Brown chris@lloydminstersource.com Lloydminster city hall wants to regulate and control residents’ garbage and what is dumped at the city’s landfill. At Monday’s city council meeting, councillors approved a motion that would have the city clerk prepare a new Refuse Collection Bylaw. City Coun. Ken Baker introduced the motion, saying that it is about finding out if the collection system, which is currently in place, is done properly. “Are the costs of doing the service correct? Should we be expanding the service into more recyclables? These are the things that we want looked at,” he said. Baker said that the bylaw would look at waste and how the city goes along in collecting it. Along with the refuse bylaw, a potential new tipping fee will be included at the Lloydminster Landfill in the form of a landfill bylaw. Baker said that he cannot comment on a potential increase to services when he hasn’t seen the final report. “At the end of the day, we haven’t seen the draft of the bylaw,” he said. Baker said he wouldn’t be in favour of any increase to taxpayers because of the bylaw. “At the end of the day, we have to remember that we have to cover the landfill,” he said. Baker said that liability of the landfill was a potential $3 million. “Under the law, we have to set aside that much money to do that. So at the end of the day, we have to cover that landfill,” he said.  Lloydminster city council has decided to move forward on a $1.74 million contract without putting it out to tender for potential bids. On Monday, councillors awarded the mechanical waste water treatment facility preliminary design to ISL Engineering and Land Services, from Edmonton, for the cost of $1.74 million. “There was concern that a tender of this magnitude, which is just under $1.8 million, should be subjected to a tendering process,” Coun. Linnea Goodhand said. “That is absolutely true and that is what we do here at the city, we try to ensure that we get the best product for the least amount of dollars. “ISL was chosen for this particular stage because we are already a couple of stages into the project, and we are a few stages into the project and to go back and start fresh with a different consultant would not be terribly cost effective and certainly not time effective as well.” Goodhand said that the city decided that they would use the expertise that the city already has to go forward. “We want to be progressive and time effective as well,” she added. “The current mechanical waste water treatment facility is a SAGR system, which basically uses a lagoon.” Goodhand said, adding that the lagoons are a major part of the system and they have hit critical mass. “It’s currently doing as much as it can for a city of our size and we need to either improve it or expand it, or make a bold change to a new system,” she said. Councillors made the decision to go ahead, “to make those bold changes,” according to Goodhand. Goodhand said that the change would go to a mechanical system. If there is no change, the system would begin to fail. “Then the Saskatchewan Water Security would come in and penalize us for failing,” said Goodhand. Goodhand said that this move would make sure that the citizens’ needs were being met. “We are fine right now, but the needs assessments say that we won’t be fine for long. So the decision is what do we do and how quickly do we do it and how much will it cost us?” Goodhand said that the new system will be beneficial to the environment, which the city aspires to. “The expectation would be that it will provide better quality of water at the end of the system,” she said. “In the perfect world, there might be some good use for the clean water that comes out the other end.” Goodhand said that there will be some budget requests to move the project forward, but the consultant that has been hired as of today was to provide them with a preliminary design. “We are still in the question asking phase, so that they can provide us with the answers,” she said. “Then it will come before council as budget asks.” Goodhand said that the end goal is to have the new system in place for up to 40 years.  Veracity Financial Joins Investment Planning Counsel Veracity Financial Services is dedicated to providing comprehensive wealth management services and looks forward to continuing to serve clients in Lloydminster and surrounding area. Traffic lights coming in order of priority STAFF WRITER by Christopher W. Brown chris@lloydminstersource.com The corner of 25 Street and 53 Avenue will be more pedestrian friendly come the end of the year. At Monday’s meeting, council decided to move forward on installing traffic lights at the intersection. City Coun. Linnea Goodhand said that the intersection has been on council’s radar for some time, and now the project fits into the budget. “We know that there are more pedestrians crossing at this intersection, compared to other intersections that might need a traffic light,” she said. Goodhand said that with the schools in the area, this intersection is essentially a corridor for pedestrians. “It’s a corridor for small humans and big humans,” she said. Goodhand said that the intersection was looked at some time ago, and was scored on a scale up to 100, and the intersection scored the highest on all the intersections that were looked at during the time of inspection. “There are a number of factors that come into play and the number one is sheer traffic and that is self evident,” said Goodhand. “Posted speed signs was another, the faster or slower determines a little bit more on what the traffic lights are. Also, the pedestrian count, its another factor.” Goodhand said that each factor is weighted differently. “Our experts tell us that once you weigh each criteria, you come up with a number and that number creates a sense of urgency around that intersection,” she said. Currently there is a pedestrian cross walk at the intersection. “Again, if we took the number today, we might see a different outcome, but we can’t be completely current with our numbers,” she added. “We are dealing with some historical needs and we are going to address those needs going forward.” Goodhand admitted that this intersection isn’t the only one that is troublesome. “There are a lot of troublesome intersections that are in this town,” she said. “It’s just a matter of targeting (those intersection) in an order of priority.” The other intersection that was discussed was the three-way intersection near Lakeland College. “That intersection, I suspect, we see really high traffic counts but we don’t, believe, see really high pedestrian traffic there,” she said. The new traffic lights at the intersection will cost $181,594.00 plus GST. Streetlights going energy efficient by Christopher W. Brown chris@lloydminstersource.com The City of Lloydminster is looking at replacing the current set of streetlights with energy efficient LED lights, and is asking ATCO to pony up more money to do so. During Monday’s council meeting, councillors approved an increase of 0.5 per cent, from 10.5 to 11 per cent for franchising fees to ATCO Electric. The decision to increase the franchise fee came down to the ultimate decision of replacing the streetlights in the city, according to Coun. Ken Baker. “Someone has to pay for the power and the streetlights ... and we want to change the lighting system to LED lighting,” he said. Baker said that this would reduce the cost of operating the streetlights in the city. “It costs a certain amount of money to install them initially, but will cost less money to operate them,” he said. The councillor added that at the end of day, “Even if we saved 40 per cent on electrical power ... I think it’s a healthy saving.” That saving would come back to the city, according to Baker. Franchise fees are what utility companies pay to use the city’s rightof-ways, according to Baker. “ATCO provides services to the city, and they are able to use the • When you look up at the blue sky and see little white dots flying around, you’re actually seeing your own white blood cells. • The Pirate Bay tried buying their own island in hopes of making their own country with no copyright laws. • When bitten by caterpillars, plants send chemical SOS signals to parasitic wasps that attack the caterpillars. • Disney rejected “Back to the Future” because they felt the mother/son storyline was not appropriate. • Lego men have those little holes in the top of their head to allow air to pass through should a child ever get one stuck in their throat. • A moon-sized diamond was found in space and has been named “Lucy” after the Beatle’s song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”. Coun. Ken Baker right-of-ways that belong to the city. The right-of-ways have gas lines and power lines.” Baker said the franchise fee that is given to the city comes from the sale of power. He also added that the fees can also go back to the city in the form of cutting grass around the rightof-ways, and other upkeep the city does. “There are miles of right-of-ways in the city and they have to be looked after properly,” said Baker. Baker, who introduced the motion, said that the small increase would not hurt the taxpayers of the community. Alan Cayford, director of public works, said that the franchise fee is a small portion of the overall power bill that taxpayers see. “In an average power bill for someone that is using 625 kilowatts hours per month, based on the July rates is about 49 cents on your power bill,” he said. Volleyball, soccer and gymnastics might still be staples of grade school activity, but now kids can get vertical with the school’s new climbing wall and it’s sure to be a main draw going into the future. “We’re always looking for new ideas to add a more exciting twist to phys-ed and not only look at the traditional sports, but raise exposure to other areas as well,” said acting vice-principal Justin Saulnier. The wall was installed last April with safety in mind. The 10-by-20 foot unit is outfitted with safety mats and kids are challenged to make their way horizontally across the wall, rather than vertically, never climbing higher than 3.5 feet off the ground. They even play games on the wall; one even involves solving math equations. This comes as part of the school’s push to introduce activities to children that will carry on through their teen years and into adulthood. “With our phys-ed program, we’re really looking at life-long pursuits,” said Saulnier. “We also view this as an activity that can carry on as an active pursuit when the kids are older ... it’s definitely something that can promote activity for our whole school.” A big congratulations to COURTNEY BALLENDINE the n i d e plac t of 384 da o h w 12 ou Cana top across ual sts nn styli in the A nvention o ers C t t a Ch LLOYDMALL | 5211 - 44 STREET, LLOYDMINSTER WWW.CHATTERS.CA | 780.875.8702 The wall isn’t the only unique activity that students can take part in, either. From snowshoeing to making use of cross-country skis and the outdoor rink, kids are gaining more exposure to activities often forgotten in a traditional curriculum. They are even midway through their second year of certification for the National Archery in Schools program. “I thought that the climbing wall would be a natural fit,” said Saulnier. The idea for the wall came to him after he attended a conference from the Saskatchewan Physical Education Association, which advocated for rock climbing. But at the time, the school just didn’t have the funds to make it into a reality. That’s when the Trafalgar Community Association stepped in. The now disbanded group, which operated out of the Trafalgar Community Centre, couldn’t keep up with the repairs on the centre and came to the unanimous decision to sell the building and the land as an acreage. The money from the sale was split up and donated among communities around Trafalgar. “Most of our kids go to this school, from the community,” said Murray Wright, past member of the board for the Trafalgar Community Association. It was agreed; there wasn’t any better place to put a portion of their money but in the school. In total, $15,000 was received by Queen Elizabeth, with $8,000 put toward the purchase of the wall and the rest for new picnic tables for the play yard. “Schools can always use extra cash for different projects that they may not be able to get funding for otherwise,” said Wright. “So we put this $15,000 out to Queen Elizabeth School so that they could then do what they wanted for a special project. We left it up to them with what they wanted to do. And I couldn’t be happier with what they’ve done.” 6 NEWS LLOYDMINSTER SOURCE I WWW.LLOYDMINSTERSOURCE.COM I Thursday, November 13, 2014 Serving up laughs for dinner theatre by Jon Clarke jon@lloydminstersource.com Don’t Dress for Dinner, a farcical comedy about lies growing to ridiculous proportions, is coming to the Vic Juba Community Theatre from Nov. 19–21. And it’s part of a dinner theatre package. After savouring a full-course roast baron of Alberta beef dinner (with a dessert of chocolate cake or strawberry shortcake), guests will enjoy a onstage tale of lust, betrayal and misunderstandings. The play comes as the Community Players’ yearly performance and seasoned actor Matt Newman’s directorial debut. “The community players have done a play every year for the past several years and yeah, we’ve got a pretty good following,” said Newman. After reviewing potential plays to put on this year, he set out to bring something extra special to the audience. Being a huge fan of comedy himself, he knows how a good laugh-fest can affect the lives of viewers, if only for an evening or two. “I wanted something where people could completely forget about their daily lives, work and everything else and just really, really enjoy the moment,” said Newman. The Community Players agree; this one’s a real gut-buster. “If laughter is the best medicine, if that’s true, then this can cure cancer,” said David Woods, one of the cast members, “cause this is hilarious.” The story concerns a man named Bernard who plans a romantic weekend with his mistress while his wife is away. He invites his friend Robert along to visit as well, as an alibi. But it turns out that his wife and Robert are also secret lovers. Craziness ensues, as people’s alibis get confused and lies spin out of control. “This here is a very proficient way of escaping, Jon Clarke Photo Part of the Community Players and cast of Don’t Dress for Dinner: Cornelius Krahn, Joelle Collins, David Woods, Candace Scobie and Nadine Walker-Perry. for me. To go and be somebody completely unlike myself,” said Woods, who plays Robert. “Cause I’ve been married 24 years. Honestly – and this goes on the record for my wife – Robert is completely opposite of what I actually am.” This year, those who passed auditions and became Community Players come from all different walks of life, from teachers, healthcare workers, vet clinicians and car salespeople. Though they’ve got very busy, real lives, they’ve still been committed to practice more and more leading up to their performance this Nov. 19. “We try and put on as good a play as we can. Something you might see in the city and pay huge dollars for,” said Newman. “We’re trying to accumulate all the great things that all seven of us can come up with to make one play. “They’re like my second family, they’re a lot of fun,” he added. “They’ve got quirks, idiosyncrasies ... they’re a diverse cast that really comes together to make something special.” The cast expects a ton of laughs, but beyond that, actor Cornelius Krahn, who plays Bernard, thinks that this play will do one better than any run-ofthe-mill comedy. This franchise agreement requires ATCO Electric to pay the City a franchise fee based on ATCO Electric’s actual gross revenue from the Distribution Tariff rates charged for Distribution Access Service within the City of Lloydminster. The franchise fee agreement currently requires ATCO Electric to pay the City 10.5 per cent. The proposed amendment to the agreement would increase the franchise fee to 11 per cent effective January 1, 2015. The franchise fee applies to ATCO Electric’s revenues for delivery of electric power. It does not apply to the cost of the power itself. Franchise fees are recovered as part of a utility delivery charge, and are required to be billed as a separate charge on all electric billings. The effect on this charge is minimal for the average residential customer but will depend on a customer’s consumption. The effect on a residential customer using 625kWh is an increase of $0.49 per month. Customers should contact ATCO Electric if they would like more specific details regarding how this change would affect their bill. Opinion by Christopher W. Brown Chris@lloydminstersource.com At Monday’s Lloydminster city council meeting, council dropped a whopping $1.7 million without blinking an eye. The $1.7 million will go towards the preliminary design of the new mechanical water treatment facility. Now for a council that says that they are working for the people, I’m not really sure how handing out that much money to a company without going through the proper process, is truly working for the people. To Coun. Linnea Goodhand’s own admission, to the question shouldn’t have the project gone to tender, there was some concern about the project not going to tender. Council was told that the project was too far along to stop midway and get the project out to tender. It wouldn’t be cost effective and time efficient, councillors said. Even if you’re into a project waist deep, isn’t it proper governmental practice to send out a request for tender for a project of this magnitude? I’m all for making sure a project gets done on time and under cost, but wouldn’t it have been better for council to ask for a tender when a possible lower cost to the taxpayers could have been found? To council’s own admission, the current water treatment facility is operating OK. So, take the extra two or three months to get a proper estimate on the cost tender process would have taken and get the best company. The contract that was handed to the Edmonton company just doesn’t pass the smell test. And council seemed to have been OK with this lack of due process. All councillors, excluding Coun. Jason Whiting, who was absent from the meeting, voted in favour of handing this large chunk of money over to a company without a tendering process. Are we to believe that if we switched companies midstream everything would break down? Are we to believe that if a tender process was sent out, the project would have been delayed for a long period of time? I guess we will never actually know the answers to those questions. Council will have some explaining to do if they want the community to believe that giving this amount of money to a company, without exploring other potential options, was the right thing to do. @LloydSource LETTERS This Week’s WEATHER FRIDAY -16°C -19°C SATURDAY -13°C -15°C SUNDAY -10°C -15°C MONDAY -7°C -13°C LLoyDMinStER In touch with Canadian priorities To the editor, In a recent letter to the editor, Liberal MP Scott Brison attacked our government’s new job credit for small business and our record on the economy. Mr. Brison is not accurate and is in fact misleading Canadians with this information. He is wrong and ignores the fact that the business world has very strongly and vocally supported our government’s job credit. Small business’ support for our job credit, and the facts themselves, couldn’t be clearer. According to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, the job credit will create over 25,000 person years of employment. It will reduce the cost for Canadian employers by $550 million over the next two years and benefit 780,000 companies – over 90 per cent of businesses. This is a sound jobs and growth program for small business. Our plan for jobs and economic growth is working. I was pleased to learn that for the month of October, Statistics Canada announced an increase of 43,100 jobs, shattering the market expectations of a 5,000 job loss. The unemployment rate nationally is now the lowest it has been in six years, at 6.5 per cent. However, what’s more important is the long term trend. Since July 2009, Canadians have created over 1.2 million net new jobs, with an overwhelming majority of these being full time, private sector, high-wage jobs. Canada leads the G-7 in job growth and, on a relative basis, has created almost 20 per cent more jobs than our closest competitor. And with a balanced budget projected for the coming fiscal year, our government is committed to further lowering the tax burden to help families balance theirs. We have announced significant tax relief this fall through the Family Tax Cut – a federal tax credit that would allow a higher-income spouse to transfer up to $50,000 of taxable income to a spouse in a lower tax bracket. We’re also proposing to increase the Universal Child Care Benefit to $160 per month, up from $100 per month; and to increase the Child Care Expense Deduction dollar limits by $1,000. These measures, included with other tax-relief measures put in place by our government since 2006, will result in $4,500 worth of savings for an average Canadian family. Mr. Brison claims that our Government is “out of touch” with the priorities of Canadians. Mr. Brison was a minister in the previous Liberal government that took billions of dollars – yes, billions from the EI fund to spend on other items. Songwriter brings prairie inspiration to The Root by Jon Clarke jon@lloydminstersource.com Think about the country. The farm. Plains that go on forever in all directions. That’s where Megan Nash comes from; that was her childhood. And she found a piece of that over the summer time, in Palmer Saskatchewan. “It’s absolutely breathtaking out here, the view,” says Nash. “There’s nothing in the way to see the sunset. So that’s definitely inspired my lyrics as well.” The Saskatchewan-born singer/songwriter with a voice that’s way bigger than most people’s grew up in a place like that, on a farm wedged between a hamlet and a town. And it was there, as a child, where she always felt most inspired, trudging through patches of field or watching a Saskatchewan twilight. Her last album was a digital EP called She Said, She Said, a three-song jaunt released in September 2013, which she went on to share with many across the province. But after visiting the Palmer Church for a show, her songwriting went into overdrive. It was sense of community within the town and the strange energy which seemed to exist within the church walls that did it for her. So at the tail-end of springtime, she’d return to Palmer once again to make it her new home. She now spends most of her time in the 100-yearold church, which stopped being a place of worship in the 70s and became a place for community gatherings and live shows instead. “I’ve talked to people who used to attend this church and they love what’s been done to it and how it’s being used now,” she says. “It’s a rural church that is still active in a sense. There are still people paying attention to it, loving it.” So is she. Every day and many nights over the summertime, Nash spent countless hours within the church with a guitar in hand, soaking in the inspiration, practicing her guitar skills and writing the lyrics for her new album, Song Harvest Volume 1, due for release sometime in the new year. “With this album I really wanted to put myself out of my comfort zone, really wanted to,” she says, and that the isolation helps not only as an incentive to continue playing, but serves as an emotional conductor for her lyrics. “What draws me to the prairies is that feeling of vulnerability,” says Nash. “There are no trees to protect you. You’re just out there against the elements. You feel that breeze, you feel that wind.” The church has become important to her and so has the land surrounding it. It’s a place of isolation and solitude, but it also reminds her of her childhood. That hodgepodge of nostalgia and raw feeling are coming together to make for a real human element to the songs she’s recorded for Song Harvest. “It was really important for this album to feel live off the floor, no overdubs and what you hear is what I’m capable of,” says Nash. “And sure it’s flawed, but it’s real ... A raw, human element is OK, it doesn’t have to be perfect.” Couple that with the fact that she recorded her album in the church as well and people can expect a live, off the floor feel, with all the beautiful imperfections that come with that style of recording. “With this album I really wanted to put myself out of my comfort zone,” she says and that should show in the lyrics she’s written in the Palmer Church. They’re honest ones, touching on those feelings of vulnerability and isolation one gets See “Megan Nash,” Page 20 LloydMall 780-875-0203 Introduction to Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams During this one day course you will learn how to read and understand a P&ID, enabling better communication with Engineering and Construction disciplines. His dad was in the military, so they moved around a lot. As he grew up, he say the landscapes change. But one thing stuck with him. “Music was kind of one thing that I did take with me everywhere I went,” he said. One day, he’d be a musician himself, but for the longest time, he would listen to other artists and feel as if he knew them through their music, or at least wanted to understand why they wrote what they did. “I was a geek,” he said. “I would dive into that stuff and want to get into the mind of the artist ... and I was really impacted by that, you know? It’s basically why I decided to do what I do.” For him, music wasn’t just sounds coming out of a speaker – it was something a little more special than that. “At the end of the day, I want to have a good time, so I’ll try and create stuff on the fly – none of my shows are the same, especially when I’m touring,” he says. On the other side of the music, however, Dowler has a drive to create change. “It’s always kind of corny when you say I want to change the world for the better,’” he says. “I want to have a hit record as well, but at the end of the day I think I want to feel like I made a difference with what I decided to put my hands to, which is music.” He will be on stage this Nov. 15 at 8 p.m. and will share the evening with the Zachary Lucky Band. Cover charge is $15. Photo Supplied Luke Dowler “First and foremost, music played a huge role in shaping and defining certain moments of my life and it’s always been something that I’ve always wanted to create the opportunity to do for other people,” he said. “Music helped me get through situations, it gave me a safe place to even define who I was.” Grown up now, he wants to provide that safe place for other people, too. With a passion for not only music, but for talking about injustice in the world, he’s managed to reach people on a deeper level over his 10 years in the music industry. “I’ve written songs that have been used for anti-human-trafficking campaigns and songs that have been used for homeless shelter organizations, so for me, music is the king – inside that, it provides so much opportunity to just create, to be a voice for the voiceless,” he says. “But at the same time, let loose, have fun and rock out.” His music has been described as a lot of different genres; indie, rock, pop and soul among them. But Dowler is OK with having the freedom to play with that wide range of styles. “You can hear all sorts of different influences in there. I just kind of put it in a grab-bag and write a song,” he says. In the past, he’s had a taste of many styles. He started out in a ska band and he even had a brief stint in a rap/rock band, but now, one can pick out aspects of many genres in his music. “Whether it’s a Bob Dylan tune or whether it’s a Katie Perry song – there’s a wide gap there – but still, songs are kind of what have captured me,” he says. “It hasn’t been about style. It’s about what the song is talking about. The style is kind of just the clothing the song is dressed up in.” His upcoming performance at The Root: Community Emporium, he says, will probably be the “loudest acoustic concert you’ll go to.” World Wars The Lloydminster Regional Archives Oct. 9 - Nov. 29, 2014 780.875.9272 archives@lloydminster.info Remembering Lloydminster during WWI and WWII at home and abroad Lloydminster Regional Archives in partnership with the Lloydminster Cultural and Science Centre and Lashburn Centennial Museum A World of Knowledge in Every Bag… A Sustainable, Vibrant & Diversified Community with Opportunities for All SUBDIVISION AND DEVELOPMENT APPEAL BOARD SECRETARY Delivering Performance in Every Field The County of Vermilion River requires one (1) Secretary for the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board. The competition, put on by the Professional Photographers Of Canada (PPOC) for Saskatchewan and Manitoba, also honoured her with the Best Fashion Award for her image Red Green Fashion Fix and Best Figure Study Award for a photo called Fortitude. “It feels good,” she said of the honours. “I try to treat every session I go into as if it is meant for competition. I want to give my clients the best possible work that I can give them. So, really it’s just a representation of the work that I feel I do all the time.” Noyce also won Photographer of the Year back SUPPORT RV/Boat Storage 45kms South of Lloydminster on Hwy 17 (780) 871-0451 www.crossmanministries.com in 2012 and though she said it feels good to be recognized, she gives a great deal of credit to her employees down at Noyce Photography. Without their help, she feels she wouldn’t have the schedule space or resources to achieve such accomplishments. “I am proud of my staff because without such a solid staff and so much help, I wouldn’t have time to do any competitions or develop the work that we’ve been able to develop here,” she said. The awards seem even more impressive when one takes into account that Noyce is mostly selftaught, never having attended post-secondary for photography. She began as “the family photographer” doing personal work and learning through trial and error. During that time she worked as assistant manager at Real Canadian Superstore for 20 years, giving her a lot of customer service experience, until she left on maternity leave with her second daughter. It was then that she decided to start her own photography business. “It turns out you work a lot more when you run your own business, but we saw the opportunity and the demand was there and we made a business of it,” she said. Since becoming a member of PPOC, she has been granted many educational opportunities through the organization, beefing up on everything from the business side of things to enhancing her artistic capabilities. “So it’s been very instrumental in developing my skills,” she said. Her love for photography has led her to be able to make a living from the craft. She said she’s glad to be able to support herself and her children through a job that allows her to be creative and even though it’s a high pressure field that takes a lot of energy, she feels fortunate to be a part of it. But again, it really comes down to her clients and Photo Submitted Nicole Noyce those she works with. “I would really like to thank my clients and my staff,” she said. “Because without having clients that believe in me and staff that works with me, I would not be able to do the competitions and achieve what I have.” L A U N AN s Sale a m t s i r Ch 14112EA0 Tuesday, Novemb 9 am - 9 er 18, 2014 pm (C entral St andard T ime) Your annual eye exam is covered. Aside from the games themselves, the tournament raises money for families of those in need with auctions, donations and a few other affiliated events. “Usually we have six teams and then family and friends show up and we have a beer garden and stuff like that,” said Darris Gartner, tournament organizer. “106.1 The Goat, they always put it on air for us and they usually do a radio auction on air. Then we usually have the silent auction at the tournament, so people can come out and buy the items and that’s how we give them the money.” He said they also sell tickets for a steak night at the Canadian Brewhouse where donations are accepted as well. According to the Lloydminster Bobcats’ website, since it started, the tournament has raised an average of $30,000 each year for the selected recipient. “I never really put a limit on it, I never really have any expectations, I just tell everybody that I want to make sure I make them some money and hopefully it’s over $10,000,” said Gartner. Last year’s recipient was Evan Wolgien, who had money donated to help him travel back and forth to Vancouver for medical treatments. The Canucks’ website says “the recipient is selected based primarily on financial need, and the donation is made directly to the selected recipient.” Potential recipients can apply by Gartner at 780-870-0513 or darrisgartner@hotmail.com. We have logistic guys looking at the lots for potential assembly.” Radostits said that when he and his partner met with the RM of Wilton 3.5 years ago, there was only a small energy park in the RM. “Looking at the trends that were happening in the energy industry, we thought there was a large demand for another energy park,” he said. Radostits added that he continuously heard from energy companies about the reduced inventory of land to expand. “So we thought there was an opportunity for a park with lots of this size.” Further information or viewing can be provided by contacting Brandi (250) 571 - 9525 or Jenn (250) 320 - 1503. That’s the style of music Zachary Lucky plays. He’s a Winnipeg-born musician with many accolades and six albums under his belt. He’s a traveller, too; it comes with the territory. Talking on the phone, he had just driven back to Saskatoon from Winnipeg to sit on his couch for the first time in two and a half months. But even when he’s running out of steam, he loves it all the same. “I was saying to somebody the other day, even at the end of the day, when you’ve made 50 bucks and you’re tired and you’re sleeping on a hardwood floor, you’re still doing something that you love. And there’s nothing I’d rather be doing than being on the road with good people and going to new places and meeting new people. It’s a pretty wild trip.” His previous tour last fall was strictly a Canadian one, but on his current tour, he’s taken him and his band all around the world. “This tour is bigger in a broader sense. I had not either, until my grandma wrote a cookbook and included this recipe called carrots for freezing.’ I know a lot of my passion for cooking comes from my grandma. She is an extraordinary cook. I have had the privilege of watching her cook for years and learned many techniques. Grandma has been inspired from her Russian background and from her mother. Her many specialties include perogies, homemade French bread, borscht, blintzes, and lemon poppyseed loaf. Even today, it is not uncommon to call Grandma and she has just baked eight dozen cinnamon buns. Grandma said that if you have extra carrots from the garden, this is the perfect way to use them. This recipe is essentially slow cooking carrots in the oven. The carrots need to be sliced very thin. I used a food processer to slice them, but of course you can also do it by hand. Grandma said, “A lady that I had given this recipe to said these were so good they didn’t reach the freezer. They ate them all in two weeks.” I felt the same way when I took them out of the oven, they were just delicious. Thank you Grandma, for always inspiring me. I thank God for another beautiful day and enjoy the gift that Mother Nature has bestowed upon us overnight. I take my crazy little puppy out for his morning ritual and watch him romp in all the new snow, he loves this time, I think, as much as my daughter does. Our house is a tad on the chilly side this morning, so I turn on the fire place to help warm our main level, I find a cozy place to settle in to write this week’s column. As I write this, today is the Remembrance Day parade here in Cold Lake, as we have a rather large military base this will be a huge event in our ever expanding town. It’s a day filled with such deep emotion for so many, so I am grateful that they have chosen to move the entire ceremony to one location so that we may all gather together. I am so grateful for our Canadian military for protecting our country and doing their best to be an advocate for creating peace in our country. This time of year is a floodgate for me to be filled with appreciation. It is only seven weeks until Christmas and this is the time where we begin to think about which causes that we would like to donate to. I ask you take a moment to consider that these two subjects are on a parallel. We often take for granted that we live in a peaceful country and that we have a hot meal and shelter every night. For so many people in our country this is far from their norm. Many people suffer in silence around us – many are dealing with catastrophic circumstances that we could only imagine. Today, I ask that you take time to think about who may need a helping hand. Is it the man you see on the corner who asks for your spare change? Is it the family who looks like they struggle more than the rest of your neighbours? Is it the lady who comes to work every day with a smile on her face, and is always there to lend a hand and supportive ear? No one truly knows the dynamics of what is going on, but if we take a moment to simply listen and pay attention they may allow their need to be revealed. I’d like to point out one last item before I close this week’s column. Being connected and fully present need not only apply to people in need in your community. There are people in your life that need your love and support also. I encourage you today, while you are deciding who it is that you would like to help, also take a few minutes to reach out to those you love and share with them how much they mean to you. The power of care and connection is immense and may just be the thing that could save someone’s life. I found a beautiful quote from Maya Angelou that I felt was fitting to share with you all today: “If one has courage, nothing can dim the light which shines from within.” I am sending you all love and light today, as we all begin to reconnect for the greater good of our universe. 2101 - 50th Avenue, Lloydminster LLOYDMINSTER SOURCE I WWW.LLOYDMINSTERSOURCE.COM I Thursday, November 13, 2014 NEWS MANAGER’S SPECIAL EVENT 3 DAYS ONLY Thursday, Nov. 13 to Saturday, Nov. 15 Thursday, Nov. 13 to Saturday, Nov. 15 ALL KINGSDOWN & SERTA SLEEP SETS REDUCED! Lakeland may have a 2-6 record, but have lost four of those games by single digit points. Part of the process by Andrew Brethauer andrew@lloydminstersource.com Tom Groat isn’t panicking yet, but the plastic cover over the panic button might be lifted up by now after the Lakeland Rustlers men’s basketball team suffered two losses to NAIT over the weekend. Saturday night’s game was a Lakeland honest effort. A 78-72 final was another close loss for the Rustlers this season, and a wide improvement over the effort put in the night before where they gave up 111 points to the Ooks, and scored a season low 48. It was their fifth and sixth losses of the season, putting their record at 2-6 through the first eight games. But just because their record is nowhere near where they expected to be, doesn’t mean Groat or the Rustlers have lost hope on their season already. But they are running out of time to figure it out and get wins in the win column. “I still don’t think we have played our best game,” said Groat. “I know the record is deceiving, but it is a long season. It is 24 games and we are only eight games in. We’ll go back to the drawing board and try and put the X’s and O’s where they need to be.” Other than Fridays night’s one-sided loss, the Rustlers have actually played well against the top teams in the ACAC North Division. Of the six losses, only two were rather one sided. Concordia handed Lakeland two losses to start the season, the second being a 96-79 final, but that only came after the night before where Lakeland lost by just three points. Against Keyano the following weekend, the Rustlers earned their first victory with a 74-69 win, only to lose the next night by just four points, 71-67. A repeat happened a weekend later, as the Rustlers defeated Grande Prairie 77-65 on Friday before losing by just three, 84-81, the next night. That’s three losses by four points or less. Lakeland easily could have went into the weekend against NAIT as a 5-1 basketball team. Instead they entered 2-4 and added two more losses. It’s evident that frustration is on the faces of the Rustlers, even if Groat believes it is the wrong emotion to have considering how competitive the team has been in the majority of their losses this season. “You got to have the right emotion, frustration doesn’t help you get towards your end,” said Groat. “What you have to do is study and say, where do we have to pick up. You just work on those things and you continue, hopefully, improving. I’m seeing improvement. I think we’re going to be OK, regardless of the record.” Lakeland has three players scoring over 10 points a game, led by Josh Magpantay with 13 points a game, while Evan Halyk and Stephen Jones are averaging 11. With a lot of first and second year players, Lakeland is still an inexperienced squad, even with seven returning players from last year. Groat insists that better decision making and a stronger post presence will help turn things around, and it isn’t time yet to pull the plug on any system he is running. He was able to have 10 players contribute in Saturday night’s loss, so any changes he makes are simply just to make the Rustlers a better team and win games. Nothing drastic should be seen coming down the pipeline just yet. “We got things to work on, we’re young, it is a learning curve and we are going to get there,” said Groat. “It’s part of the process. I think we have been playing tough teams, and now we are going to play teams that can give us a great game, but I think we will have an opportunity to finish out the first half of the season on a 4-0 run.” Lakeland has a home-and-away with Augustana (1-5) this weekend, starting on the road Friday before an 8 p.m. home game on Saturday. LLOYDMINSTER SOURCE I WWW.LLOYDMINSTERSOURCE.COM I Thursday, November 13, 2014 SPORTS 33 Inside sports The last donations for Games Society by Andrew Brethauer andrew@lloydminstersource.com For over 30 years, the Lloydminster Games Society raised funds to help local athletic and cultural groups in the Border City, and has contributed to some of Lloydminster’s major construction projects for local sports. Through the sale of lottery tickets, the Games Society has put more than $300,000 into the community, either through donations to local athletes, sports groups or the building of sports and culture centres. But after handing out over $11,000 this year, the Games Society has ceased operations. “That’s a long time for any volunteer group to run,” said Raymond Bailey, director for the Games Society. “I guess you could say the society had run its course in terms of fundraising, so we made the decision to sell the lottery ticket booth to our manager.” The Games Society began in 1982 when Lloydminster hosted the Alberta Winter Games. In an effort to raise money for the games, the Games Society was allowed to sell lottery tickets, with proceeds going to athletic endeavours. It was so successful that the Games Society held their license to sell lottery tickets and continue to operate their booth in the LloydMall. Over the years, the Games Society has contribute to such things as Leisure Centre indoor swimming pool, the Vic Juba Community Theatre, the Servus Sports Centre and some also to the Lloydminster Cultural and Science Centre. They also donated to smaller groups such as dance groups, figuring skating clubs, and athletes going beyond the regional competitions to provincial and national competitions. Seeing these buildings proved to the Games Society that there was a need for this type of organization in Lloydminster, in order to help facilitate the need for a growing athletic and cultural society. “There wasn’t all that much money available for sporting groups or sporting competitions,” said Bailey. Photo Submitted Outgoing Lloydminster Games Society president Marlene Schonheiter presents a cheque for $5,000 to Raymond Bailey of the Lloydminster Regional Archives. Games Society gives last donations after more than 30 years of helping local sports and cultural projects “So we thought, there was a niche we could help fill.” Now the Games Society is seeing those niche areas being filled by other local groups. Four years ago, they sold off their ticket booth and finally distributed the rest of the money this year. It is one of the reasons, Bailey said, that the society ceased opera- www.webbsford.com 2014 Ford Expedition MAX Limited tions, because now there isn’t as much of a need for sports funding as there was 30 years ago. “Part of the reason for that is maybe because of the example we tried to set that the community needs funding for sport and cultural things,” said Bailey. “When we started making noise about that, I think other people, companies and individuals stepped up to the plate more.” The Games Society themselves have seen a drop in their own donations, due in large part to VLTs and other lottery centres lowering the amount of money they could draw in from their ticket sales. The society used to raise over $15,000 a year, but now have seen drops in their money raised to $5,000 a year. But despite their operation coming to an end, the Games Society has been a large part of Lloydminster’s athletic and cultural scene, and Bailey said, everyone involved is proud of what they have accomplished in the more than 30 years the Games Society was in operation. Not slowing down by Andrew Brethauer andrew@lloydminstersource.com Sarah St. Marie always wants to be faster. Since putting on her skates 11 years ago, it has been about shaving off every portion of a second she can. And for a speed skater, even the smallest millisecond can be the difference between first and last. She learned to skate on speedskates, following in her brother’s footsteps after watching him compete. While many children take their first steps on ice with hockey skates, St. Marie did it with the long blade and small rocker of a speed skate, and since then has been flying around tracks, setting personal bests and making personal gains. It’s as if nothing can slow her down. “It feels like gravity is pulling you and you are so fast,” said St. Marie. “I feel like I’m on top of the world and nothing can stop me.” Entering her 12th year as a member of the Lloydminster Border Blades, St. Marie had one goal - under 50 seconds in the 500-metre race. She has done it before, most recently in Calgary in January, when she not only finished with a personal best in her short race, but added three other best skates as well. Her time of 48.40 was the 19th fastest overall in the 500m race. So there is still lots the 17-year-old skater can continue to improve on. At the Border Blades first mini meet of the season, the goal was to keep under 50 seconds. In the first heat of the night, St. Marie raced Aaron Svendsen and Rachel Collins. St. Marie led from the beginning, and would race alone for the majority of the race after Svendsen and Collins crashed into the wall. There was nothing to slow her down or in her path, but her final time was slightly above what she wanted to accom- plish. A 51.48 on the Rusway Arena at the Servus Sports Centre. A hockey rink, converted each Thursday into a short track speed skating oval for the Border Blades. Times here are not as fast as they would be at a professional track, such as the one in Calgary, but it is the home of the Border Blades and that of St. Marie. As part of the Blades, St. Marie has competed as three Alberta Winter Games, skated at westerns and competed at nationals, earning five top 10 finishes in eight skates. With this being her final year with the Border Blades, St. Marie has collegiate aspirations, hoping to land a spot at the University of Calgary for short track speed skating, which would also give her a chance to get into major competitions and join the national team. It would be a big step in her speedskating career and a chance to improve on a large stage with a professional track. But for now, she will continue to use the Rusway rink as her facility, and do whatever she can to cut time off her races. “You can always improve on your technique and you are never as good as you can be,” said St. Marie. “It’s just critiquing everything you can, and looking at videos and seeing everywhere you can improve, even if it is something really small. A tenth of a second is what determines gold from silver a lot of the time.” The 50-second mark in the 500m is a threshold. According to St. Marie, it separates the good skates from the elite. At the competition in January when St. Marie skated her personal best, the winning race was five seconds faster. She will want to be there some day. “Once you hit that mark it’s a really big deal,” said St. Marie. “It takes the good skaters to the elite skaters.” LLOYDMINSTER SOURCE I WWW.LLOYDMINSTERSOURCE.COM I Thursday, November 13, 2014 SPORTS 35 How long is your hunting trip? 3 days 6 days Andrew Brethauer Photos However long it takes LloydMall 780-875-0203 11902 Railway Ave, North Battleford, SK (306) 446-3833 www.GoldEagleCasino.ca Play Responsibly 2013 The Lloydminster Drillers soccer club took part in the Lakewood indoor soccer tournament in Saskatoon last weekend, with 10 of their teams competing. Back in the game From CIS champion to Lakeland Rustler, Amber Irvine has found her passion for basketball again in the most unlikely place by Andrew Brethauer andrew@lloydminstersource.com Amber Irvine sits on the bench at tip off for every Lakeland Rustlers women’s basketball game. She watches the opening minutes of the game unfold, joins in the chant for defence and waits for her name to be called to enter the game. It’s a place she didn’t think she would be at – sitting on the bench. Not because she isn’t good enough to be a starting guard for Lakeland, but because Irvine thought she would never play competitive basketball again. And not the least bit at the collegiate level in Alberta. In 2010, Irvine graduated from East Elgin Secondary School in Alymer, Ont. and enrolled at the University of Windsor in the human kinetics program. She joined the University of Windsor Lancers women’s basketball team in her freshmen year. It was the best season any freshman could ask for, as the Lancers rolled to a 34-2 record, and more importantly, won the Bronze Baby trophy as the best basketball team in the country. Irvine appeared in 10 games for the Lancers, all in the second half of the season. As a freshman, her minutes were low, the most being 14 against Waterloo, where she scored a seasonhigh five points. That was to be expected for a first-year player. But she was still part of a championship team, the No. 1 ranked team in the country. It was the Lancers first CIS championship in women’s basketball. They have since won three more in a row and are the current defending champions. But Irvine only has her name on one of them. Her freshman season. The only season she played for the Lancers. After that season, she left basketball. “It was so much, it was so intense,” said Irvine. “I was 19 going in and as a 19-year-old, it was a lot to handle. The university had such a high-calibre team and I just couldn’t balance school, social life and basketball. I wasn’t mentally ready to go into that.” Irvine admits that at Windsor, basketball was the priority. School came second and her personal life was a distant third, or non-existent. It was a struggle to find balance for all three, so after the 2011 season Irvine left the Lancers to focus on her education and finish her degree in four years. The Lancers would go on to win three more titles. Not thinking she would play basketball again, Irvine got a call from Rustlers head coach Chris King. At 23 years old, Irvine didn’t know if she wanted to play basketball again, specifically at the college level. But in the summer she signed with the Rustlers and this fall, put on a basketball jersey for a competitive game for the first time since the 2011 CIS championship game. And she is in a similar spot as she was with the Lancers, as Irvine is still coming off the bench. Only this time, she is typically the first player to substitute into the game – the Rustlers sixth player. It’s a role she is questioned about, as her stats suggest she is a capable starter, and her university level game would also lend many to believe she should be on the court from the start. But for Irvine, starting from the bench doesn’t bother her. “It is just such a flow into the game,” said Irvine. “We have a deep bench. The first unit is just as strong as the first. Everyone competes at practice. Whatever you can do to help the team. It doesn’t bother me.” From the bench, Irvine is the Rustlers second-leading scorer with 91 points, 10 points less than starter and fourth-year Rustler Cameo McKerlie. She averages 13 points a game and shoots 46 per cent from the field. After competing at the university level that was built on structured set plays, Irvine said she enjoys the run-and-gun style of college basketball. It better suits her style of slash-run basketball. As a rookie for the Rustlers, she brings a veteran presence. And while the statistics say she should be on the court at tip off, for now Lakeland is fine leaving her where she is.” “Amber has the potential to be a game changer for us,” said Chris King. “She is great for us off the bench because she is so dynamic. She does a great job for us and I like her in that role right now.” It’s been a long road back to the court for Irvine, who at this point isn’t looking far into the future beyond this season. As a 23-year-old, she has matured enough to balance the three aspects of her life. Basketball is no longer the only priority. “Now I am older, much older,” said Irvine. “I’ve grown up so much since then that now it is doable. It is easy for me.” Four months ago she never would have told you she would be in Lloydminster playing basketball. But Irvine is back on the court, wearing the green and gold, helping to lead the Rustlers to a 7-1 start and a No. 9 national rank. She is a rookie, but a leader, and more importantly, her passion for basketball has returned. Thank you to the following sponsors for their generous support at our highland dance competition held October 19, 2014 And a BIG THANK YOU to all of our volunteers, judges and dancers who made the competition a great success! In a new town Scott Hartnell lands in Columbus, along with his foundation, looking forward to the next chapter in his hockey career by Andrew Brethauer andrew@lloydminstersource.com In June, Scott Hartnell walked into classrooms throughout Lloydminster. In hand was a copy of his new children’s book, Hartnelldown, the latest endeavour for the National Hockey League player’s charitable foundation. He sat in front of the children and read the book aloud, turning the book after every page to show the illustrations. The pictures were what you would expect from a book called Hartnelldown. The NHLer’s signature long red hair, depictions of hockey from a young age up to the NHL, and Scott Hartnell, through many different means, somehow ending up on the ice, including the front cover, with Hartnell sitting on the Philadelphia Flyers logo with his No. 19 Flyers jersey on. But what many didn’t know is that while Hartnell read his book for the first time to the children of Lloydminster, the book, was already out of date. “I obviously didn’t want to let the cat out of the bag,” said Hartnell. “That morning I got a call from my agent. A lot of things going in my mind.” On that day in June, Scott Hartnell became a member of the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Lloydminster native was dealt to the Blue Jackets for R.J. Umberger and a fourth-round draft pick. He was coming off a season where he scored 20 goals and 52 points in 78 games, but the Flyers felt they needed a change, so they sent Hartnell to Columbus. So far it has worked out well statistically for Hartnell who had five goals and 14 points through the first 14 games of the season. Columbus, however, sits in the bottom of the Metropolitan Division, while his old team, Philadelphia, is in the top half. It was a shock for many to hear that Hartnell had been traded. He was a committed community member in Philadelphia, with proceeds from his Hartnelldown Foundation going back into the local community. With a rabid fan base, who gave generously to his foundation, it was tough for Hartnell to leave a city he had called home since 2007 and start fresh in Columbus. “I have a lot of special memories there,” said Hartnell. “But sometimes things happen for a reason. I’ve come here (Columbus) and had nothing but positive experiences. The guys are great and I’m just looking to move on, being a hockey professional as a Blue Jacket.” Now Hartnelldown is in a new town, and despite the Blue Jackets struggles to open the season, Hartnell said he looks forward to the challenge on the ice, as well as to see how big his foundation can became now moving forward into a new city. Already there are two t-shirts on the Hartnelldown website that feature Columbus Blue Jackets’ colours. But while Columbus is a new city, it has some old feelings. Hartnell started his career with the Nashville Predators before being traded to Philadelphia. Like Nashville, Columbus is a smaller hockey market, as the team has only made qualified twice for the playoffs since their inception into the league back in 2000. So media coverage is small, a few cameras in the locker room after practice, but nothing like what was in Philadelphia for one of the league’s most historic teams. Having played 13 seasons in the NHL prior to this year, Hartnell brings a wealth of experience to the Blue Jackets, as he is one of the oldest players in the lineup every night at 32 years old. With such a young core of players who had a taste of playoffs last season, Hartnell believes this a team that isn’t satisfied with what they accomplished last year, and will want to keep building towards a longer playoff run. “We believe in the room that we are right there,” said Hartnell. “They were right there, almost beating Pittsburgh last year, so it’s exciting to be a part of a young group like that who believes in themselves. To be a veteran guy and be a part of that, hopefully I can contribute and play hard and play well and help the team win.” Contact Andrew to cover your Local Sports Events to be featured in the... After a gruelling 20-week regular season from which the Saskatchewan Roughriders emerged at 10-8, the 2014 Canadian Football League playoffs are now at hand. The bar has been raised so high in Saskatchewan for the past decade that, to me, the regular season has become somewhat tedious. As far back as June we found ourselves daydreaming about in the West,” said a content Rider coach Corey Chamblin after the game. “For us, we’ve played Edmonton the most the past few weeks and there are some known strengths and weaknesses in the opponent. In terms of prep, it’s good to know the opponent you’re playing. There are some base things to study from this game and they put their best foot forward to win this game.” Indeed it was impressive how hard Edmonton tried to win Saturday night, given the fact they really had nothing to play for. It’s true they had the ability to affect who they’d play in the WSF, but that seemed to be the last thing on their mind. Meanwhile, the Riders coaches were tearing their hair out doing advance scouting last week for a possibility of four opponents in the first round of the playoffs: Edmonton, Hamilton, Montreal or Toronto. Now they know it’s the Eskimos and getting past them won’t be an easy task. Edmonton’s 12-6 record represents the biggest single-season turnaround in franchise history after going 4-14 last year. They are also No. 1 on offense and No. 2 on defense going into the playoffs. How can you be better than that? The thing you’ll be hearing about the most this week is the quarterbacks. Top pivots Mike Reilly and Darian Durant were held out of the final regular season game by the Eskimos and Riders respectively, and we’re told both were due to injury. Let the gamesmanship begin. “Our quarterback was really hurt,” Chamblin said with a smile. “Regarding Mike Reilly, I think that’s just a ruse. It Starting from price for 2014 Ram 1500 Laramie doesn’t matter who their Limited Quad Cab w/ EcoDiesel shown: $56,745. quarterback will be. We’ll have to be ready to play.” Of course, Darian Durant hasn’t played since Sept. 7 due to an elbow injury and he’s slowly been worked into practice the past couple of weeks. •• In Durant’s absence the past three weeks, 41-year old veteran Kerry Joseph has filled in. “Kerry did a good job (Saturday night),” % Chamblin continued. Whether it’s No. 4 or No. ± 5 going in the playoffs, or both, we’ll be ready.” ¥ The question is; which one will it be? Wouldn’t the Eskimos like to know. Now we know, and it’s infinitely thrilling that the time is now. Saskatchewan’s 24-17 home win over Edmonton this past frigid Saturday night accomplished a lot of things: it snapped a five game losing skid, showed the team they can win without Darian Durant, assured an above .500 record and guaranteed the Riders would stay in the West Division for the postseason rather than crossover into the East. It sets up a meeting between the Riders and Eskimos Sunday at Commonwealth Stadium in the Western Semifinal (3:30 pm Sask time, TSN, 620 CKRM). “Whether it was East or West, the team was prepared to go either, but it’s always nice to stay GET UP TO $10,000 IN TOTAL DISCOUNTS 40 up to § mpg hwy 2014 ram 1500 14112UC0 CANADA’S MOST FUEL-EFFICIENT TRUCK EVER 2014 RAM 1500 QUAD CAB SXT 4X4 27,498 $ PURCHASE PRICE INCLUDES $8,500 CONSUMER CASH,* $1,500 LOYALTY/ CONQUEST BONUS CASH » AND FREIGHT. 155 ‡ 3.99 CANADA’S BEST-SELLING, LONGEST-LASTING DIESEL PICKUP great offers on A 2014 ram heavy duty 30,000 LB ® LLOYDMINSTER SOURCE I WWW.LLOYDMINSTERSOURCE.COM I Thursday, November 13, 2014 AGRICULTURE 41 Canada is top agriculture trader Canada is the world’s top agriculture trader when compared to all other countries on a per capita basis, according to Farm Credit Canada’s (FCC) annual report on global trade. “When viewing Canada’s agriculture trade numbers through the lens of this country’s population, a clear picture emerges,” said J.P. Gervais, FCC’s chief agricultural economist in a news release. “It shows the agriculture sector is more important to Canada than all other countries, including the United States, Australia and the European Union.” “This is significant because it points to strong opportunities and a bright future for Canadian agriculture,” said Gervais, in releasing the FCC Ag Economics: A 2014 Look at Global Trade report. The report takes the combined value of all agriculture exports and imports from each of the major agriculture trading countries and divides that number by each country’s respective population. In 2013, the value of Canada’s agriculture imports and exports was more than US$2,100 per person, followed by Australia at about US$1,900 per person. While China and India don’t rank high on the per capita agriculture trade spectrum, the significance of these emerging economies – with huge and growing populations – should not be ignored, Gervais cautioned. “The combination of rising household incomes and population growth in India and China present major market opportunities for Canadian exports of beef, pork and pulse crops,” Gervais said. “Canada appears well positioned as an important agriculture trader in the world and the expansion of trade relations will only help to sustain and build on that.” The report shows Canada as the fifth largest agriculture exporter in the world – behind the European Union, United States, Brazil and China – and the sixth largest agriculture importer. Canada’s imports are mainly driven by relatively high household incomes and a year-round demand for fresh fruits and vegetables, which is partly met by foreign exporters. “This report confirms that agriculture is and will continue to be a major contributor to Canada’s growth and prosperity,” Gervais said. It started Friday morning with 300-plus head of cattle deciding to move themselves to the winter feeding grounds a few days ahead of schedule. The old matriarch of the herd apparently felt the snow and cold weather coming in, so took the opportunity of a temporarily opened gate to get settled in for the cold months ahead. Late that same night, the water pressure on the home place dropped significantly. This system is just under a third of a mile of buried line radiating out from a central bored well. It services two homes, an indoor riding arena and three separate corrals. The only good thing about the problem was that we now winter the aforementioned cattle on land a mile away with its own well FOR SALE Located in Sun Land Springs Village, Mesa, Arizona Located in a gated community, this 1,738 sq. ft. furnished home is on a golf course, three bedroom open plan, hot tub, oversized garage, comes with golf cart. $ 365,000 U.S. Please call Reid for more information 306-821-0530 and water system, so at least we didn’t have that to also worry about. We hate to admit it, but my wife and I are both old enough to remember hauling water and snow into our parents’ houses for all domestic needs, so despite the inconvenience we were able to switch to plan B without too much fuss. There isn’t an outhouse on the place though, so that part of a daily routine took a little bit more effort with two litres of water on standby to make the toilet flush. If you live in the country and you have a problem with water or sewer, there isn’t the convenience of calling in a municipal crew to fix it. Late fall and early winter is a very busy time of year for backhoe operators, with a hundred last-minute projects that have to get completed before freeze up. Fortunately, in a rural community everyone knows each other, and most people will make a special effort to help in situations like this. So, Sunday afternoon one drove into the yard after wrapping up another job that morning and dug up the offending leaking fitting for us to replace. Just like still happens today with our Newfoundland friends, my great grandfather Archibald moved west from Truro, N.S. to be with his daughter and her husband once they had established their homestead in 1905, on the farm that three generations of our family still live on. By all accounts, he was a master blacksmith and even though he was getting on in years, was often called upon by neighbours to repair specialized equipment or shoe horses with unique hoof issues. As an apprentice back East, he spent much of the first year just learning to properly bank a fire in the forge, how to make steel respond to hammer and heat, then finally was tasked with making his own tools. Soon the knowledge of what his hands, tools and determination could do supported both him and his family. This was not a dissimilar experience for most settlers, particularly those who chose the independence of carving out a new life in the Midwest. These days, if the high-speed Internet or satellite television goes down, we consider it a great inconvenience. Our society expects, even demands, seven days a week response to its perceived needs and I acknowledge I am no better than anyone else in this regard. I wonder what Grandfather Archibald would have to say about that. His response to a problem was to fill a pipe with tobacco, sit on big poplar log borrowed from the wood pile, and think it through before taking a course of action. I wonder if I turned off the cellphone, popped several pieces of gum in my mouth, and sat on the front deck for a few minutes, would that do the trick? The French had tried on previous occasions to take Vimy but failed, with the inconceivable loss of over 150,000 men. The Canadians had 10,000 casualties that day. Monty explains Leslie’s experience during the day of battle, “Many soldiers realized that they had been part of something truly great. Leslie looked around for a souvenir on the ridge, which was completely devoid of structures or vegetation due to shell fire but he did find a half buried oak tree. He gathered up a handful of acorns nearby to bring home.” GREEN FILE by Mark Cullen www.markcullen.com This is Veterans’ Week and it seems to me a good idea to hear a few good stories that illuminate the meaning of this special time of year. I have one such story. It is a gardening story and a war story, but it is mostly a character story that truly needs to be told. I hope that you agree. Pioneer in Agincourt Let me introduce you to Monty McDonald, a Torontonian who grew up in Agincourt in the northeast corner of the city, at a time when the landscape was dominated by fields of corn and livestock. In the early 50s, his father was a high school shop teacher at Agincourt C.I. Monty begins this story, “We were out for a family drive and my dad noticed the Vimy Oaks Fruit and Vegetables’ sign on Kennedy Road, just north of Finch. We wheeled in and the owner, Leslie Miller, RealtyLLTD.. was on hand, a farmer in his 60s with a lot of 780.875.9449 #101 5101 - 48 Street Lloydminster, AB common interests with WEEKLY FEATURE LISTING my father.” Leslie Miller had served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the battle of Vimy Ridge on April 9, 1917. The ridge was captured $319,900 that day and (as many 5120 23A Street, Lloydminster, AB MLS# 52526 www.macsrealty.ca know) Canada became TD Education Cut Short When Mr. Miller came back to Canada, he enrolled at the University of Toronto with a major in modern languages (he spoke fluent Spanish, German and French) but his formal education was cut short when he contracted scarlet fever. The cure at that time was plenty of bed rest and fresh air for five years. His father, taking pity on his son, gave him a 20-acre section of the family farm on Kennedy Road. With the help of his father and brother, Leslie built his own house and barn and transformed the property into a piece of paradise.’ He sectioned off parts of his farm into an orchard, beehives, market gardens, and hay and alfalfa fields. The lot included a section of mature hardwood bush and it was here that he planted his Vimy oaks. Vimy Oaks Alive Today By some miracle the oaks remain standing today, surrounded by urban development on the site of the Scarborough Chinese Baptist Church. I visited them the other day and they are so big that I can barely touch my fingers when I wrap my arms around them at chest height. They have nearly a two-metre girth. It is remarkable that these oaks still stand as a reminder of the Vimy experience for Canadians almost 100 years ago. It is equally remarkable that Mr. Miller brought these acorns home and grew them on the Toronto farm in the first place. As Monty told me this story, it was dawning on me that Leslie Miller was indeed a renaissance man. When I gazed at a hand-rendered sketch of the farm and garden I noted that an area had been cordoned off as a garden plot for new Canadians.’ “What is this all about?” I asked Toronto’s First Community Garden “Well,” replied Monty, who spent seven years working for Mr. Miller on his farm while in his teens, “during the early 50s many immigrants from Europe were moving into new subdivisions in the Agincourt area. Leslie had See “Green File,” Page 46 (306) 821-0530 Estates 3 HOUSES READY FOR IMMEDIATE POSSESSION Lot 14 Lot 41 • 3 bedrooms on main floor • Ensuite on master bedroom • Open floor plan 479,000 Lot 42* JUST NEEDS YOUR FINISHING TOUCH • Main floor laundry • 2 bedrooms main floor • Open floor plan 475,000 $ Lot 68 *Investor's Guarantee* Pride of Ownership shows in this totally renovated six bedroom home. He would spot them while delivering vegetables in his neighbourhood and invite them to come to his farm.” Many of the new immigrants to Toronto had very little money, so Leslie offered the opportunity to grow food on his farm on a designated plot in return for helping with his fruit and vegetable crops. It is quite possible that this was the first community garden in Toronto. I contacted my friend Nick Saul, the president of Canadian Food Centres Canada, to see if he knew of any community gardens that were older. He performed an informal survey of all of his peers in the community garden network and concluded that indeed the Vimy Oaks garden could well be the oldest one in the area. Remarkable Leslie Remarkable would be one word to describe Leslie Miller. We have all heard the stories of the First World War where German soldiers sang Christmas songs from their trenches which were returned in kind by the Allies from their opposing trenches. Evidently, Sgt. Miller interpreted the lyrics of the German songs for his English speaking brethren. It is remarkable to think that one individual would sacrifice 3.5 years of his life to fight in France for his country, return home to build one of the earliest forms of intensive farming, share his knowledge with a variety of kids from the neighbourhood, become a passionate birder, amateur arborist, bee keeper, orchardist, maple sugar maker, food retailer and classical music aficionado. Generous would be another word that I use to describe him. He was a natural teacher who took time from his obviously busy schedule to explain how things worked to many young people. He had no children of his own. Monty MacDonald has very fond memories of Leslie Miller. After Monty lost his own father when he was 16, Mr. Miller became his de facto’ Photo Supplied A Vimy oak dad and you could say that the rest is history. But not so fast. If Monty has his way, history will still be in the making come April 9, 2017, when the anniversary of the Vimy battle occurs on the ridge itself. He plans to be there on that day, with 100 young English Oak trees in hand. His plan is to plant them where Canadian soldiers trod exactly 100 years to the day. In the meantime, he is attempting to protect the existing Vimy Oaks in Agincourt by obtaining an official heritage designation for the bunch of them. Who would argue that that is a bad idea? A Wealthy Man It is interesting, I think, how we measure wealth in our society. For the most part the word is associated with money and all of the good things’ that one can acquire with it. Seldom do most of us take the time to contemplate the real meaning of the word. Leslie Miller was one wealthy guy. He had the good fortune to have escaped serious harm while at war in Europe. Plus, he had friends, good health, a farm and the power to influence a generation of kids who did not have to go to war in order to preserve peace or their freedom. That he died penniless at the age of 90 is an entirely different matter. Mark Cullen appears on Canada AM every Wednesday morning at 8:40. He is spokesperson for Home Hardware Lawn and Garden. By 2016, some moderation is expected. “The trend for housing starts has been up in recent months, particularly in multi-unit structures. The Allied soldiers were being evacuated to the British destroyers and other large ships, under the code name Operation Dynamo, also known as the Miracle of Dunkirk. My father was one of the 338,226 soldiers who managed to board one of the 800 boats, which brought the men back to England during the evacuation. He never really spoke about any of the battle details, but we always had a large book on the bookshelf, which detailed many of the battles, both with stories and pictures, perhaps his way of telling us to find out for ourselves. We did often hear about funny events during his time in the army. One of the stories around the supper table we would hear my father talk about was how happy the men were to be back on British soil, they all jumped off the boat into the water but they didn’t realize the water was full of oil and they all came up black. Nevertheless happy to have survived the Battle of Dunkirk. When my father first joined the Allied Forces in England he went to the famous tailors of Savile Row in central London to have his uniform custom made, for this he took quite the dressing down from his major. It seems to me a good deal of my father’s involvement during the war has been a guarded secret. But we did hear a few of the funny stories from time to time. One of my father’s duties was a dispatch rider on a British BSA motorcycle, the bike the Royal Enfield was modelled after. During this time he met my mother, a young wartime nurse. They were married in 1942. He occasionally complained about being cold on the bike, he thought she would knit him a sweater, instead she knitted him a single sock with a sack – needless to say she didn’t want him to be cold and at 84 years of age, she still told that story bringing much laughter to the table.
