Welcome to Y5! As each new topic begins you will receive a newsletter that will provide you with an outline of the topic together with relevant information.
Communication between school ad home is very important and we hope that this is one way that we can provide you with up to ate information about the experiences
your child is having in school. You may be aware that the National Curriculum has undergone some changes recently and in response we have adapted our curriculum so
that it meets the new requirements.
Supporting at Home
We value the support you provide to your child particularly in promoting a
positive attitude towards learning. We will be encouraging the children to listen
carefully and always do their best. You will be updated about your child’s
progress and efforts at parents evening and be informed of any concerns we
may have n between these times. In supporting your child’s academic progress,
we request that you support them in completing their homework and you sign
their reading journal. Reading every day is extremely valuable in ensuring that
your child is constantly practising and reinforcing their key skills in phonics as
well as gaining in fluency and confidence. Children who read regularly at home
make the most progress.

Reading
Children should have their reading books in school every day. Your child will
take part in guided reading every week. Children are grouped according to
ability and will be assessed on objectives related to comprehension, fluency,
awareness and use of punctuation. Your child will be taught new reading skills
and given opportunities to apply them to their reading.
PE
We will have two PE lessons a week and these are identified below. As always,
please ensure that all kit is clearly labelled with a name and in school every day.
Please also put a spare pair of socks in the PE bag in case of wet weather. PE kits
will be sent home each half term to be washed and check they still fit.

Indoor PE – Friday Afternoon
Outdoor PE – Tuesday Afternoon
Dance
Every other Friday the children will be walking to Stockport Academy for a dance
session. This will form a part of their dance teaching and we will continue to
build on these skills during the alternate weeks back in school.
Coming into School
It is important that the school day starts promptly at 8:55am. As a reminder, the
doors open at 8:45am and we encourage KS2 children to come directly into
school for ‘response time’ where the children respond to any marking in their
books. If the children arrive after 8:55am please enter via Reception / Office and
sign you child in at the office.
Playtime Snacks
As you are aware, we achieved our Healthy Schools award and as such we are
continuing with a healthy food focus. Please encourage your child to bring a
piece of fruit in from home as a healthy snack and a bottle of water every day.
