The HoLLy 8pLYLt Vol. XLV, No.5 Rancocas Valley Regional High School Mount Holly, New Jersey 08060 Senior Issue Students enjoy Easter in Rome by Shannon Shields Mr. Danser, Jim Curto, Debbie DeClemente, Kirk waner, Debbie Richardson, Alicia Javis and Mr. Danser's niece, Robin posed for this picture with the Bay of Naples for a backdrop. Classes elect new leaders by Shannon Shields Elections have recently been held for positions in the 1990-91 student government which is very important to the success of our school. It is the students' only means of representation in the way we want events is our school to be handled. Student government lets the stu dent body make decisions so we are not solely controlled by "a higher au thority." Student officials are involved with fund raisers, dress code, social events, homecoming, assemblies and other activities. The results forthe 1990-91 student government elections are Student Council President, Dong Shin; Student Council Vice President, Alex Craig; Student Council Secretary, John Kosydar; Student Council Treasurer, Pete Braun; Student Council Public Relations, Michelle Eble; Student Council Representative, Kim Wagner; For the class of 1991 the leaders will be Class President, HeatherCorco ran; Vice President, Tracy Sortino; Secretary, Marisa Mazairz; Treasurer, Todd Smith; Representative and Deanna Sahina. In the 1992 election the results were as follows: Class President, Clare McNab; Vice President,***; Secretary, Alyson Mongan and Treasurer, Jenefer Willem. Finally in the 1993 election the following students will be the leaders: Class President, Vashti Nevadomski; Vice President, Dawn Caputo; Secre tary, Sally Nolder; Treasurer, Dannielle George; Representative, Shannon Bangs; Representative, Debbie Richardson; Representative, Melody Smythe; Representative, Dianne Ty son. Some Latin students ventured to Rome this spring. They were freshmen (Latin I) Kirk Walter and (Latin III) Debbie Richardson, sophomore (Latin II) Jim Curto, and two juniors (Latin I) Alicia Jarvis, and (Latin III) Debbie DeClemente. Also going on the trip were Mrs. DeClemente, Debbie's mother, and Robin Danser, Mr. Danser's niece. Robin is a soph at Medford Voc Tech. The trip was sponsored by Mr. Don Danser, teacher of Latin and Journal ism. The students went during Easter break to Rome, Florence, and Naples. Some of the highlights include (besides the normal Colosseum,) Michealangelo's Pieta, David and the Cistine Chapel paintings. The Pompeii ruins seemed to be the favorite site to visit according to Mr. Danser. The weather was rainy most of the time but it did not dampen their spirits. Everyone had a good time. These trips are open to everyone not just language stUdents. Everyone is invited to experience the excitement of other countries. Mrs. Donna Rivers led a trip to Paris with over 14 people going from both RV and the community. Students have an opportunity to raise money for travel by joining the Travel Club and pariticipating in its fund-raising activties, the most popular of which is the morning donut sales in the cafeteria Trips to Paris (led by Mr. Holland) and Germany (led by Mr. Danser) are planned for next year. Page 2 June 1990 Holly Spirit Cocaine epidemic continues to grow by Matt Shaw A startling shock was brought on this month by the report issued by the Senate Judiciary Committee. The re port stated that about 1 in every 100 Americans are addicted to cocaine. The committee also stated that about 2.2 million people are hard-core addicts, people who use cocaine fre quently, and that number has more than doubled since the last poll. Officials from the ONDCP (Office at National Drug Control Policy) said they were going to base their drug strategy by the report done by the Na- tional Institute on Drug Abuse. The report showed that 4 million Ameri cans had serious drug problems. According to the estimates in the Senate report, New York has the high est total of 434,000 while South Da kota has the lowest with just 800. But whether it is 1 or 100,000 the problem is an epidemic and the prob lem is growing. When asked about the problem one student simply stated, "I don't understand what people see in it. I mean it's so expensive and causes Sponsored by the Honor Society Students give blood by Angela Byrnes Recently a blood drive sponsored by the National Honor Society and the American Red Cross was held in the wrestling room from 8:00-1 :00. The blood drive, held every De cember and May, was a great suc cess. The study/faculty participation was excellent, as it always has been. The group has never failed to meet their pint goal. "A goal of 50 pints was well ex ceeded," commented Mrs. Trudy Menne. The reason for the NatiDnal Honor Society's sponsoring of the blood drive is that they wanted to support an organization that would benefit not only our school, but also the commu nity at large. The American Red Cross supplies about 1/2 of all the blood used in the United States. Fifteen percent of that blood is collected on college or high school campuses. But they could always use more. Patients in our area (Pennsylvania and New Jersey) needed over 385,000 pints in 1989 alone. Those suffering from cancer or leukemia need the blood donated from you on a weekly basis. To give blood, you must be be tween 17 and 65 and at least 110 pounds. Nearly 50% of our population is capable of giving a pint of blood every 56 days, yet only 8% do. Many WOUld-be donors don't give blood for a number of reasons. The main one must be the fear of AIDS. The fact is all equipment used to col- people to act like a spaz. Besides, the people I've ever seen use it always have a stuffed up nose." The problem is everywhere and is no joke. New Jersey has 66,000 hard core drug addicts and the problem is growing at an amazing rate. The question everyone must ask him or herself is "What can I do to help stop this epidemic of addiction." r Letters to the editor are welcomed. The Holly Spirltre serves the right to edit submit ted letters to conform with poli cies concerning slander, libel, and offensive language. Names of the writers must accompany letters In order to be considered for publication. Names may be Withheld upon request. Letters should be typed, but clear, handwritten letters will be accepted. You may give your letter to any staff member, to Mr. Danser (Room B226), or place It in Mr. Danser's mailbox Inthe Main Office, or slide the letter under the door of The Holly SpIrit office In B250. Holly beauty pageant held here in RV's auditorium which was won by junior Terrina White with a little en couragement and support from her family. The other participants in the pag eant were Chery Tabak, Amy Lea Sarge, Andrea Elaine Stockum and Denise Marie Donahue. Following the annou ncement of the winner, Terrina was presented with a crown, bouquet of roses and a trophy by Mrs. Esther Fowlie, who had won the pageant in 1935. From her interview Terrina was not out to win the pageant, but to get the title and wear it. She wanted to win in order to prove to herself that she can do anything she put her mind to. When asked about her feelings concerning the competition, Terrina said that she was not nervous at all until the time actually came. "I wasn't nervous about the com petition until I was sitting down on stage looking at everybody and every body looking at me," Terrina admitted. Terrina will be Mt. Holly's repre sentative now in various of the future county activities. Continued from Page 2 Blood flows freely lect blood is sterile and disposable. Nothing is ever reused. Another reason is simply fear. The actual donation lasts about ten min utes and there is only a little pain. And that little pain could mean life to five people. If you are interested in giving blood, or just volunteering for the American Red Cross, contact Linda E. Williams at (609) 386-1073 or call 1-800-26-BLOOD between 9:30 5:30. Members of the RVRHS Marching band celebrate at Hershy Park after their First Place finish in the Band Class C at the Chocolatetown Festival held recently in Hershy, Pennsylvania. Class of 1991 makes plans for finale by Deanna Sahina As the school year comes to an end, the juniors are looking forwrd to their senior year. Some of the closing activities for the juniors are the lock-in, sponsored by the student council, and junior class on June 1-2, to which everyone is invited. As always the Farewell Dance for the seniors, sponsered by the juniors, will take place in June. Junior Class President Heather Corcoran said, "We can make our senior year just as profitable and fun as our junior year. In order to do this, more people have to help and come up with ideas." In order for a good Homecoming, some meetings will be sc~eduled for student council over the summer. Some senior class activities are more volleyball nights and a class picnic. Suggestions or ideas are open to all. Classes visit Washington Josue H. Cortes Mr. Joe Holland and Miss Madison's classes recently visited Washington, D.C. The groups departed Mt. Holly at 6:30 am and arrived in Washington at 10:00 am, where they were met by a tour guide. The guide took them to visit several places such as the Wahington Monument, the Lincoln and Vietnam Memorials, the White House, the Library of Congress and finally, the Smithsonian. Since most of the students in both classes are from foreign coun tries, this was the first time that the had the opportunity to visit the nation's capital. After a day full of memorable visits, the groups returned to Mt. Holly around 8:30 pm. After an uneventful flight to Orlando, the buses took the students to the Mala Vista Hotel. Everyone received their rooms and hurried to change for Water Mania, the water park next door. A wave pool and vol Thursday, the seniors visited EPCOT Center and the new Disney MGM Studios. EPCOT's attractions included Spaceship Earth, the Diving Seas, Journey into Imagination and the Wonders of Life. Not to be forgotten was the World Showcase. Countries such as Mex ico, France and Germany were repre sented by shopping stops as well as The RV seniors visited the Medevil Castle to watch a "Royal Tournament" where each section had their knight to cheer for. The catch was that dinner was served without utencils. About 4 1/2 days and about a million pictures later it was time to head for the airport. Don't let the ears fool you. Are you able to recog nize these four seniors? (L-R: Mike Eder, Gene Kadar, Mark Siefco, and Max Diego.) leyball highlighted Water Mania as Mr. Corcoran took charge and chal lenged all comers for a late game of volleyball. Wednesday was the class' intro duction to the Magic Kingdom. Such attractions as Space Mountain, the Mad Hatter's Tea Party, and Cinderella's Castle were popular with the RV seniors. Space Mountain was popular because the entire roller coaster ride is in complete darkness. As soon as RV hit the park, most hUTlied toward it to avoid the crowds that gathered soon after. restaurants. A big attraction at EPCOT was Illuminations, a lazer/light show held every night on the lake that separates Future World and the World Show case. MGM Studios had a completely different concept. Its attractions dis played the history as well as the actual production of movies and telvision as we know them today. Friday was reserved for River Country. Someone could take a dip in the pool, lay on the beach, rent a motor boat, go on the waterslides or visit Discovery Island. Sean Town relaxes after one of many delicious DisneyWorld meals. Enjoy all the extra help, compliments, and attention you receive during your freshman year, this is the last YOU'll see of it! Don't let anyone discourage you from trying anything! Experiecne things for your self and form your own opinion. No one knows what's better for you than yourself, If anything be a leader not a follower, you'll go further in life! And most important don't let the upper classmen intimidate you. Always remember "Anything they can do you can do better! Good luck."-Janete Hatcher "My advice to next year's freshmen is never trust your friends. June 1990 Holly Spirit Page 43 Boys Varsity Tennis team experiences tough time Coach Jim Davidson's boys tennis team is having a subpar season as they are being plagued by inconsistency and inexperience. At press time the team's record stands at 5-10. Lopsided losses have come against Holy Cross (0-5) and (1-4), Shawnee (1-4) and (1-4) and Lenape (1-4). The devils lost five matches by a score of 2-3. These narrow defeats came at the hands of Pemberton (twice), Willingboro, Hamilton West (4-1), Burlington City (4-1) and Palmyra (5-0). Individually, Junior John Sharp has recorded a 14-2 record at first singles while Senior co-captain Jarrett Laraway and Sophomore Arit Arshad have a combind 2-14 mark at second singles. Boys Varsity Track has its moments by Angela Byrnes The boys varsity track team has had many hard-earned improve ments this season according to Mr. Joseph Holland, the team's coach, but injuries to key athletes have proven costly to the overall success of the team. This season the team found their stiffest competition with Willingboro, Shawnee and Holy Cross. The high points of this season were the team's dazzling victories over Lenape and Pemberton. Coach Holland is proud of the overall team effort. Senior Ricky Jones was named Most Valuable Player and Seniors John Klenk and Brian Willem were given Coach's Awards. Theteamfinishedwith a4-4 record and ended the season in fourth place in their league. Page 44 Holly Spirit June 1990 Second year coach Mr. Morse leads Girls Varsity track to 4-6 record by Deanna Sahina The girls track team, backed by Mr. Michael Morse, is having a tough time enen though hard efforts were put out. In the beginning of the season, the numbers increased significantly compared to the amount of last year's participants. However, throughoutthe season the number dwindled incredi bly due to injuries, outside problems and quitting. Even though the team is young, they have shown great improvement this season battling to obtain an overal record of 4-6. Coach Morse said, "Some of the high points were beating Pemberton by two points and Nottinghame by three points without Janeeccia Berry. The low points were loosing Berry and Odweda Chambers to injuries." Special awards went to Christene DeDeo who took 5th place in the dis cus at the Woodberry relays with a school record breaking throw of 108'6" and 4th place at the Pennsau ken Open throwing 108'5". DeDeo also was the discus Burlington County Liberty Division champion throwing 104'10". Sonja Washington finished 2nd in the shot put in the Burlington County Liberty Divion Championships. DeDeo and Washington also combined to set the shot put relay record at 58'1/2" at Hadden Town ship. In the Burlington County Open, Washington finished third in the shot put (31 '8") and fourth in the discus (101'4") and DeDeo took a close second in the discus setting the school record once again in the discus (112'8") and placed fourth in the shot put (29'11"). Beth Wirth also took a third in this meet in the javelin (89'6"). DeDeo was the only girl to qualify for the State Championships held in r South Plainesfield with her second place finish in the discus at the South Jersey Sectional, missing first by only one inch. Morse wants to thank the girls and the coaches for all their efforts. Beth Wirth talks with Coach Morse about her choice of weapons, namely the javelin. Mr. Jim DiCicco coaches the girls weights. Victor Pagan practices the discus under the watchful eye of Mr. Gene Kline, boys weight coach. This season RV faired well in that department, especially in the javelin. June 1990 More Sports Varsity Softball by Shannon Shields The varsity softball team, coached by Miss Debbie Hauth, is doing well so far this season standing on a 4-4 record at press time. The players and their positions include Kim Collier and Marisa Maziarz (pitcher), Eve Hackett (catcher), Nikki Utez and Heaher Corcoran (first base), Missy Cloak and Jen Ward (second base), Mich elle Nemeth (third base), Jen Xiques (shortstop), Jen Willem (left field), Sandy Stringham (center field) and Rochelle Nisbeth and Anne Millich (right field). According to Coach Hauth, the varsity softball team's strengths in clude pitching, and the ability to field and make plays and the team's weak ness seems to be youth. Miss Hauth said, "They are young and make some costly mental errors; however, with each game they have gotten better in terms of the whole game." Miss Hauth also stated that she wants her team to do well in the league and qualify forthe tournament. She feels that every member contrib utes valuable things to the team. "All are contributors-you can't have a team without that," Coach Hauth said. Stringham is a strong outfielder who usually inaugarates scoring runs and winning games when she gets on base. Sandy, a senior, has also brought a good deal of experience to the team which has helped the younger players as they look up to her. In addition, the pitching staff of Marisa and Kim have been consistent in not giving up many hits and suc ceeding in helping to keep the team in the game. The team's shortstop Xiques said, "It's a team effort and we are learning how to work together and win together." The varsity softball team may go far because, as Miss Hauth says, "They are capable of playing good ball they just have to believe it." Varsity Lacrosse by Deanna Sahina As tradition, the varsity lacross team has made the state tournament once again having a 9-4-1 record at press time The teams the devils beat were Cherry Hill West, Cinnaminson, Maple Shade, Moorestown Friends, Cherry Hill East, Pennsauken, Camden Catholic and Eastern. The team tied Delran and lost to Collingswood, Lenape, Moorestown and Shawnee. The varsity team consists of Car rie Baczenas, Rayna Smith, Jacquie Dunphy, Cindy Jenkins, Joanne Gor don, Misty Watson, Maureen Moore, Maggie Nolder, Diane Hallowell, Noelle Ries, Julie Braham and Lauren Scudder. Carrie Baczenas' outlook on the state tournament is one of optimism. "When we work together we can do a great job and we can go far." Jacquie Dunphy said, "We have a lot of talent, but unfortunately we lost two key games." Freshman Softball by John Sharp Ms. Enos's Freshmen Softball team is 8-5 overall (4-5 in the Liberty Division) and assured of a .500 record with only 3 games remaining. The squad has been carried by excellent pitching and hitting but has been hin dered by errors in the field. The Lady Devils defeated Willing boro twice (17-2, 17-12), and also recorded victories over Delran (17-6), Hamilton West (16-12), Holy Cross (13-8), Pemberton (26-25), Burling ton Township (15-2) and Cinnamin son (10-0). They were defeated twice by Shawnee (2-7, 1-16), and also lost to Pemberton (5-7), Holy Cross (10 15), and Lenape (11-19). Jennifer Guant has been the Devils top pitcher, recording 63 strike outs. The offense, which has pro duced 160 runs in 13 games for an average of app. 12 runs a game, has been led by Shannon McDade's 30 hits, including 3 doubles, 1 triple, and 7 home runs. Kim Willoughby has punched out 24 hits, including 6 doubles and 2 triples while Sarah Peters has 21 hits, including 4 doubles and 3 triples. Jennifer Guant also contributed 21 hits to the offense, including 7 doubles and a triple while Valerie Hartman also registered 21 hits, including 2 doubles and a triple. The Devils have three games remaining, vs. Delran, Northern Burl ington and Lenape. JV Lacrosse by Alyssa Spitler Ms. Pam Bookman, coach of the junior varsity lacrosse team, is happy with the results of this season as the team vastly improved their record from last year. Coach Bookman said that she feels their season was very impres sive and that the team learned to play very well together compared to last year's season which was 3-11-1. Coach Bookman also said that one of their problems was that their nomi native aspect of the team decreased as the season ended. Continued on page 46 Holly Spirit Page 46 June 1990 Burlington County Scholastic League plans overdue realignment of schools by John Sharp Good news appears to be right around the corner for Rancocas Valley's coaches, athletes and fans. For years we have been forced to compete with hug~ powerhouses Shawnee, lenape, Willingboro, Cherokee, Pemberton and Holy Cross in the Liberty Division. Relief is finally in sight. On May 15th the Burlington County Athletic Directors submitted a proposal to the county superinten dents that would change the current two division into a three division align ment that would begin with the 1991 92 school year. The proposed alignment would divide up the Burlington County schools on the basis of size to ensure more balanced competition for all. The're would be a "Big School" divi sion, a "Mid-Sized School" division and a "Small School" division. The "Big School" division will in clude Cherokee, Holy Cross, lenape, Pemberton, Shawnee and Willing boro. The "Mid-Sized School" division will include Burlington City, Delran, Moorestown, Northern Burlington and Rancocas Valley. The "Small School" division will be composed of Borden town, Burlington Township, Florence, Maple Shade, Palmyra and River side. The proposed three division for mat is supported unanimously by the school superintendents, according to the head chairperson of the Burling ton County league, Mike Pilenza of Moorestown high school. The proposal will be voted on in November at the Burlington County league's executive meeting. It is expected to be approved. Pilenza also added that Cinnam inson would be contacted about re joining the leage. If so, they would be placed with the "Mid-Sized" division. Cinnaminson abandoned the Burlington County league in 1985. In this reporter's opinion they left in search of ''weaker competition." Pilenza also stated that Allentown High School, a "Mid-Sized" school located in Monmouth County, has also shown interest in joining the pro posed league. A few members of the BCl will visit Allentown High School Continued from page 45 Sports The juniors on the team were Jen Hannigan, Tara Walozyn, Vicki Gonzalez and Tammi Gaskill. Sophomores included Michelle Tables, Kim Hannigan, Rachel Run fala, Kara Jones, Chritine Yaccna, Tara O'Donnell, Paige Morris, Clare Macnab, Heather Katwak, Lori Haines, D~licia Flores, Melissa Durand and Lori Devlin. Freshmen participants were Amy Minnich, Kathy Craig, Betsy Braun, Shannon Banks and Carrie Bieden back. The team's toughest opponents were Shawnee, Moorestown and Cherry Hill West. Thefinal recordfortheteamwas 7 5-1 soon and discuss the idea with them. Our Athletic Directior, Carmen Cella, is overjoyed at the idea. Sev eral years ago he made a 3 division proposal, but it wasn't met with much enthusiasm. Rancocas Valley should benefit most from the new plan. As most athletes here understand, playing much bigger schools day in and day out can make it difficult to post good records and extremely difficult to capture a Liberty Division Champion ship. As the lone Group 3 school in the Liberty Division we often are good enough to beat almost everbody we face outside the conference, but yet struggle to achieve a winning mark inside the division. For example, this year's Varsity Soccer team was 4-7 in the Liberty, but were 10-1 outside of it. A split-up of the old divisions probably would not diminsh current rivalries. For example RV could still play "Big Schoo'" rivals in non-league games. On the other hand, the new proposal will give schools a chance to begin new rivalries, and you can bet they will. Some things never change. Freshman Baseball by Alyssa Spitler Head Coach of the freshman baseball team, Mr. leo Quinones, thinks that the team would do a lot better this year if they hadn't commit ted as many errors. However, im provement is being shown in every game and all the players are equally contributing. Coach Quinones said, "Commit ted errors are common, but if you don't come back offensively, that's when it hurts."
