This question is not as simple, especially as teenagers associate and build relationships with different people for a variety of reasons. As the school year slowly draws to a close there have been a number of things which I have reflected upon recently. One of these has been student behaviour, especially shared behaviours between two or more students. Parents often raise in conversation with me the difficulties they experience in raising a teenage son or daughter. This can at times be a challenge I’m sure, especially as most people reading this article would have themself experienced the emotional rollercoaster of teenage-hood. I find it particularly interesting when listening to these parents that their primary concern isn’t usually about their child’s own behaviours, but rather, the behaviours of the other teenagers their child associates with. In my position as Deputy Principal, I can at times share similar concerns with these parents about a child’s peer group, as I’ve seen certain students led astray and struggle with personal choices when influenced by their peers. However, at least in my time at Faith, there has undoubtedly been more instances where I’ve seen a child’s peer group positively influence them, helping to shape a student’s decision making in the right direction. When I share this with a concerned parent they’re generally pleased to hear this. Often they question how they can ensure their child has a peer group which I remember one parent distinctly asking what the key difference is between a positive peer group and a negative one? Again, this is difficult to pinpoint, especially when group dynamics play such a pivotal role. However, the key’ difference I believe is that a positive peer group knows not only how to give advice, but equally, when not to give advice. I believe every peer group has the potential’ to be good at giving advice to their mates. However, the best group of friends are often the ones which don’t try to pretend to have all the answers, knowing when to tell a friend in need if and when they should go and speak with someone better informed (i.e. a parent, teacher, counsellor, doctor etc.). So, to the concerned parent, I stress the importance of building an open relationship with their teenage son or daughter, one in which they feel comfortable to speak freely with them when in need. Of course, I’d encourage them to have similar relationships with their peers. In saying this, I would also recommend spending time ensuring their child has the ability to recognise when they’re having difficulties and know that it’s ok to say that they need help. Sure, a friend or their peer group may in fact be the best person/ group in helping them to address a particular issue or concern, so to the zealous parent, I’d say don’t fret over this. However, what you can do is ensure they’re as well equipped when facing challenges and feel safe when asking for help. The ingredients for every peer group forms a recipe which is unique to that group and its original ingredients (i.e. the people and their personalities, values, motivations etc.). For a parent, especially one who is concerned about their child’s peer group, it can be difficult to change the recipe as a whole; however, what they do and have control of is their ability to influence one of the most important ingredients, their child. So to these parents, I stress the need to ensure that their ingredient’ is as ripe and robust as possible, knows who they are and sometimes what they are not, as well as what they’re capable and in control of. Enews Many students at Faith have extraordinary peer groups, where each student looks out for one another. Sure, sometimes a friend might be too knowledgeable’ for their own good, where it’d best if they simply said nothing at all – or at least directed them to someone better skilled. However, by and large, the majority of Faith students are incredible ingredients’ (young people), who obviously come from great homes and have experienced many positive influences. These combine on a daily basis to create the recipe which is Faith, which is generally rich and nourishing (positive and supportive) for all our students. Kind Regards Maria Turner Librarian Home E news Faith Lutheran College forgiveness, and evil with good. Colossians 2:23 tells us that that such pure self-denial results in false humility and has no value in overcoming evil. Overcome Evil with Good So rather than simply resist evil, we are encouraged to take aim at evil and attack it with good. Sometimes our efforts to do good backfire and we’ll fail but the grace of God means that we can carry on in the knowledge that we are fully forgiven and that God himself will ultimately overcome evil with good! I’m generally not a fan of the Today’ show host, Karl Stefanovic. On the odd occasions where I do get to watch breakfast TV, I get annoyed by his bad puns and switch to ABC. But recently he has won the respect of rafts of Australians (me included) for a pretty unhygienic social experiment’. Alarmed by the constant criticism and waves of fashion advice his female colleagues face every day, Karl decided to wear the same suit two days in a row! Nobody noticed. So he wore the suit for the rest of the week. Still no reaction from the any of the 300,000 viewers who watch Today on an average morning including the hypercritical cyber fashion police’ who badger the women on the show. While his co-host Lisa Wilkinson would receive daily feedback on her outfits such as: “Who the heck is Lisa’s stylist?” or “Today’s outfit is particularly jarring and awful. Get some style”, Karl wore the same suit for a whole year and nobody noticed! His cheap Burberry knock off suit went by the wayside, while people were crucifying his colleagues for their fashion sense! What I find so great about this social experiment’ is it’s active stance. Rather than pontificate about sexism, Stafanovic highlighted the hypocrisy of his colleagues’ critics with one very public joke! Rather than respond in anger or with equally snide criticism he showed us the log in our eyes with humour and creativity. Rather than be overcome by evil, Karl overcame evil with good. Romans 12:21 tells us to do likewise: Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.’ Throughout Jesus life he was continually harassed by the religious fashion police known as the Pharisees. They accused him of being a drunk when he celebrated with people, they got upset when Jesus forgave peoples sins, and when he healed people they got upset that he did it on the wrong day! But rather than allow evil to overcome him, Jesus overcame evil with good. He loved, taught and inspired people consistently. On the cross when it seemed like evil had truly overcome good and Jesus himself had been defeated he rose triumphantly from the grave! As we approach Christmas, we remember that God’s rescue plan took time and effort, and for a period it seemed like evil was allowed to reign supreme, but ultimately evil was overcome with good in the most glorious way. Christians sometimes perceive themselves as the morality’ police. We think that our best response is with passive resistance and moral outrage. Our lists of thou shalt nots’ slowly pile up so that we’re so pre-occupied with not doing what we shouldn’t do that we don’t have time and energy to actively overcome fear with love, intolerance with patience, malice with Yours in Faith David Browne Pastoral Care Worker Home E news Faith Lutheran College Novelty Swim Carnival As part of the end of year program, students will be participating in a novelty swim carnival for half a day on Tuesday 2 December.
