During a study of the oligochaete fauna of the Ivano-Arakhlei lakes
(Irgen t , B. Undugun, Shaksha, Arakhlei, Ivan), the samples were found
to contain Rhyacodrilus sibiricus worms. Encountered together with Rh.
coccineus (Vejdovsky), this species frequently predominated in numbers
in lakes Irgen' and Ivan.
The worms were also found over wintering in
frozen earth along the shore.
Length of worms up to 40 mm, thickness 0.8-1.2 mm, number of
segments up to 140. Prostomium in living worms slightly elongated,
tapered; in the form of a regular triangle in fixed worms. Anterior
segments biannulate, posterior ring wider than anterior one and bears
bundles of setae. Natural colour light pink, blood vessels clearly visible
through integuments.

Ventral bundles of anterior segments of body with 6-8 (up to 10)
setae averaging 177.5 u in length. Setae with teeth of equal thickness
and distal tooth slightly longer than proximal one up to midline of
body .(see fig, a). Each bundle closer to posterior end with 4-5 setae
127-150 p long, with teeth of equal length, but distal one thinner than
proximal one (see fig, b).
Dorsal bundles of anterior segments (2nd to 8th) with 4-6 capillary
setae up to 500 p long and 5-7 flabellate setae 127-132 p long, with marginal
teeth mostly of equal length and thin membrane between them (see fig, c).
In certain worms capillary setae may extend to 11-13th segments, but on
these segments each bundle will contain one short seta. Dorsal bundles
behind clitellum for the most part each contain 3 bicuspid setae 135-150 P
long with teeth of equal length, but distal one less curved than proximal one.
4-6 penial setae 126 it long with toothless, curved distal end on llth
segment, ventral to pseudopenises (see fig, d).

Pharynx and pharyngeal recess occupy lst-3rd segments.
Pharyngeal
recess small with poorly developed chromophylic lining. Oesophagus short,
in 3rd-4th segments. Chloragogen tissue of small granular cells begins
at 4/5th intersegmental septUm and appears porous and poorly developed
throughout the intestine.
Ventral blood vessel thicker than dorsal one.
Thickened transverse
vessels ("hearts") lacking. Coelom contains mass of coelomocytes 13-16 p
in size.
Cerebral ganglion spherical (length 140 p , height 100 p , width
120 P ).
Clitellum occupies 10-12th segments and part of 13th segment.
Spermathecal pores on 10th segment, near 9/10th intersegmental furrow in
line with bundles of ventral setae. Distal parts of efferent portions
of male gonoducts protruding in the form of pseudopenises located dorsally
to penial setae on llth segment, closer to 11/12th intersegmental furrow.
Seminal funnels on 10/11th intersegmental septum 165 p in diameter.
Sperm duct 360 P long, 38 Pwide, not coiled, shorter than width of llth
segment (445 u), falls into proximal part of atrium slightly below apex.
Ampulla of atrium narrows at distal end, lined with highly ciliated
epithelium. Length of ampulla approximately 200 p, diameter 100-111p.
Prostate gland fairly large, surrounds atrium in a layer up to 120 p.
Efferent part of male gonoduct up to 200 p long and sometimes exceeds
length of atrial ampulla. Its distal part reinforced with longitudinal
and circular muscles and constantly overlaps body wall by 130 p in the
form of pseudopenis.
Diameter of efferent part 44.5 p
Spermathecal ampulla ovate, 300 x 200 p .
(see fig, e).
Efferent part short,
80-114 p , diameter 85 p . Wall of efferent 13-20p thick, formed of
strong radial muscles (see fig, f).
Testis occupies 3/4 width of 10th
4
segment, approximately 100 y in cross-section, lobed. Ovary narrow,
long, rises to dorsal side of llth segment.
Seminal vesicles unpaired, large, occupy large part of segments.
Anterior seminal vesicle located in 9th segment, posterior one in 11-19th
segments. Ovisac unpaired, extends to 22nd segment.
Species diagnosis. Prostomium in fixed worms in the form of a
regular triangle.
Anterior segments biannulate, anterior ring narrower
than posterior one. Ventral bundles of anterior part of body contain 6-8
(up to 10) setae with teeth of equal thickness, but distal one slightly
longer than proximal one. Ventral bundles in postclitellar part with
4-5 setae and proximal tooth more curved and thicker than distal one.
Dorsal bundles on anterior part of body (2nd to 8th segments) each contain
4-6 capillary setae and 5-7 flabellate ones with thin membrane between
marginal teeth (mostly of equal length). Capillary setae in most worms
extend to clitellum, sometimes to 13th segment.
Clitellum on 10-13th segments.
"Hearts" lacking.
Ventral
blood vessel thicker than dorsal one. Spermathecal openings on 10th
segment, near 9/10th intersegmental furrow. Spermathecae ovate, with short
muscular efferent.
Male gonopores located on ends of pseudopenises
overlapping body wall by 130 p . Efferent of male gonoduct as long or
longer than atrial ampulla. Gonoduct short, not coiled. 4-6 penial setae
in each bundle, with toothless distal end.
Body length up to 40 mm,
number of segments up to 140.
Holotype: sample No. 34, Lake Irgen t , 200 m from eastern shore,
depth 0.8 m, collected with hand net on May 27, 1968.
Total specimen
34-1. Kept at Inland Waters Biology Institute of the USSR Academy of
Sciences.
(40)
Paratypes: same location as holotype, 160 specimens, series of
sections 34-1(1), 34-1(2), 3 slides each.
Kept at the same place.
Rhyacodrilus sibiricus sp. n., in our opinion, occupies a special
place among the species of Rhyacodrilus Bretscher as to the structure of
the male gonoduct (the presence of an non-retractable pseudopenis). In .
this important taxonomic feature it is closest to Rh. sinicus (Chen, 1940)
and Rh. sokolskajae Semernoj, 1970 (Semernoi, 1970). These species are
distinguished by the presence in the last two of retractable pseudopenises.
Besides that, they differ greatly in the nature of the setal structure
(arrangement, number, size and form of the setae).
