Sacred Heart School
Our mission is to form a Catholic community of faith and learning by living Gospel values,
promoting academic excellence, and serving those in need.
Thanksgiving Mass
On Tuesday, November 25th, the families and staff of Sacred Heart School will
celebrate a Thanksgiving liturgy at 7:00 P.M. at Sacred Heart Church. As in the past,
the children are asked to demonstrate their thankfulness for blessings received by
bringing a gift that will be distributed to “The Christmas Store”. This charity store is
located in Yankton and is a place where children, ages 3-12, can “shop” for gifts for
their family and will be open one day only, December 13th.
The gifts should NOT be wrapped and will be brought to the altar
during the liturgy. Some gift suggestions include: tools, cooking utensils,
jewelry, make up, toys, hats, hats with flashlights on them, gloves,
scarves, socks, slippers, t-shirts … Watch your student’s backpack for
more ideas to come.
In thanksgiving for our special friendships, Friends of Sacred Heart will serve
refreshments in the Sacred Heart Community Center following Mass.
Just in Case of Bad Weather…
We certainly hope that we won’t have bad weather, but unfortunately, winter
will soon be upon us. If school is canceled because of snow or inclement weather, it
will be announced using our new messaging system and over KYNT (1450), WNAX (570),
KVHT (106.3 FM) radio stations and both KELO and KTIV television.
Also on the subject of bad weather, please make sure your child comes with
the proper clothing (winter coat, hat, boots, gloves or mittens) to stay warm before
and after school as well as at recess time. The students will be outside if the air
temperature and/or wind chill is above 10 degrees at SHES or 0 degrees at SHMS.
It would be a great idea to mark all of your child’s belongings with his/her name so in
case they are misplaced, we can return them to their proper owner. We took lots of
nice winter clothing and boots at the end of last year to Goodwill because the items
were not claimed.
St. Sebastian Scholarship Fund
The St. Sebastian Fund has been established to provide financial assistance to
Catholic School students who desire to participate in non-sanctioned extracurricular
sporting activities. The scholarship is administered through the Catholic Foundation for
Eastern South Dakota. Application forms are available in the school offices.
Soup Luncheon a Great Success
This year’s Soup Luncheon was held on Tuesday, October 28th. It was a
great success, raising $1,847.46. The proceeds will go to “Operation
Christmas Child” and the Yankton Area Contact Center. We would like to
thank the many sponsors and everyone who attended for their generosity.
Reminder: There will be No School on Monday, November 10th (Conference Comp
Day) or Tuesday, November 11th (Veterans’ Day). Notices of conference times were sent
home on Tuesday, October 21st with the youngest and only child in each family. If you
did not receive one, please call Mrs. Rockne.
Principal’s Postings:
Thank you to Father Lange for his generous concert donation. Thank you to all
those who came to his concert and enjoyed his musical talents. The matching funds
have totaled over $25,000 for Sacred Heart School!
Thank you to The Sertoma Club and the Yankton Trustee Unit for providing
pumpkins to each elementary student PK-4. The students were very excited to take
the pumpkins home and start carving!

the top seller and kindergartner Aracelli Aune was the runner up. Mrs. Carda’s
fourth graders will be having a pizza party in celebration of selling the most cookie
dough as a class. Sacred Heart School raised $17, 627.61 this year with the Classic
Cookie Dough Fundraiser! Congratulations and thank you for your support!

Laura Hunhoff reading 6,540 minutes. The 4th - 5th grade student runner up was
Cole Pedersen who read 7,880 minutes and the student with the most minutes read
was Isaac Bahm who read 8,766 minutes. All students who met the reading goal
were able to attend the “READ IN” on Friday, October 3. Pizza, fun and prizes were
had by all! Congratulations to all who participated! I can’t wait until next year’s
challenge!
Conferences will be on Monday, November 3 and Thursday, November 6 from 48pm at both sites. Report cards will be given out the night of your child’s
conference. Babysitting will be provided at the elementary site in the music
room. Please check your child in and out with the adult in charge.
Newsflash!
Excitement is in the air at Sacred Heart School! Staff, students and
Priests are attending the 125th Diocesan Mass in Sioux Falls on January
21. We are fundraising in efforts to provide transportation. During
Parent-Teacher Conferences and the Vendor Blender we will be selling
some wonderful religious items that would make great gifts for
Christmas and other events, courtesy of Dave Goeckner. Some of the
items are: Lego Nativity and The Last Supper, prayer books, statues, rosaries and much
more. We will be taking orders and money for these items during Conferences and the
Vendor Blender. Thank you in advance for your support!
Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser
There will be a Pancake Breakfast to help fund our bus trip to the
125th Anniversary All Diocesan School Mass in Sioux Falls in January. The
breakfast will be held at the Knights of Columbus hall on north Broadway
serving from 8:00 A.M.-12:30 P.M., on Sunday, November 23, 2014. The
menu includes pancakes, sausages and scrambled eggs. Free Will Offering.
We will need families to volunteer to work for 1-hour shifts. Contact either
Principal if interested.
50/50 Raffle
The teachers and staff of Sacred Heart School are excited to announce
that they are selling tickets for a 50/50 raffle again this year. Tickets are
$1 each or 6 for $5. The winner will be announced at the K-4 Christmas
Concert on December 4 and will receive half of the money raised. The
proceeds will be used to purchase a gift that will be auctioned off at the
2015 Gala. Need not be present to win. If you’d like to participate in the 50/50 raffle,
please be watching for a note to come home soon or contact Mrs. Brodeur or your
classroom/homeroom teacher. Thank you for supporting SHS and good luck!
Spiritual Adoption
Thank you for helping your child develop a deeper understanding of
God’s love of life. Please continue to pray this prayer with your child
daily: Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to
spare the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted.
Third Month - November
I am about 3 inches long and I weigh 1 ounce, the same as five nickels and a penny. I can
squint, swallow, and move my tongue. Sometimes I take naps and sometimes I am
awake. I have fingernails and toenails and my own unique set of fingerprints. I can grab
something in my hand and hold tightly. Thank you for your prayers.
Speech Festival
The Sacred Heart Middle School Speech & Debate Club will participate in a
Speech Festival with Missouri Valley Christian Academy Monday,
November 17th. This year Sacred Heart Middle School will be the hosts!
Students in grades 6-8 will compete in the areas of Individual Speech
(humorous or prose), Paired Speech (humorous or prose), Reader's
Theater, and Group Improvisation. In the spring, students will participate
in debates. If you would like to donate treats (bars, cookies, etc.) for that
evening, please contact Mrs. Peterson. There is also a need for volunteers
to act as judges for the different events. Thank you to all who have helped
make this activity a success with supplies and donations!!
SHS TSA CLUB
Thank you so much to all of the families who have chosen to support the
TSA Club this school year! With the growth in our school over the years, we have
gained more staff members, so your support is more important than ever. We always
have a need for more, so it's not too late if you haven't joined yet. The main purpose of
TSA is to support the hardworking teachers and staff of SHS and show them that we
appreciate the dedication and values that they bring to our children. The money raised is
divided and given to the staff as a Christmas bonus. The cost to join is a $100 donation
per school year, which adds your name to the monthly restaurant gift card drawing. You
may also join at the $150 level, which enters your name into the monthly drawing, plus a
separate Christmas drawing to win $100. Donations under $100 are also welcomed. We
also accept donations of $50 gift cards to Charlie’s Pizza House or Minervas.
Checks made out to Sacred Heart School TSA Club may be dropped off at either
school office. It is still not too late to be entered in all the monthly drawings. All
memberships received by Friday November 21st will still be part of the September
and October drawings, which will be drawn November 22nd. If you have questions,
contact Jill Kouri (668-2792 or jill@thekouris.com

and support SHS at the same time.
Angel Tree
An ongoing tradition at Sacred Heart School, the Angel Tree gives parents an
opportunity to give teachers and staff a gift for their classroom or work area in
place of a Christmas gift. The teachers have written items of
varying costs, (all under $15) onto angels which are placed on a
Christmas tree in the entry way of each school. If you are
interested in participating in the Angel Tree, choose an angel off
of the tree, purchase the desired item, tape the original angel on
the gift and return it to school with your name written on the
angel.
Again this year, we are adding “Golden Angels”. Each teacher has written on
an angel a larger ticket item’ they desire for their classroom. If you are
interested in purchasing an item from a “Golden Angel”, please see Mrs. Haberman
at the elementary or Dr. Mulhair at the middle school for these special angels as
they will not be placed on trees in the entryways at both sites.
As always, THANK YOU for your generosity and kindness this holiday season
and all year through.

usual, but there are a bunch of other businesses that also participate in the
program. In many cases, the percentage of savings to you, the consumer, is
greater than it has ever been. We all need to shop for different items each
week and with a little planning, money you are already spending can work to
take dollars off your tuition; It’s free money! Even if your kids don’t attend
Sacred Heart School now, but will in the future, you can bank money towards
your tuition for when they do come! If you have an infant, you could be saving
up tuition for 5 or 6 years!

saving to go (available anywhere scrip is sold)

office of either school site, at either parish office, at the Yankton
Catholic Community Foundation Office, or at where you buy Scrip/HyVee cards after masses on Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning.
3) Write a check or submit cash with your order sheet which can be
dropped off at any of the locations named in step 2.
4) We will put your order together and have it ready for pick up ASAP
at any location you request.
5)

questions about SCRIP online or about making large orders for a specific
purpose please call us at 605-665-4585 for more details! We have most SCRIP

involve everyone in what is a huge effort of cooperation. It
takes all of us doing large and small jobs to make this awesome fundraiser
work and it is really important to the success of Sacred Heart School. The
Foundation Office has been calling new parents and parents who haven’t yet
been involved to invite them to join the fun and success that is the Gala. If
you’ve never been involved with the Gala or it’s been a while, come spend an
hour or two volunteering in some way and see what it’s all about! We greatly
appreciate all you do for Sacred Heart School; our families are what make this
school such an awesome place. Watch your emails, children’s
backpacks/folders and the Chalk Talk for upcoming Gala news!
