St. Paul's Family Resources, Inc. Spring Update and 2009 Annual Report St. Paul’s Family Resources, Inc. (SPFR), in affiliation with the Council for Health and Human Services Ministries of the United Church of Christ, seeks to be a faith-based ministry, providing comprehensive and affordable services and care of the highest quality to a diverse population. With an 80-year old tradition of providing care and housing for seniors in St. Paul and the East Metro area, SPFR currently offers senior independent, assisted living and memory care through Oak Meadows. Support for our mission is maintained through the benevolence, fund raising and development activities managed through St. Paul’s Family Resources Foundation. Our Mission St. Paul's Family Resources exists to provide a comprehensive program of care to meet the needs of those seeking our services in the greater St. Paul and east metropolitan area. We strive to embody God's love for all and are dedicated to the well being of our clients, their families and our staff. Letter from our President Welcome to our Spring Newsletter and Annual Report for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2009. We are pleased to have the opportunity to provide you with an overview of the activities taking place at Oak Meadows and within St. Paul’s Family Resources Foundation. 2009 was an important year in our history of serving seniors. The Woods Memory Care unit opened in March. This facility significantly expanded the range of services available at Oak Meadows. We are happy to report that the Woods is currently 100% occupied. Our Foundation’s Heritage Grant program continues to provide Minnesota UCC churches with financial support used to begin or enhance programs designed to serve seniors (or their families/caregivers) in their communities. Since the inception of the Heritage Grant program in 2007, 20 grants totaling over $100,000 have been provided. The program has been extremely well received within the Minnesota UCC Church community. The feedback we’ve received strongly indicates that the grants have been effective in aiding local churches to offer senior programs. We look forward to 2010 and the opportunities that are before us. At Oak Meadows we plan to build a gazebo and memory care garden, and to further support the current Tenant Assistance Program. Our Foundation also hopes to continue funding the Heritage Grant program. We very much appreciate the financial support from our donors. This support is critically important as we seek to fulfill our mission. We invite you to review the giving opportunities outlined in this report, and to respond generously by designating your gifts to support the program(s) of your choice. Thanks again for your support, and please let me know if you have any questions. Eric M. Kehle President St. Paul’s Family Resources, Inc. St. Paul’s Family Resources Foundation Saint Paul’s Family Resources Foundation works to grow and manage our endowment and provide additional support for Oak Meadows. In 2007, the Foundation started a new program – the Heritage Grants – to continue the work of the Church Home after it closed. The Heritage Grants provide help to UCC churches in Minnesota to begin new programs or enhance existing ones that improve the lives of seniors in their communities or support the families and others who care for them. By partnering with our member churches we are able to expand our mission and improve the lives of more seniors and assist more of their families in caring for their loved ones. Having helped a total of 12 churches in 2008 and 2009, the Foundation renewed the Heritage Grants for 2010. At the end of 2009, the Foundation chose 8 churches to be the recipients of the 2010 Heritage Grants: • First Congregational Church UCC of Anoka for a parish nurse program • First United Church of Christ of Fergus Falls for a guide to daily prayer for seniors • Minnehaha United Church of Christ for connecting members with elderly and GLBT members • First United Church of Christ of Northfield for assisting caregivers of seniors • Robbinsdale United Church of Christ for a parish nurse program • St. Louis Park Union Congregational UCC for a parish nurse program • St. Paul's United Church of Christ of St. Paul for a parish nurse program • First Congregational UCC of Wadena and Faith UCC of Bertha for connecting the elderly in two rural churches Part of our grant process includes receiving reports from our grantees at the end of the grant cycle. Over and over again, our grant recipients tell us what a positive impact the grants have had on enriching the lives of their seniors and how the programs keep seniors connected to their churches. It’s incredibly rewarding to see the mission of St. Paul’s Family Resources reach the members of our sister churches. In addition, the grants are helping churches reach out to friends and neighbors, having a positive impact on the communities. As the economy recovers, the Foundation Board looks forward to healthier days for the endowment and new ways it can support the goals of St. Paul's Family Resources. The Foundation Board members are delighted that the Heritage Grants program is spreading the word about St. Paul's Family Resources and helping to support innovative programs for seniors throughout the Minnesota UCC Conference. We thank all our sponsors for their generous support of the endowment. A Banner Year for The Woods Memory Care It’s been a year since the ribbon was cut to open The Woods Memory Care last March, and what a year it’s been! The incredible response we’ve had reinforces the research that led to our decision to create a memory care facility at Oak Meadows. “We’re grateful that we can now provide the continuity of care our tenants need as they progress through their housing needs,” says Connie Dow, Executive Director of Oak Meadows. “Thanks to The Woods, our tenants can remain here at Oak Meadows through their transition. Being able to stay in familiar surroundings is so important to our residents for so many reasons.” Financially, The Woods is meeting our expectations as well. According to Connie, “we budgeted for 90% occupancy by June, 2009, and we met that goal”. The Woods is currently at 100% occupancy and is maintaining a waiting list of prospective tenants. Fundraising is Underway for a Safe and Secure Gazebo and Memory Care Garden Who doesn’t feel better breathing fresh air and feeling the warm sun on their faces? The next project on the docket is to build a garden and gazebo that is safe and secure so tenants of The Woods, and all residents of Oak Meadows, can spend time enjoying the outdoors. We are currently in the planning and fundraising phase of this exciting new project. Employees Join the Fight The Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk® is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research programs. Held annually in hundreds of communities across the country, this inspiring event calls volunteers of all ages to become Champions in the fight against Alzheimer’s. Oak Meadows employees participated in the Twentieth Annual Memory Walk held on September 26 at Hyland Lake Park Reserve in Bloomington. Thanks to our participants’ efforts and the great lead of the team captain, Deb Ruzek, Oak Meadows raised $2,414 of the $540,000 raised in total! A great effort that shows how much our staff cares! Tenant Assistance Seeks to Serve More Tenants Oak Meadows is currently seeking donations to its Tenant Assistance program in order to meet the needs of two tenants desperately in need of financial support. Thanks to generous donations in the past, we are currently providing one tenant with financial assistance, and have been able to help eight residents over the course of the past year continue to stay at Oak Meadows after their own resources have been exhausted. Chaplaincy Last year, we installed Pastor Carol as our new Chaplain, and she has done a great job in revitalizing the program. She has been warmly welcomed into the Oak Meadows community and we are seeing an increase in participation in programs that are offered. Donations are needed to this important program to maintain its growth and vitality for our tenants. Try Stopping an Army of Fifth Graders Russ Anderson, tenant of Oak Meadows and member of Hazel Park UCC, has an army of fifth graders trying to do something Russ and his family have been working on for over 12 years—getting Russ a Purple Heart. Russ Anderson served in World War II and was wounded during the invasion of Normandy. He spent nine months in the hospital before being honorable discharged. During a visit to Weaver Elementary School in Maplewood on Veterans Day, Russ brought history to life for those fifth graders—regaling them with stories of his war time service—and of his disappointment of not receiving a Purple Heart for his battle injuries. The Oak Meadows Mission Our mission is to provide a dignified living environment which embodies God’s love for all, and is dedicated to the well being of our tenants, their families and our staff. Well, the students thought that was unfair, so they’ve been working on righting that wrong ever since. Research, paperwork and letters to their Congresspeople and local officials have created a new front for Russ’ quest for his Purple Heart. "I was really surprised," said Anderson about the recent efforts. "Thanks a lot, kids, for what you've done." They’re still waiting to hear from the Army on whether Russ will be awarded his medal, but whatever the result, we are all proud of the kids in Sara Paul’s fifth grade class and especially of Russ and his dedication to service for our country. We have a true hero here at Oak Meadows. Oak Meadows Receives Acorn Award Fred and Connie Receive Honorable Mention Oakdale Volunteer of the Year Twice a week for the past seven years, Connie Dow and Fred Stalley, a tenant and retired teacher, have visited Oakdale Elementary to tutor first grade students in reading. In return, students come to Oak Meadows in May of each year to read to our tenants—demonstrating their new-found skills. To acknowledge their dedication, Fred and Connie received an Honorable Mention for the 2009 Oakdale Volunteer of the Year Award. Oak Meadows and Oakdale Elementary have maintained a strong relationship between the tenants and children at the school and often participate in joint activities enjoyed by all! Congratulations and thanks for your dedication and service Fred and Connie! In 2009, Oak Meadows received the multi-family Acorn Award from the Economic Development Commission and City of Oakdale. The program recognizes property owners who display an enhanced commitment to well maintained, aesthetically pleasing property in Oakdale. The recent addition and dedication of the Schiltgen pathway improvements landed us the award, but they also commented that the continued and exceptional landscaping provides a beautiful and peaceful venue for the community and residents of Oak Meadows. “We have always been so connected to our community here in Oakdale, and given our tenants love to garden, we’re thrilled to get the Acorn!”, said Connie Dow, Executive Director of Oak Meadows.
