AAUW: What Are We Up To, Now?
You will want to bring a friend to the September 17 meeting of the
Virginia Beach branch of AAUW! You might win a prize. You might
learn something. You will definitely have fun.
The September program will be an overview of our branch focus and
activities for the coming year. The inimitable Sally Daniel will start
the evening by creating a festive atmosphere of camaraderie. Our
president, Sally Pattison-Cisna, will greet the membership with her
vision of how our branch will contribute to our local needs and to
the goals of our national office. Vice presidents and committee
chairs will describe the various ways we all work toward our goals of
advancing women's rights and educational opportunities as well as
the social activities which bond and broaden us.
Each member is encouraged to bring a friend to the meeting to
introduce potential members to our organization; your friend might
win a prize, too! We hope to see you Wednesday, September 17, at
6:30 at the Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library at 4100 Virginia
Beach Blvd in Virginia Beach.

The President’s Post,
September 2014
September 2014
Why are you part of AAUW Virginia Beach? Is it just fun, a book club (or two?), dining
group, community outreach, or a serious desire to learn and work on women’s issues?
Whatever your reasons, I hope this is a year in which AAUW becomes or continues to be a very
special part of your life. Your time, energy, and inspiration will make our branch strong,
special, and significantly serving women and girls.
So, how will this adventure begin? Our first branch meeting will introduce you to our
new year. I am so pleased that our chairs and VP’s are so enthusiastic about their missions! I
hope you find their excitement so contagious you must help out! We will continue our tried
and true projects and introduce new efforts such as a fall mixer with TCC and VWC students,
our members, and our friends to strengthen our relationship with Virginia Beach college
women. We will, also, have one late morning Saturday branch meeting in February.
We have three local and state special initiatives this year: STEM, Human Trafficking,
and Pay Equity. Among many other acclamations for STEM VB one young lady left saying “I
want to do this every month!” We will excite another group of middle school girls this spring
with our second STEM Conference at TCC VB. Human Trafficking is a new initiative for us. This
horrid practice has become a $9 billion business and is the fastest growing illegal industry in
the U.S. This year we’ll study human trafficking to find some way to help reduce this threat to
women and girls in Virginia Beach. It seems pay equity for women and girls is a never ending
battle but we’ll inform ourselves, write our legislators, learn more, and spread the word
working to right this wrong, too.
We have a lot on our AAUW plate this year. Come savor every minute of fun, fellowship,
service and learning as the AAUW Virginia Beach!

AAUW Virginia Beach Survey: Summary of our 2013-2014 Year
https://www.surveymonkey.com/results/SM-CVF32M58/
Here’s what the seventeen of you who took our 2013-2014 Survey told us. We wish everyone had taken the survey so
our data could be more accurate but you seventeen are represented here because you took the time. Here is what you
told us.
Of the AAUW four missions which are the most important to you? You replied 1st: Philanthropy, 2nd Education; 3rd
Advocacy; and 4th Research.
Of our seven branch programs Sep 2013-May 2014 you chose as your favorites:
1st: February, Ann Grandy, ODU Development Corp. and Founder of ODU’annual Girls’ Leadership Conference;
2nd was a tie: April, Peggy Sijswerda, Publisher and Editor of Tidewater Women and Tidewater Family magazines and
author and November: Lynn Waltz, ODU Professor, New Media & Journalism
3rd: September: Sex Trafficking Panel and Discussion
When asked if you would attend our Summer Planning Meeting: 6 replied yes, 3 tentative; and 6 no. (13 attended)
If we were to change our meeting date and time, which day of the week and time would be best for you? Options are
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 6:30 or Saturday at 2 p.m.
Tie: Wednesday and Saturday
Knowing that philanthropy is a requirement of our branch by our national organization, how many (1-5) fundraising
events do you feel our brand should participate in during the course of a year? 53% of you answered five; 27% chose
four; 13% chose three, and 7% chose two; none chose 1!
So, how should we use our results to inform our AAUW Virginia Beach programs?
п‚·
Philanthropy is “altruistic concern for human welfare and advancement, usually manifested by donations
of money, property, or work to needy persons, by endowment of institutions of learning and hospitals, and
by generosity to other socially useful purposes.” Over half of our respondents chose philanthropy as the AAUW
mission most important to them. We feel this is encouragement to continue raising funds for AAUW Funds and
our local scholarship fund.
п‚·
Wednesday and Saturday are your chosen meeting days. We will continue our Wednesday branch meetings
except for the often cold, overcast month of February when we will meet on a Saturday at 11am.
п‚·
Over half of you stated we would need five fund raisers to raise our money to support our donations to AAUW
National and our local scholarship funds. We will continue our fund raisers.

Linda Todd Scholarship Recipients
The 2014 recipients of the Linda Todd Scholarship were recognized at the May banquet. Suzanne Vosefski
who is finishing her degree at Tidewater Community College and Jodie Lynn Koch who is finishing her degree
at Virginia Wesleyan College, each recipient received an $800 scholarship from our branch. Please review the
full profile of each student on the branch website.
Enjoy A “Beerrelevance: Old World Meets New World” on October 18th!
Join us on Saturday, October 18th, from 5 to 7:30pm at Total Wine & More, located at 1744 Laskin Road,
Virginia Beach for a beer tasting event themed around beers from the Old World and the New World. The
tasting will include a variety of different beers, light fare and possibly a mini silent auction. Cost for the beer
tasting is $25 per person. Tickets are available online as well as at the September and October Branch
meetings. Also, $10 of each ticket will benefit the Linda Todd Scholarship fund. Tickets are available now
online at http://virginiabeach-va.aauw.net/scholarship/fundraisers/
Norfolk Florist Cards Fundraiser
Once again we will be selling Free Flower Fundraiser Cards through Norfolk Florist. For each card sold we will
receive $10 for our local scholarship fund and our supporters are able to redeem free flowers for a year starting
in December. The cards will be available for purchase from October 15th through November 23rd. The cost is
$35 per card and the goal is to sell 100 cards and raise $1000. The key will be to sell to people outside of our
branch who support our mission. Feel free to ask for a $10 donation if they won't use the card. Happy Selling
Please note the free flowers are not available on Valentine's Day, Easter Sunday, Professional Secretaries'
Day, Mother's Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and the 7 days before these holidays.
Donation Form
Donations can be made directly to the scholarship fund using the branch donation form. The form is available
on the branch’s website and will be available at branch meetings. For your convenience, a space for
memoriam donations has been added to the form. This way your donation intentions will be clear to the
branch and proper notifications can be made.

Mix, Meet, Greet, Mentor and Help Build Our Chapter on September 24th!
AAUW Virginia Beach will sponsor its first College Mixer for women students from Virginia Wesleyan College and
Tidewater Community College. This mixer is a joint project of our College-University Relations and Membership
Committees. The Virginian Pilot is sending a reporter to cover our event. Come help make this a great story for AAUW
Virginia Beach!
Cactus Jack’s Restaurant
2736 Atlantic Avenue, at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront
Wednesday, September 24, 2014 from 6-8 pm
Please, come to:
(1) Develop stronger institutional ties and mentoring relationships with VB college women
(2) Enhance our AAUW-VB membership recruitment
(3) Socialize, while increasing our visibility in the Community.
Our fun will begin with the gracious Sally Daniel’s ice-breaker. Then we will introduce AAUW and upcoming activities of
our VB chapter for the 2014-15 year. Then we will share our initiatives on AAUW GOTV/"get out the vote efforts" for the
mid-term elections, our STEM TechSavvy conference, and investigation and ultimate action to address human
trafficking locally. There will be sign-up sheets for volunteers for either project.
As for our membership outreach efforts, each chapter member is strongly encouraged to invite a friend or colleague.
You and your guest(s) will enjoy the decor of Cactus Jacks. The restaurant has a large parking lot in the back of the
building for convenient oceanfront parking. A sizable front patio will accommodate our evening program. As an added
bonus, we will be entertained by a two piece acoustical band after 7pm.
This is a great way for us to mix and mingle with local college students in a relaxed atmosphere. We can use this as an
opportunity to create a larger community of activism speaking up for all women, girls, and families. This is also a perfect
event to attend with a friend! Come out to happy hour, inspire young students, share the mission and vision, and
support the AAUW. Please pass along the event flyer that you will be sent by email.
RSVP by calling or texting 757-746-7183 no later than Sept. 18.

Matters
As summer comes to a close, and the last holiday
of the season moves in, I am delighted when I look
forward and envision another year with my AAUW
sisters. The planning committee has amazing events in
the making, there are terrific speakers scheduled for our
Wednesday evening branch meetings, and the reading
lists have been chosen for the book clubs. These are all
spectacular woman-centric events sparking thought and
discussion among all of us. The Virginia Beach branch is
fantastic!
What is one thing that could make the AAUW
Virginia Beach branch even more fantastic? More
members!
AAUW has been empowering women for well
over a century! Becoming and remaining a member
continues that legacy for all of the women who will
come after us. Through research, campus leadership,
legal advocacy, scholarships, and so much more, the
AAUW works to improve the lives of women and their
families. Take the time to share the mission and vision of
the AAUW with your friends and family, bring a friend to
an AAUW Virginia Beach branch event, and keep your
membership current. Working for equality cannot be
done alone, we need an army of dedicated and strong
members to make a difference.

Movie Sisters
Reel in Summer
Films and Fun!
AAUW Virginia Beach Movie Sisters were busy this
summer. If you weren’t with us you were missed! We
found a rich diversity of movies written, directed or
produced by women. Our goal is to enjoy one weekday
and one weekend movie each month. Announcements
are emailed to the branch the week of the movie’s
show time. Our next show will be a weekend show.
Come and bring a friend!
Since May the AAUW Virginia Beach Movie Sisters
gathered to see an amazing variety of films including
Maleficent, Belle, How to Train Your Dragon 2, and The
Hundred Foot Journey. Usually we use Regal Columbus
Stadium 12 to see our shows and afterwards met for
coffee at Barnes and Noble close by.
Movie Sisters meets mostly for fun, we admit, but, in
addition to popcorn, laughs, and great company we talk
about women’s roles in our movies, whether we would
recommend the show to our daughters and
granddaughters, how women’s roles may have changed
during the story, since the setting’s historical period,
and if the portrayal reminds us of our personal
experiences as women.

AAUW GOTV 2014
It’s My Vote I will be
Heard 2014-Getting
Out the Midterm Vote
Show your commitment to help register everyone to vote and embody the AAUW mission to
advocate. How? Volunteer to help register voters at TCC Virginia Beach Campus.
Leslie Tourigny is our AAUW Virginia Public Policy VP. She is, also, our past AAUW Virginia Beach Public Policy
Chair, President and SandScript editor.
In her position as our state Public Policy VP Leslie announced July 31st~
“AAUW’s 2012 “It’s My Vote: I Will Be Heard” campaign was a huge success in registering and turning out
millennial women voters. With the critical upcoming midterm elections on November 4, 2014, AAUW has
launched “It’s My Vote: I Will Be Heard 2014- Getting Out the Midterm Vote.” Our GOTV activities under our
newly awarded AAUW Public Policy Impact grant will support this initiative. Our goals for GOTV are: 1) At least
half of the active branches participate in at least one GOTV activity, such as voter registration drives,
candidate forums, etc.; and 2) We register at least 500 voters. After each event please send us the number of
voters whose applications you collected at the event so we can track progress towards the goals.”
We are planning seven voter registration events in different TCC VB buildings. There will be members trained
in voter registration to guide you. In fall 2012 under Sally Daniels, Public Policy VP, AAUW Virginia Beach
members registered 700 voters. Can we come close this fall? Choose your best day and time to Get Out the
Vote!
Contact Sally P: pattisonsj@gmail.com with the date and time you can register voters at TCC VB!

Due to logistics, I will need a check for $13 received by Oct 18. It should be made out to me, Marilyn Riddle, 2505
Goodrich Durfey, Williamsburg, VA 23185-8031. I have to reach a minimum of 15 by this date or the contract is
cancelled. The food is good. I eat there regularly with a group of local retired federal employees. This is the site
used by Road Scholars (formerly Elderhostel) for some of their programs.
I will forward to you a wish list of household items for Latisha’s House as soon as I receive it if you wish to bring an
expression of your support.
I would suggest that whether you are coming from the east or west that you take Exit 242A off of I-64 at the
intersection with Rt 199 W, then take Rt 60 ramp toward Williamsburg in about a mile, and finally left on Rt 60
itself for half a mile and the hotel is on the right. Be aware that there are two Clarions in Williamsburg. We will be
at the end identified as Bourbon Street Bar and Grill. The College of William and Mary has a home game at 12:30 so
that is not expected to impact our meeting. I look forward to seeing many of you.

AAUW Virginia Beach Book Club Announcements
Morning Book Club
Once a month we get up early and hie ourselves off to a restaurant to discuss a book we have previously
selected. The restaurants vary from month to month, and we are always open to finding ones we haven't
visited previously. The only requirements are that the place is reasonably quiet (so we can liven it up), serves
good food at a reasonable price, and we can get to it.
We have selected the books to be read from now through next June. Any member who wanted to do so
named one or more books and we, literally, drew the winners out of not a hat, but ...
This auspicious event takes place on the 1st Thursday of every month at 7:30 a.m. - except when it doesn't
because we have to change it for some reason, such as a holiday.
We don't meet In December. Instead, we get together with the evening book group for a pot-luck dinner at
someone's house.
Come join us!

Evening Book Club
The Evening Book Group meets on the second Tuesday of the month, at the homes of members. We alternate
potluck dinners and dessert-only meetings. We read books suggested by members and voted on at the June
meeting, when we set the schedule for the following year. One member reviews the book, followed by (and
sometimes interrupted by) discussion. Although we don't always agree, talk is lively and book-centered. New
members are welcome. For more information, contact Louise Wild at 757 422-1948 or at

AAUW Virginia Beach Meets with AAUW Virginia at State Leaders’ Meeting
July 26th AAUW Virginia Beach members met with other branches & the AAUW Virginia leaders in
Charlottesville. Carole Szetela, Neola Waller, Sally Daniel, and Sally Pattison-Cisna represented our branch.
The day began with guidance on Visioning & Action Planning Steps to review our branch mission, create a two
year vision to accomplish it, transform the vision ideas into a plan for actual events, plan steps to make those
events happen, and determine ways to measure their success, such as a 20% increase in membership or 100
girls participating in a STEM conference. The meeting’s next focus was 4 Guiding Principles for Stellar
Messaging to create powerful flyers. They recommended 1. Grab their attention; 2. Focus on what they need
& want, 3. Make the branch brand significant in the message; 4. Images/pictures are powerful. A lot to think
about!
