SEASON PREVIEW
2016 FLORIDA STATE FOOTBALL
Led by one of the NATION’S MOST ELECTRIFYING PLAYMAKERS, the Florida State football team enters the 2016 season with aspirations of
RETURNING TO SUPREMACY in both the Atlantic Coast Conference and the nation.
The Seminoles RETURN 17 STARTERS from a team that went 10-3 and finished the season in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, and they received further
reinforcements in February when they welcomed in a RECRUITING CLASS that several analysts RATED AS THE BEST IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL.
Needless to say, COACH JIMBO FISHER IS OPTIMISTIC as he begins his seventh season at the helm in Tallahassee.
“I like this team,” Fisher said. “I see a lot of hungry players. I really do.”
That starts with Dalvin Cook, the junior running back who last season cruised to a SCHOOL RECORD 1,691 RUSHING YARDS and begins this year
on the shortlist of HEISMAN TROPHY CONTENDERS.
It continues with a DEEP STABLE of quarterbacks pushing each other in practice
with hopes of being under center when the Seminoles open the season against
Mississippi on Labor Day.
In Sean Maguire, FSU has a FIFTH-YEAR SENIOR who has played and WON on
some of the BIGGEST STAGES in the sport. And in freshmen Deondre Francois
and Malik Henry, the Seminoles have a pair of signal-callers looking to show that
the FUTURE IS NOW. Finally, in sophomore J.J. Cosentino, FSU has a mix of both
EXPERIENCE AND POTENTIAL.
I LIKE THIS TEAM. I
SEE A LOT OF HUNGRY
PLAYERS.
-FSU COACH JIMBO FISHER
It all adds up to what should make for a compelling race throughout fall camp.
“You have to look at who gives you the best chance to be SUCCESSFUL IN THE GAME,” Fisher said. “And the bottom line, that’s what it gets down to. All
decisions are based on the SUCCESS OF THE TEAM.”
Whichever quarterback emerges will find an offensive huddle LOADED with EXPLOSIVE running backs, VERSATILE receivers and a DEEP,
EXPERIENCED offensive line.
2016 FLORIDA STATE FOOTBALL G PAGE 24
DEMARCUS
WALKER
In addition to Cook, FSU’S BACKFIELD will benefit from the CONTINUED DEVELOPMENT of sophomore Jacques Patrick, who, at 6-2, 233
pounds, is a PERFECT physical complement for Cook.
The Florida State RECEIVING CORPS returns its TOP THREE TARGETS from a year ago, a group that includes RISING STAR Travis Rudolph as
well as the SPEEDY DUO of Kermit Whitfield and Jesus Wilson. And tight end Ryan Izzo could be on the verge of a BREAKOUT SEASON after a
promising 2015 campaign.
Up front, junior ALL-AMERICA CANDIDATE Roderick Johnson leads FSU’s offensive line, but the Seminoles RETURN EVERY STARTER from last
year’s group and an oversized class of freshmen will give FSU 19 SCHOLARSHIP LINEMEN this fall.
Despite the departure of star cornerback Jalen Ramsey to the NFL, FSU defensive coordinator Charles Kelly still has plenty of TALENT and LEADERSHIP at
his disposal.
That includes SENIOR All-America candidate DeMarcus Walker, the defensive end who recorded 10.5 SACKS in 2015, as well as veteran linebacker
Ro’Derrick Hoskins and senior defensive backs Nate Andrews and Marquez White.
Finally, the Seminoles may have found their NEXT GREAT DEFENSIVE BACK in the form of sophomore safety Derwin James, a freshman All-American
whose PHYSICAL GIFTS allow him to line up from nearly anywhere on the field.
SPECIAL TEAMS will have a NEW LOOK this year, as freshmen Ricky Aguayo and Logan Tyler look to FILL THE SHOES of the departed Roberto
Aguayo and Cason Beatty. Aguayo, Roberto’s younger brother, got off to a STRONG START by enrolling at FSU in January and participating in spring
practice. But he’ll be pushed by Tyler, a TOP KICKING PROSPECT who can also handle punting duties.
As usual, the Seminoles will traverse one of the most CHALLENGING SCHEDULES in the country. After starting the season with Ole Miss of the
Southeastern Conference, FSU will return home to face Charleston Southern before heading back on the road for back-to-back games at Louisville and
South Florida.
A LOADED OCTOBER slate features a RARE HOME GAME against defending ACC Coastal champion North Carolina, a visit to Miami and new coach
Mark Richt, and a date with national runner-up Clemson in what should be one of the MARQUEE GAMES of the COLLEGE FOOTBALL SEASON.
In addition to a trip to NC State, FSU in November will also HOST A FRIDAY NIGHT GAME against Boston College before heading north to
Syracuse and then finishing the regular season at home with the TRADITIONAL MATCHUP against RIVAL Florida.

FSU OFFENSE
2016 SEASON PREVIEW
QUARTERBACKS
n With a seasoned veteran and a trio of promising young players
in the mix, Florida State is rich with options at quarterback for the
2016 season. That begins with Sean Maguire, a fifth-year senior
who owns a 5-2 career record as a starter. After starting the 2015
campaign as a reserve, Maguire kick-started the FSU offense
midway through the year and finished with 1,520 passing yards
(190.0 per game), 11 touchdowns and six interceptions. The
Sparta, N.J., native could be the first fifth-year senior quarterback
to start for the Seminoles since eventual first-round draft pick E.J.
Manuel in 2012.
n Maguire, however, suffered an injury during the Chick-fil-A
Peach Bowl, which forced him to miss spring practice and opened
the door for redshirt freshman Deondre Francois to get extra
work in his absence. Sharing reps with redshirt sophomore
J.J. Cosentino, Francois got plenty of action with the first-team
offense, and he capped off his spring with an impressive showing
(20-33, 246 yards, two touchdowns) at the Garnet and Gold
Game in his hometown of Orlando.
n Malik Henry, an early-enrollee freshman from Inglewood,
Calif., offered a brief glimpse of the future with his own breakout
performance at the spring game (15-22, 205 yards, two
touchdowns).
RUNNING BACKS
n In junior Dalvin Cook, the Seminoles boast one of the most
electrifying players in the country, a potential superstar who
enters the season on the short list of Heisman Trophy candidates.
As a sophomore Cook shattered FSU’s single-season records for
rushing yards (1,691) and all-purpose yards (1,935), on his way
to multiple All-ACC and All-America accolades, as well as the Jim
Brown Award, which is presented to college football’s top running
back by the Touchdown Club of Columbus. The Miami native
enters his third season in Tallahassee needing just 1,260 yards
to become FSU’s all-time career rushing leader. If he reaches the
mark, Cook will have passed FSU legend Warrick Dunn (3,959
yards from 1993-96) in just three seasons.
n At 6-foot-2, 233 pounds, sophomore Jacques Patrick has the
size to provide the thunder to Cook’s lightning. Patrick got off to
a promising start, scoring five touchdowns while averaging 5.0
yards per carry (63-314) as a freshman. He’ll look to increase
his production in 2016 and bring a little more balance to FSU’s
rushing attack. Senior Ryan Green, back at running back after a
year on defense, can also help in that regard.
n When injuries struck FSU’s backfield in 2015, it was
Tallahassee native Johnathan Vickers who stepped up to carry
the load. Vickers’ nine-yard touchdown helped seal Seminoles’
victory at Wake Forest, and, now a junior, his versatility and
toughness will give him an opportunity to contribute even more.
n Steady senior Freddie Stevenson will once again anchor the
Seminoles at the fullback position. A native of Bartow, Fla., the
6-1, 243-pounder started 10 games in 2015 and often cleared
a path for Cook’s dynamic runs. Stevenson also showed some
proficiency as a receiver, where he caught nine passes for 64
yards a year ago.
RECEIVERS
n The receiving corps is one of the deepest and most
experienced segments on Florida State’s roster. That’s thanks
in large part to seniors Kermit Whitfield and Jesus Wilson and
junior Travis Rudolph, who combined to make up more than 70
percent of FSU’s receiving production in 2015.
n Rudolph in particular appears on the verge of stardom,
as he finished with a team-high seven receiving TDs while
flirting with a 1,000-yard season as a sophomore. Even better,
Rudolph steadily improved as the season went on and had his
best performances toward the end of the year. That includes a
dominant, 191-yard, three-touchdown effort against Syracuse as
well as a 201-yard outburst in the season finale against Houston.
n Wilson and Whitfield have been mainstays in the offense since
2013 and each brings an element of speed and elusiveness to
the Seminoles’ attack. Whitfield enjoyed a big junior season (57
catches, 798 yards, six TDs) and, as one of the fastest players in
the country, can be used in a variety of ways.
n A pair of juniors, Ermon Lane and Ja’Vonn Harrison, enter
the season looking to capitalize on the potential they’ve flashed
over the last two years. Lane, who has emerged as an imposing
blocker, has reeled in 19 catches for 317 yards in his career. And
Harrison was off to a strong start in spring camp before being
sidelined by turf toe.
n The Seminoles have a number of promising youngsters
waiting in the wings. Tops on that list is Auden Tate, a 6-5,
218-pound sophomore who dazzled with six catches for 100
yards and two TDs in the Garnet and Gold Game. He’s joined
by fellow classmates George Campbell, Nyqwan Murray and
Da’Vante Phillips.
n The receiver group will get a boost this fall when freshman
Keith Gavin arrives on campus. An Under Armour All-American
from nearby Crawfordville, Fla., Gavin scored touchdowns on
more than 30 percent (16 of 52) of his receptions as a senior at
Wakulla High.
TIGHT ENDS
n In his first season as a regular contributor, Ryan Izzo became
FSU’s fifth-leading receiver (behind Rudolph, Wilson, Whitfield
and Cook) and his 15.0 yards per reception were second-most
among players with at least 10 catches. At 6-5, 243 pounds, Izzo
is one of the FSU offense’s most physically imposing threats and
is in the hunt for All-ACC honors.
n Joining Izzo are the versatile Jeremy Kerr and former prep
basketball standout Mavin Saunders. Kerr provided one of
the most memorable plays of 2015 when he caught a 1-yard
touchdown pass from Maguire in the Seminoles’ win at Florida.
Saunders’ size and athleticism give him the potential to draw
favorable matchups from opposing defenses.
n There’s an old face in a new place this season, as fifth-year
senior Chris Casher has moved from defensive end to tight end.
Fisher praised Casher’s hands and route-running throughout the
spring.
OFFENSIVE LINE
n After taking a season to gain experience and chemistry,
Florida State’s offensive line has the potential to be one of the
best in the ACC, if not the nation, in 2016. The Seminoles return
every starter up front, as well as a number of key reserves with
significant game experience.
n FSU’s success on the line starts with junior left tackle
Roderick Johnson, the reigning ACC Jacobs Blocking Trophy
winner as well as a former freshman All-American. The Florissant,
Mo., native has started 18 consecutive games and is a strong
candidate for both All-America designations and postseason
awards this year.
n Johnson will be surrounded by plenty of familiar faces. Fifthyear senior Kareem Are returns at left guard, as do center Alec
Eberle, right guard Wilson Bell and right tackles Derrick Kelly
and Brock Ruble, who each started games last season.
n While FSU has the luxury of returning starters, there will
still be some position battles in fall camp. Rick Leonard, a
former defensive end who switched to right tackle, made some
impressive progress at his new position in the spring. The
Seminoles can also expect Corey Martinez (three starts at center
in 2015), Ryan Hoefeld (eight career starts at center), Cole
Minshew and David Robbins to have a say in how the front five
shakes out as well.
n Offensive line coach Rick Trickett is also set to welcome
in a deep and impressive class of freshmen that will give
the Seminoles as much depth up front as they have had in
years. With FSU’s six newcomers – Andrew Boselli, Landon
Dickerson, Jauan Williams, Baveon Johnson, Mike Arnold
and Josh Ball – included, the Seminoles will have 19 scholarship
linemen on the roster this fall.

2016 SEASON PREVIEW
INTERIOR DEFENSIVE LINE
n With two years of learning from more experienced players
under his belt, it’s Derrick Nnadi’s turn to anchor the FSU
defensive line. Nnadi led FSU’s interior linemen with 45 tackles a
year ago, and he contributed two sacks as well. He’ll be joined by
Demarcus Christmas, another junior stepping into a larger role
after the departure of some key veterans. Together, they’ll look to
continue FSU’s recent tradition of dominant play in the trenches.
n The Seminoles are also blessed with plenty of depth for when
Nnadi and Christmas need a breather. Beyond those two, FSU
has five defensive tackles with at least two years in the program,
including fifth-year senior Justin Shanks and redshirt junior
Keith Bryant. Also in the mix are redshirt sophomores Fredrick
Jones and Arthur Williams. And FSU got extra reinforcements
in January, when junior college standout Walvenski Aime’ and
local freshman Cedric Wood joined the fold.
DEFENSIVE ENDS
n FSU’s defense has received top-rate leadership throughout
the Jimbo Fisher era, from Lamarcus Joyner to Telvin Smith to
Jalen Ramsey. This year, that torch passes to DeMarcus Walker,
the senior defensive end who passed on professional football for
one more year in Tallahassee. An All-America candidate, Walker
became FSU’s first player with double-digit sacks (10.5) since
eventual first-round draft pick Bjoern Werner in 2012. Along the
way, he posted career highs in tackles, tackles for loss, pass
breakups and forced fumbles while helping to pace an FSU
defense that allowed the ninth-fewest points per game in the
country.
n The Seminoles appear to have a rising star in sophomore
Josh Sweat, a former top recruit who worked his way back from
a serious knee injury to start nine games a year ago. In addition
to 41 tackles, Sweat posted 5.0 TFLs, two sacks, an interception
and three fumble recoveries. Redshirt junior Keith Bryant and
redshirt sophomore Adam Torres will also provide experienced
depth in the rotation this fall.
n The defensive ends will get some reinforcements this fall from
early-enrollee Janarius Robinson and incoming freshman Brian
Burns, each of whom participated in the U.S. Army All-American
Game.
LINEBACKERS
n Ro’Derrick Hoskins, who emerged as one of the team’s most
pleasant surprises in 2015, is back to lead the linebackers as a
redshirt junior. The Orlando native appeared in 12 games last
year (six starts), and his 52 tackles and 6.5 TFLs are most among
FSU’s returning linebackers.
n Redshirt junior Matthew Thomas is back in the mix after
recovering from shoulder surgery, and reviews from spring camp
suggest that the former five-star recruit hasn’t missed a beat.
Given the departures of seniors Terrance Smith and Reggie
Northrup, Thomas will likely have an opportunity to make a quick
impact. Sophomores Delvin Purifoy and Sh’mar Kilby-Lane
also will look to contribute at all linebacker spots.
nJunior Jacob Pugh is listed as a linebacker, but he can also
be used as an edge rusher. The Tallahassee native finished with
32 tackles and three sacks a year ago.
n Josh Brown, an early-enrollee freshman from Charlotte,
N.C., drew rave reviews from teammates and coaches for his
performance during spring camp. A U.S. Army All-American,
Brown racked up 130 tackles and 14 sacks while leading his high
school to a third straight state championship.
DEFENSIVE BACKS
n For the fifth-straight season, the Seminoles must replace
a defensive back drafted into the NFL. And this time, it’s
Jalen Ramsey, the All-American who went fifth overall to the
Jacksonville Jaguars in April’s NFL draft.
n FSU, though, seems up to the task with a stable of DBs that
may be as deep and talented as any in the nation. That starts
with sophomore safety Derwin James, a freshman All-American
who football analysts at Pro Football Focus suggested could
already be the best defensive player in the nation. James is
FSU’s top returning tackler (91 stops) and his 9.5 tackles for loss
are second only to Walker. The Haines City, Fla., native can play
any position in the secondary, and he has the versatility to move
into the box as a hybrid linebacker as well.
n James’ counterpart at safety, senior Nate Andrews, is one
of team’s most experienced defenders. Since carving out a role
for himself as a freshman on FSU’s 2013 national championship
team, Andrews has appeared in 41 games in career. Sophomores
Calvin Brewton and A.J. Westbrook are also in the safety
rotation.
nJunior Trey Marshall is set to return after an injury cut short
a promising start to the 2015 season. Marshall, who hails from
nearby Lake City, has played both safety and “star” throughout
his career, and his versatility allows him to move around the field
as situations dictate.
n The Seminoles boast an embarrassment of riches at the
cornerback position. Leading the way is senior Marquez White,
who stepped up in a big way in his first year as a starter in 2015.
Despite lining up across from Ramsey, White allowed completions
on just 32.1 percent of the passes thrown his way, and opposing
quarterbacks targeted him just seven percent of the time.
n After White, there are a number of talented, young
cornerbacks vying to fill Ramsey’s old spot. That includes
former high school All-American Tarvarus McFadden, as
well as Washington, D.C., native Marcus Lewis, who had an
impressive and confident outing at the Garnet and Gold Game.
Junior Malique Jackson will provide depth and experience at the
position as well.
nFinally, Levonta Taylor, a consensus five-star prospect
and the No. 1 high school cornerback in the nation, headlines
a freshman DB class that may be the nation’s best. Taylor, a
native of Virginia Beach, Va., forced 10 turnovers as a senior.
He’ll be joined by Under Armour All-American Carlos Becker of
Kissimmee, Fla., and Louisiana standout Kyle Meyers. All three
have a chance to compete for playing time in a secondary that
loves to use a deep rotation.

2016 SEASON PREVIEW
SPECIAL TEAMS
n For the fourth straight year, there will be an Aguayo kicking
at FSU. With his older brother, Roberto, now with the Tampa
Bay Buccaneers, freshman Ricky Aguayo is set to continue his
family’s legacy. Aguayo joined the Seminoles in January and
gave a fine preview of coming attractions by going 2 for 2 (from
45 and 46 yards) during the spring game. His 46-yarder tied the
game with just seconds remaining on the clock.
n With four-year starter Cason Beatty having graduated, FSU
will have a new punter for the first time since the 2012 season.
Incoming freshman Logan Tyler will likely get a crack at it,
having averaged 43 yards per punt as a high school senior. Tyler,
who played quarterback, running back, safety and linebacker at
Nixa High in Missouri, is also expected to compete for the kicking
job.
n Kermit Whitfield enjoyed a startling return to form as a kick
returner last year, with a 26.7 yards-per-return average that
ranked 17th in the country. He’ll likely be joined by longtime
partner Jesus Wilson, who also handled most of FSU’s punt
returns in 2015. But, as usual, special teams coordinator Jay
Graham has several speedy and talented options with which to
experiment.
n Long snapper Stephen Gabbard enters his junior season
having handled every punt, field goal and extra-point over the last
two years. Since Gabbard took over, FSU hasn’t missed a single
extra point (104 for 104), and his snaps helped Beatty to a career
year in 2015.
