• Florida's total merchandise trade (exports plus imports) ended 2015 at $147.4 billion, a ‐4.0% decrease from 2014. • Slowing economies of some of the state's largest markets contributed to a ‐10.4% decline in exports to $73.3 billion. • The biggest hits were exports to Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela while exports to Mexico gained nearly 30%. • Imports grew by 3.3% ‐ to $74.1 billion ‐ while imports from Germany alone surged by 164% over 2014.

U.S. and Florida‐Origin Exports ‐ 2015
• Florida regained its position as the sixth‐largest export state in 2015, surpassing the state of Michigan by a narrow margin. • Florida ended the year with $53.8 billion in exports that originated from the state, down ‐8.0% from the previous year. • Canada became Florida's number one destination for origin‐exports in 2015, surpassing Brazil which saw a ‐27.4% decline. • NAFTA‐partner Mexico moved up from sixth‐place to become the state's third‐largest export market for Florida‐origin exports.

Merchandise trade consists of those goods that are shipped to (imports), from (exports) and through Florida (originating in other states or countries) regardless of where they were produced, as well as those goods that are produced, grown, or mined in Florida and are shipped from the state to an overseas destination.

Origin of Movement data provides export statistics based on the “state from which the merchandise starts its journey to the port of export; that is, the data reflect the transportation origin of exports.” While the Census Bureau points out that this does not represent the “production origin,” it is generally accepted that this is the closest approximation of individual U.S. states’ exports available. Therefore, Florida‐origin exports are deemed to be Florida goods that are exported to other countries, regardless of how they were shipped to their destinations.
