I have responsibility for providing a Forensic Clinical Psychology service to the Oxford Medium Security Unit for people with learning disabilities since it opened in 2000. This includes the management of a sex offender treatment programme, a programme for arsonists and individual therapy for clients who have committed serious offences, as well as providing risk assessments for the Probation Service and others. In this role I regularly prepare reports for, and give evidence to, Mental Health Review Tribunals, particularly on issues concerning the classification of “mental disorder” under the 1983 Mental Health Act. I have also in the last five years regularly given evidence in court as an Expert Witness concerning autistic spectrum disorders, mental capacity, sex offender prevention orders, antisocial behaviour orders and diagnosis of learning disability and developmental disorders in victims and offenders. I provide advice to other professional staff, multiagency panels and others on the management of people with learning disabilities or autistic spectrum disorders who have committed criminal offences throughout Oxfordshire, Wiltshire and Buckinghamshire. I have long been involved in service development for people with autism and Asperger’s Syndrome. This includes a variety of staff training workshops, supervision of complex cases as well as direct clinical work which involves advice for carers and individual CBT. I have initiated and run therapeutic and social groups for people with Asperger’s Syndrome in Oxford. I also contract to local authorities for pre-proceedings work with parents whose children are under child protection plans. During this time I have assessed over 200 clients for the courts. I specialised in adults with developmental disorders, Aspergers Syndrome and cognitive assessments concerning capacity issues under the Mental Capacity Act. June 1998 – December 2007: Head of Psychology Services, Managing a staff of 25 Psychologists; clinically responsible for forensic psychological services to a medium secure unit for people with learning disabilities. I managed the sex offender treatment programme for nine years and worked individually with a variety of offenders including arsonists and violent offenders. Principally involved in closing one of the last learning disability hospitals in Bristol and preparing residents for moves into community care.
