RELEVANT EXPERIENCE
For the last two years I have worked as an Independent Expert Witness and Consultant
providing psychological assessments in the areas of learning disability, assessments of mental
capacity, Asperger’s Syndrome and other developmental disorders, for the criminal courts,
family courts, parole boards and local authorities.
I have responsibility for providing a Forensic Clinical Psychology service to the Oxford Medium
Security Unit for people with learning disabilities since it opened in 2000. This includes the
management of a sex offender treatment programme, a programme for arsonists and
individual therapy for clients who have committed serious offences, as well as providing risk
assessments for the Probation Service and others.
In this role I regularly prepare reports for, and give evidence to, Mental Health Review
Tribunals, particularly on issues concerning the classification of “mental disorder” under the
1983 Mental Health Act.
I have also in the last five years regularly given evidence in court as an Expert Witness
concerning autistic spectrum disorders, mental capacity, sex offender prevention orders,
antisocial behaviour orders and diagnosis of learning disability and developmental disorders in
victims and offenders.
I provide advice to other professional staff, multiagency panels and others on the management
of people with learning disabilities or autistic spectrum disorders who have committed criminal
offences throughout Oxfordshire, Wiltshire and Buckinghamshire.
I have long been involved in service development for people with autism and Asperger’s
Syndrome. This includes a variety of staff training workshops, supervision of complex cases as
well as direct clinical work which involves advice for carers and individual CBT. I have initiated
and run therapeutic and social groups for people with Asperger’s Syndrome in Oxford.
