I want to start with the poet Phillis Wheatley. When I first studied her (granted, a few years back!) I was
fascinated to learn that a woman - let alone a BLACK woman - at that time would be allowed to write poetry! I was
blown away by the beauty, the revelations, and the fact that not only was she a well-known woman poet at the time,
but one of the best known poets PERIOD. That's not to say that it was easy for her - far from it.

To end our look at the life and work of Wheatley, we'll TRY TO study "The Trials of Phillis Wheatley "America's
First Black Poet and Encounters with the Founding Fathers" and INFORMATIONAL TEXT written by Henry Louis
Gates, Jr. Unfortunately, I can't find a free version of it! I'll continue to look for excerpts that we can discuss......
We'll continue the poetry portion of this unit with some work by another well-known female poet, Anne
Bradstreet, then end the section with a poem or two by Edward Taylor.
From there I plan to move into the Informational Texts "Of Plymouth Plantation" excerpts; "The Selling of
Joseph: A Memorial," A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson (and autobiography),
and Jonathan Edwards' famous sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God."
The unit is scheduled to end with the drama The Crucible - which, although it was not written in this time period,
