French: Read and understand complex written French, containing complex language, in
less familiar contexts (90561)
Evidence Statement
Note: For Question One and Question Two, candidates are required to identify how the test “works”, eg The fact
that the reference to spending time in public transport is given 0 points means that’s a good aspect of living in the
country (less time in public transport).
Higher level information: Merit level information is underlined, and Excellence level information is in bold.
Question One
Excellence:
Paris is never boring; it has every thing that you need for city living, e.g. restaurants, theatres … (some
supporting evidence)
But (must show contrast) it also has quiet areas / suburbs / quarters with parks and room to go bike
riding / bikes
You are living in the heart / middle / centre of all that is currently happening in the arts
The points are allocated in such a way that every statement which is pro-Paris is worth 2 points (therefore,
if you love living in Paris, you will end up with a high score).
Merit:
Doesn’t make the links required for Ex or gets one Ex point and conveys ideas such as:
Paris is a wonderful / magnificent, lively city. (“living town” not acceptable)
You are surrounded by / in the middle of art and culture
It also has quiet areas with parks and bikes
There are lots of cafes where you can sit outside and watch the comings and goings / people passing by. (or can be
used for Question Two)
Achievement:
Conveys some of the basic information such as:
There are different districts / quarters / suburbs, lots of life and atmosphere
There are lots of shops / fashion / fashionable boutiques
Paris has everything essential for city life: bars, restaurants, theatres, social life (any three)
Cinemas and theatres are close by
It has great public transport – the Metro
You don’t have to talk to your neighbours / You only have to say hello to your neighbours on the stairs

Question Two
Excellence:
More likely to be able to live in your dream house, eg an old farm(house) / country house with large
windows / views over country
(A lot of / There’s a big choice of) smaller cities and towns in the provinces / in Province offer all the
advantages of Paris but with none of the hassles
You can get to know your neighbours and become good friends with them
The points are allocated so that every statement that is a positive for the country / provinces / Province has
0 points (so if you prefer the country, you will have a low score).
Merit:
Doesn’t make the links required for Ex or gets one Ex point and conveys ideas such as:
Lots of towns outside of Paris have atmosphere, climate, and environment
Work is not a / the main priority – you have time for other things
The provinces are a much better place to bring up children
There is less traffic and you spend less time commuting / on public transport
Achievement:
Conveys some of the basic information such as:
Have a (better) quality of life (or can be used for Question Three)
More time to live life / have a siesta in the garden / a lazy Sunday
Better climate in the provinces
Can have a dog without annoying neighbours / your barking dog won’t annoy neighbours

Question Three
Reasons for moving:
They want the different / better quality of life offered by the provinces, eg a smaller town and a better
climate (some supporting evidence)
Merit: Has part of the Excellence answer and some supporting detail
These people are sick of / fed up with the noise, pollution, expensive life, accommodation which is too small.
6 million people / 60 % of population in the Paris region say they want to move away and each year 200 000 of them
do it.
Achievement: Has some basic information, eg
(Life in) Paris is too fast, too complex / complicated
The results at the end of the test:
If you get 13 points, it means that you fit the life in Paris; so if you live in the provinces, you should ask
yourself why you are living there. (or similar explanation)
If you get 7 points, it means that you are better suited to living in the country; so if for you, living in Paris is
a nightmare, you should pack your bags. (or similar explanation).
Merit: One of the above
Achievement: An imprecise explanation part of the above
Compromise:
Living in Paris might be a stage in your professional life or that of your partner, so you might choose to
move away later
A smaller town / city can also offer all the advantages of Paris but without the hassles (if not mentioned for
Question Two).
Merit:
Later on, you plan to move away or share your time between Paris and regions.
If you live in Paris, you might like to go to the country for your holidays.
Or if you live in the country, you might like to go to Paris for a great weekend / a visit.
Achievement:
You might want to be in Paris for now but not forever
You could divide your time between Paris and the country

Question Four
Arriving in France:
(On her first visit) She had had to get out / show / present (not “fill in”) all sorts of papers to prove that she
could stay in France for more than three months, so entering France is easier. (or similar explanation)
The immigration officer barely looked at her
She entered France without a visa
She could stay for more than three months
Beggars:
She thought there was a whole new generation / different kind of immigrants who had arrived in France not
so long ago / since her last trip.
Some of the immigrant women wore / (they) had covered / hidden face and head
She thought they were new immigrants / recently arrived
A lot more beggars, homeless, immigrants were around than she remembered
Women wore the traditional clothing of their country
Language:
The French are proud of their language and want to preserve it, but the French equivalents of these
(English) words aren’t “cool”, (so that’s why they use English). (or similar explanation)
It was surprising because French people are usually proud of their language
When she asked her friend about it, the friend exclaimed these words were not as “cool”
You hear English all the time in TV ads or everyday conversations.
