Transcript - [S.: Sarah (South African); M.: Marta (Italian); D.: Dean (English); H.: Hamish (Scottish)]
S. I hated school. I couldn't wait to leave.
M. Oh no. I didn't mind school, in fact I enjoyed being with my mates and hanging up before and after classes.
D. What have you remembered of what you studied?
M. I've remembered lots - we studied all the usual: History, Geography, Literature and difficult things like Latin and
Maths, but then there were subjects like Philosophy and History of Art that I enjoyed.
H. I went to an all-boy school in Edinburgh and we did lots of sports. I especially liked rugby and golf and I think I've
learned my love of the outdoors from those experiences.
M. We didn't do much sport at school, just a bit of volleyball but then most schools in Italy only have school in the
morning.
D. Wow, lucky you! We have school all day from 9 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon and then often clubs after
school.
M. Clubs? What kind of clubs?
D. Music, Drama, Choir, Orchestra, Football, Netball - loads of clubs. I must say I enjoyed the clubs often more than
the classes!
M. I bet you did Drama.
D. Of course. I have appeared in Shakespeare and Moliere and Pinter as well as musicals like Cabaret.
H. Did you ever study?
D. Sometimes. Enough to get me through my A Levels. Did you do A levels?
H. No, in Scotland we have Lowers at 16 and Highers at 18, more like the new AS Levels in England. And you Sarah?
S. Our school system in South Africa is very similar; we have 13 grades. 1 to 6 in Primary and 7 to 13 in High School.
What about Italy?
M. We start school when we are 6 and finish at 19, and you?
D. We start at 5 and finish at 18 - which must mean we're brighter. Hey, Marta stop hitting me!

PB Ex 17 p. 61: Le ragazze superano i ragazzi nello studio? (education = istruzione)

Speaker 1 : My favourite teacher was my Maths teacher. He was one of the goofiest (goofiest = being crazy or mildly
ludicrous) people I ever knew, but incredibly nice and you could really tell he cared about the subject and all of his
students. His class was always the best - I felt most comfortable in the environment he set up and it was fun every day. I
had hated Maths up until that point, but he taught me to love it! He was always so clear in his explanations!
Speaker 2: Believe it or not, my favourite teacher was named Mr. Yelle. He taught seventh and eighth grade maths,
science and music (sometimes moonlighting (to moonlight = to have a second job that you do secretly, usually without
paying tax on the extra money that you earn) as a jazz pianist.) He spoke to us "at eye level" (“ad altezza d’uomo” =
as equals, not talk from above, patronizing), and had infinite patience and tolerance for anything except unkindness. I
remember our lessons on meteorology (we built a weather station!) and on human anatomy. By the way, he didn't shout.
Speaker 3: My best teacher was my high school Social Studies and History Teacher, Thomas Ladenburg. He was
respectful of us as pupils, he knew how to listen, his class was never boring because it was discussion based and when
we got to class we always knew what to expect. He shared his own learning experiences with us as well.
Speaker 4: The best teacher I ever had was my high school English teacher in the US because he knew exactly how to
appreciate and yes, utilize, our natural initiative and enthusiasm. With his blessing, we turned vocabulary learning into a
weekly exchange of witticisms and laughter as we wrote our stories about each other, inventing all kinds of tall tales (=
racconto assurdo).
Speaker 5: She was of medium height with a very friendly face, conservatively dressed and a Presbyterian from
Scotland, my favourite teacher taught history. She taught History because she loved it and she made us love it. She
encouraged us to read historical novels which I like to this day. I didn't really like school, she made it bearable. When
she left to head a school in Australia, I really missed her. Speaker 6: Gail Anderson was my grade 9 English teacher.
She was one of those hippy types but she treated us with respect and cared about each one of us. She took the time to
really teach us literature and how to write. I will always remember how she would write meaningful comments and
suggestions for writing, organizing and presenting better work. She made a difference in our lives. She shaped our
destiny and gave us confidence.
