“The Year of Grace”
Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish • 2
When I hear the Gospel reading for this Sunday, I wonder what
that third servant was doing all that time, after he buried the talent he was given. Probably nothing. What strikes me is that the
word for money in this reading is “talent,” which in our language is an ability or skill. So maybe this parable can remind us
to use our abilities and not let them go to waste.
It is sad to see someone who is not very good at his job just because he never developed his inborn talents. But if you know
what gifts or abilities God gave you, you can develop them to be
much more than you expected. A person might be strong and
fast, but if she exercises and practices, she could be a great athlete. The same with a spiritual gift. Just having one doesn’t make
you a saint. So how do you know what gifts you have?
First, ask God in your prayers to show you what gifts you have
been given. Find a spiritual director, or even your parish priest,
and talk about your life, your strengths and weaknesses. Read
about saints and how they used their gifts to serve the Lord.
Read the scriptures, especially the Acts of the Apostles or the
Letters of Paul (e.g., 1 Corinthians 12:1–11). Listen humbly to
friends or loved ones who can tell you what strengths they see in
you.
Second, look for ways to use your gifts. Check the parish bulletin
ministry or your diocesan newspaper for activities and organizations that you could take part in. Hospitals, schools, shelters, and
nursing homes frequently offer opportunities for volunteers. If
one kind of service seems attractive to you, that could be God’s
way of telling you to try it. On the other hand, a job that seems
very challenging could be what you need to stretch your spiritual
muscles. Or you may see a need for some service that you can get
started in the parish or community.
Just remember that you are called to service by your baptism and
confirmation. Don’t bury that calling by procrastinating or being
afraid to try. Remember the “useless servant” with the one talent
who was fearful and lazy (Matthew 25:25–26). At least he can
remind us to use it or lose it.
para servir al SeГ±or.
miedo a probar.
estaba temeroso y perezoso (Mateo 25: 25-26).
In his first letter to the Thessalonian community Saint Paul says
that “the day of the Lord will come like a thief at night”- God will
come stealing life as we know it (1 Thessalonians 5:2). If however,
we pick it up and run with it at that point, perhaps something
new can be born in us.
The Parish Office will be closed on
Thursday, November, 27 and Friday, November 28
in observance of Thanksgiving Day.

BULLETIN DEADLINES
Our Lady of Good Counsel School
Enrichment Days are much anticipated at Our Lady of Good
Counsel School, and the students were excited to participate in
their one a few weeks ago. Enrichment Days are special days at
OLGC, with interactive and unique project-focused curriculum.
The students spent the entire day learning more about different
parts of the world by going from classroom to classroom and being “immersed” in that particular world area. Several countries
and parts of the world were represented; Africa, Philippines,
France, and studies on different land-forms (such as volcanos).
The second grade was able to construct a replica of the Eiffel
Tower with spaghetti noodles and marshmallows and the entire
school used sidewalk chalk to draw different county flags on the
school grounds. Again, thanks to the Meemic Foundation, for
providing the grant money to assist in these special activities!

Vocations Corner by Rev. Keith Romke
Go To The Source!
A little while back I encountered an inspiring priest who was
really good at magic tricks. He pulled out a rope and began to
amaze a group of us with his tricks. He then got a big smile on
his face, and simply asked the group: “If you want to find out
the trick, if you wanted to find out how to do it, how it works,
who would you ask? Would you ask your friend next to you?
You might, but this wouldn’t get you anywhere because they
don’t know the trick. If you want to know how things work, you
need to go to the source.”
He then continued to explain that even though his tricks might
at first glance be so tricky that we can’t figure them out, that
most of the time, life can be even trickier. And where is it that
we tend to turn when life is difficult or tricky? I’ll admit that I
go to all kinds of places to get answers as to how to fix my problems. While the whole time the one who truly knows the answers (GOD!) is simply waiting for me to ask. And unlike Magicians who don’t tell their secrets, God will reveal whatever is
best for us because He loves us and He never tries to trick us.
So, if you want to know the answers to the questions surrounding your life, go to the source!

2015 Guide Book & Directory
Advertising Opportunity
We are in the process of updating our annual Guide Book & Directory for the Church. This book will be the Who, What,
Where, When, Why and How of our Congregation. The
book is being provided at no cost to our Church, including the
mailing to each family, and again is being subsidized by local
businesses that advertise in it. If you own or manage a business
and would like to find out about advertising in our book, please
call the Church Office.
Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing show that 92.1%
of families would rather patronize a Guide Book & Directory advertiser over a non-advertiser. It “will pay” to advertise in our
new Guide Book & Directory.
