FIX IT RIGHT Two days ago I started to replace the overhead light in my office with a ceiling fan. The brace that held the light fixture needed to be replaced with the stronger brace for the fan. Two screws held the former in place. One came out easily; the other would not budge, even after I applied some lubricating oil and tapped it. The next day I asked someone at church for suggestions. He handed me a spray can of Blaster PB®. According to the directions, I needed to wait a few minutes after applying it to the stubborn screw. While waiting, I read the claims printed on the can. I am not endorsing this product, but the claims are great material for a devotional. So let me share a few. The spray has a “revolutionary penetrating magnetic lubricant.” Christ brings about a revolutionary change in a person; the old self is gone (2 Corinthians 5:17). God’s word penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow (Hebrews 4:12b). The Lord’s promises of help are a lubricant, to “make the rough places smooth” (Isaiah 42:16). The Blaster PB can states it is “as seen on TV” and, if used, will “fix it right.” The source of scripture is not on TV; it “is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16). The only right way to fix what is wrong in our life is to trust in Jesus; He is “the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:1). The spray “frees everything faster” and is good on “stuck, rusted, and squeaky joints.” And the can provides a “pinpoint spray” to go precisely where needed. You can spot stuck, rusted, or squeaky Christians. They seem not to grow spiritually and have rusted into the pews. If they do move, they make enough noise to let you know there is movement, but it is not very smooth. “God knows the thoughts the thoughts of man; He knows they are futile” (Psalm 94:11). So when Jesus said, “you will know the truth and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31) He was talking about getting unstuck from sin. The manufacturer asserts it “corrects stubborn leaky toilets.” There are differences between standing firm versus being stubborn. If we do not stand firm in our faith, we will not stand at all (Isaiah 7:9). To be stubborn, on the other hand, is refusing to change in the face of overwhelming evidence. Like the huge water bill indicating a leak. Perhaps you have met a stubborn leaky toilet; someone who refuses to admit their “little” sin can have big consequences. They are, as the prophet Isaiah writes, “Ever hearing but never understanding … ever seeing but never perceiving” (6:9, 10). Their hearts are calloused, so they will never be healed. Unless we are as persistent as they are stubborn. Lastly, Blaster PB claims their spray works because the “catalyst has no equal” and has a “high flashpoint.” Christians and Jews believe “the Lord is God; besides Him there is no other” and take heart that He is “in heaven above and on the earth below” (Deuteronomy 4:35, 39). Those who confess Jesus as Lord know, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). In Jesus, we are given a high flashpoint; we will not be thrown into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:15). By the way, the spray worked; the screw was removed and the fan installed. You’ve been sprayed by the devotional; while you wait, read the label (the Bible). -Keep the SON in your eyes Tom
