the way across the country and find there is an extension of the FIDM family. This really helped to settle into
a new city."
In December, more than 100 graduates attended the
New York Chapter’s Holiday Mixer at Norwood Club. “The
decor is super artsy and a great place to entertain a large
group,” said Bryn Roberts-Le Farge ’05. “Being a membership club, the fact that we got to go in and explore
was a great thing to experience. We have a great group
of alumni in the New York City area who look forward to
these events.”

Academy Award–winning costume
designer Colleen Atwood visited
FIDM Los Angeles in January to speak
to students about collaborating
with top directors such as Tim
Burton and Rob Marshall on over
65 films. With 11 Academy Award
nominations and three wins—for
Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha, and
Alice in Wonderland—the acclaimed
designer is at the top of her field
(and as a bonus, she often hires
FIDM graduates on her crews). She
talked about everything from her
research process and career turning
point to changes in the film industry
and advice for aspiring costume
designers. “Our industry appears to
be glamorous, but it is really hard
work,” she said. “Be amenable to all
the people you work with and don’t
bring a big sense of entitlement to
the job. If you work hard, people will
notice and call you back.”
Interior Design alumna Elizabeth
Ribons ’82, ASID, CID, who has
enjoyed a 20-year career as an
interior designer and principal of
Environments Design Group, was
the guest speaker at an FIDM Career
Ambassadors meeting in February.
She shared experiences in the field,
tips on how to be a successful
freelancer, and how she grew her
business and created her own path.
“I spoke about how most designers
will run their own business,” she
explained, “be it freelance or
all the way to a firm.” She also
chatted about her latest venture,
Better by Design, a series of online
mentoring courses that will help
take designers into their first project
and beyond, alongside the best
practices for growing their business.
“I think it’s important for those who
have been successful to share with
the incoming professionals their
wisdom and experience,” she said.

ART OF
MOTION PICTURE COSTUME DESIGN
FIDM’s Museum & Galleries recently celebrated its 24th
year hosting the world-renowned exhibition “Art of Motion
Picture Costume Design” with a stylish soiree that was attended
by
Costume
Designers
Guild
President
Salvador
Perez
(The Mindy Project, Pitch Perfect 2), FIDM Alumni, and costume
designers such as Arianne Phillips, Jenny Eagan, Nancy Steiner, and
Jacqueline West. Representing the past year in cinema, more
than 100 costumes were on display from 23 films such as
Beasts of No Nation, Brooklyn, Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force
Awakens, Straight Outta Compton, The Hateful Eight, Pitch
Perfect 2, and Trumbo. The exhibition features all five Academy
Award nominees for Best Costume Design: Carol (Sandy Powell),
Cinderella (Sandy Powell), The Danish Girl (Paco Delgado),
Mad Max: Fury Road (winner Jenny Beavan), and The Revenant
(Jacqueline West).
Costumes designed by FIDM alumnas Soyon An (Jem and the
Holograms) and Mary Claire Hannan ’97 (The Longest Ride) were
also on view at the exhibition. As a tradition, the exhibition also
saluted and displayed the former year's Oscar® winner for Best
Costume Design, The Grand Budapest Hotel. “I loved the Star
Wars costumes, the Cinderella dress, and seeing The Revenant
costumes,” reported Dawn Orlow Townsend ’91. “The food is
always fabulous and the people are dressed to the nines.”
