Out of Season Preview of Out of Season Maya, a fourteen year old girl, lives on Rieley Bay. Her older brother, Saul, and her father are fishers. She has a relatively normal life. Although everyday, early in the morning she sneaks out of the house, hops into her kayak and starts to paddle to a near rock bank. A few weeks ago she discovered a family of sea otters living there. She keeps it a secret, for good reason: last year a man up the coast shot a sea otter saying it was destoying his catch. Surely if anyone knew about them they would be in big danger. One morning Maya went out to see the otter when soon she noticed up the hill was a man staring out into the water looking at her. Review for Out of Season Out of Season was a wonderful read. A certainly great novel of 111 pages. From calm and soothing to action packed and breathtaking, the book keeps the reader engaged. It’s a realistic reflection on animals and nature. A stong female role was put in well. Feelings are strong throughout the book and well said. Never too slow or fast, always maintaining good pace. Out of Season is a good book for any age group. I loved this oustanding book. Maya and her family get caught in a dangerous game to save the sea otters from poachers. “They have black eyes and teddy bear snouts, and they curve through the water like acrbats when playing in the waves.” “I sink back into the tree trunk. Honestly this was the last thing in the world I expected. What are they doing? Are they spying on me?” AUTHOR: Kari Jones POSTER BY: Magritte Gordaneer POSTER ASSISTANCE (GRAPHICS): Emdash publishing PUBLISHER: Orca Currents, Victoria, BC — 2012
