Originally, 1394 (1394a-1995) was limited to max 4.5m STP
cable
Later standards (1394b-2002) enable longer lengths using
different media:


 
Multimode glass fiber, S400-S1600, 100m
HPCF and POF fiber, S100-S200, 50m
UTP cable, S100, 100m
Thick STP cables (lower loss), S800, 10m
Recently, further enhancements have been standardized
(1394-2008 and later):

Single mode glass fiber, S800 – S3200, 2000m
UTP, S200-S400, 75m
Coax cable 50Ω and 75Ω, S800, ~60m
1394 over copper media
 
 
Copper has the advantage of being robust, cost efficient, widely
available, and allows power to be transmitted together with
data signals
2 solutions for 1394 over long haul copper (>10m)
  1394 over UTP, specified in IEEE 1394-2008
•  S200 over 100m cat6
•  S400 over 75m cat6
 
1394 over Coax: specified in TS2007005
•  Many types of coax cables => Attenuation budget (12dB)
•  S800 over 20m (thin coax) to 100m (thick low loss coax)
 
Both standards use equalization to get long distances

Equalization technology overcomes degradation of digital signals due to
attenuation over an electrical conductor. The compensation applies to conductor
length limitations, data rate restrictions or both
EqcoLogic equalization circuits are fully adaptive, dynamically changing
performance parameters for different cable types and lengths, as well as
temperature conditions
