Scientific Program Chair J. Michael Bostwick, MD, FAPM, working with a talented Annual Meeting Committee, has labored for the last year to realize Dr. Worley’s vision. It was Ralph Waldo Emerson who said, “a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.” We intend for the meeting to celebrate the psychosomatic medicine psychiatrist’s artistry. The PM psychiatrist brings to the consultation a multitude of tools, including careful attention to the patient’s narrative, innovative application of the latest scientific findings, and adaptation of accepted psychosomatic principles to the particular challenges each new patient offers us. Here’s just a sample of the smorgasbord APM will be serving up November 12-15: • An all-day preconference “Updates in Psychosomatic Medicine” course, featuring 13 speakers providing psychosomatic medicine essentials; and four skills-based courses running concurrently • The Presidential Symposium, “How Relevant is our Research and Evidence Base to Actual Patient Care?”, featuring provocative challenges to the status quo from editor William Lanier Jr., MD; clinical researcher Mark Zimmerman, MD; and psychologist Heidi Hjelmeland, PhD • Plenary Session: “The Human Side of Healthcare: Medicine as Stories, Stories as Medicine”, starring Louise Aronson, MD, MFA, a geriatrician, narrative medicine expert and author of A History of The Present Illness • 150+ scientific posters; 42 oral papers; 44 symposia and workshops • The debut of a 3-hour “Research for Researchers” workshop specifically designed to nurture the aspirations of mid-level and senior psychosomatic investigators • Mercy Killers, a gut-wrenching one-man play exploring the limits of the US health care system, performed by writer/actor Mike Milligan, with James Rundell, MD, FAPM, as discussant • Myriad social events to promote networking opportunities for both experienced and first-time meeting attendees • Up to 29.5 hours of CME credit that can be earned over the four days of the meeting. With hundreds of abstract submissions, the competition for a place on the program was intense. We have selected the very best that will offer you a wealth of ideas and a cornucopia of cuttingedge research in venues ranging from plenaries and a poster session, to workshops, symposia, and a concurrent paper session. We look forward to engaging with you in this compelling and mind-expanding program, the pinnacle of APM’s year, a testimony to the vitality of our organization and its importance in our professional lives. 2014 Annual Meeting Committee APM Membership . . inside bc Exhibitors . . . . . . . . back cover Join Us Next Year! . . back cover J. This organization is called the Foundation of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine (fAPM). 100% Campaign Join us as we kick off our 100% Campaign! ALL contributions, regardless of size, will help us achieve our commitment to future leaders in our field and ensure our continued impact as we move the cause of integrated care forward. 100% participation sends a strong message about our collective commitment to our mission, enabling us to solicit larger grants from individuals and institutions that have interest in our work. And your gift is tax-deductible! Educational Mission The Foundation of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine supports the Academy’s commitment to: •Fostering ongoing career development and recognizing significant contributions to the field, through endowed funds like the Lipsitt Award •Developing leaders in Psychosomatic Medicine, by supporting programs like the Webb Fellowship, which provides younger members with mentorship and opportunities for leadership • Supporting the academic growth and development of trainees through programs like the Trainee Travel awards, which provide funding for selected trainees to attend the annual meeting Donations Both the Academy and the Foundation thank you for your generous contribution and support. A “financial interest” may include, but is not limited to: being an employee and/or being a shareholder in the organization; being on retainer with the organization; or having research or honoraria paid by the organization. An “affiliation” may include holding a position on an advisory committee, speakers’ bureau or some other role or benefit to a supporting organization. APM administers a process by which potential conflicts are identified and resolved prior to the educational activity. Furthermore, the audience of each session must be informed of the presenters’ or program planners’ affiliations with every commercial interest by acknowledging such in the printed program and orally or visually (incorporated into slide presentation) at the start of a session. APM only identifies active disclosure information, meaning that the absence of a speaker from this list indicates that neither they nor an immediate member of their family have any relationship to disclose.
