SILK PURSE ART CAMP THEMES | SUMMER 2015 Impressive Impressions Let's take a trip back to 19th century France when a revolutionary way of painting was developing. This week will be focused on understanding light, and numerous brushwork techniques used in Impressionist works. We will focus on sketching and painting, while exploring one of the most popular art movements. Artists we study will include: Claude Monet, Edgar Degas and Vincent van Gogh. Environmental artists; Christo, Andy Goldsworthy and Nancy Holt will be studied to complement this program. We will build our own sacred space after completing some fun explorative drawing and paintings. Art historical tales about Machu Picchu, The Reign of Ramses and Akenahten, as well as Brunelleschi will be woven into our day. Studying Master works from art history such as Giotto and Fra Angelico, we will learn how to render a face and neck with accurate proportion and practice the art of composition. Lots of drawing and painting, and some model sitting will balance with our time outdoors as we learn the how and whys of Iconography. Focusing on virtue, students will build a list of tremendously desirable virtues to practice, thereby amplifying their art with messages such as kindness, love and charity. Two and Three-dimensional work will be created, with many creative options for each individual. Children will learn how to use their primary visual cortex to benefit their nature studies, working towards precise accuracy. Great painters and naturalists will be studied to compliment this program as we render a number of drawings and paintings. We will be working outdoors and focusing on ocean life in two and three-dimensional projects aimed at elongating our summer enjoyment as we learn from great works by regional prominent artists Toni Onley and Tak Tanabe. Aug 24-28 5 - 7 years 9:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. Barcode #1002080 8 - 11 yrs. 1 - 3:30p.m. Barcode #1002097 Sioux Bonderove is an artist with 20 years of teaching experience on the North Shore. Her expertise is with children and youth working in both visual and performance art of all styles and genres. She is a trained Montessori teacher and obtained her BFA from Emily Carr University in Vancouver. Her work has been shown in Canada, Mexico and Australia as she continues to develop her own artistic practice. Sioux is also a yoga instructor who works in mindfulness, mentoring and meditative practices. Zoë Richards is starting her third year at Queen’s University in the fall. She is an Art History major and hopes to be able to apply her knowledge in this subject to everyday camp life. This will be her third year as assistant instructor and fourth year working with the camp. Prior to this, she was fortunate to have attended the camps for many years when she was a child. Zoë is a graduate of Pauline Johnson Elementary and Sentinel Secondary School and has her bilingual certificate in French and English. In the future, she hopes to work internationally in the art world. She looks forward to assisting Sioux Bonderove again for another fun-filled summer at the Silk Purse Studio!
