calledSundaythe“eighthday,”sinceitwasthedayaftertheSabbathand

regardedtheeightdaysafterEasterSundayasonegreatday,anoctave,
onegloriousfeastwhenpeoplewereforbiddentofastorkneel.Inthe
seventhcentury,PentecostacquiredanOctave,too.Christmasdidn’t
claimthehonorofacontinuousfeast,butitdidgetanOctaveDay.January1istheoldestMarianfeast,theOctaveofChristmas.Itwasoriginally
