Welcome to Nanyang
Technological University (NTU)
and congratulations on your
success in your academic
journey so far.
A MESSAGE
FROM NTU PRESIDENT
PROFESSOR BERTIL ANDERSSON
The next step in your life is an important one as it lays the blueprint for
your future. Your university years will be the most rewarding time of
your life as it prepares you for your transformation from a student to a
young working professional.
At NTU, we believe career planning starts from day one as you
discover your strengths, realise your passions and draft your roadmap
for the future. We have recently set up the Margaret Lien Centre for
Professional Success, which will assist you over your three to four
years of studies to plan what career suits you and land that dream job.
NTU graduates are highly sought after in the job market. Two
in three of our graduates have a j ob offer before graduation
– many receive multiple job offers – and it’s not uncommon
for our students to have secured jobs as early as during
their internships.
At NTU, you will be taught and mentored by professors who are
leading lights in their fields, such as Prof Vijay Sethi who was named
the World’s Best Business Professor by The Economist in 2013.
Besides stellar faculty, you will be in good company with other bright
young minds. NTU has seen an 83% increase in top A-Level students
enrolling in 2014 compared to 2011. The university is where you build
your network and social connections for the future so get off to a flying
start at NTU.
Globally, NTU has an excellent network of top overseas universities
and industry partners. This means our undergraduates will have
opportunities for various academic and research activities with the
likes of Imperial College London, Rolls-Royce, Lockheed Martin,
BMW and more.
We believe in a global education and eight in 10 of our undergraduates
will go overseas at least once during their studies. Having been in
leadership positions in different parts of the world myself, I firmly
believe in the advantages of developing multicultural intelligence.
On our campus, you will also be immersed in an internationally vibrant
environment with more than 100 nationalities on our lush varsity
grounds. Stay in a hall of residence on our beautiful campus, named
one of the Top 15 Most Beautiful Campuses in the world by Travel +
Leisure magazine.
We recently welcomed the first batch of students to our two new
Pioneer and Crescent Halls, which will be home to 1,250 students.
Within a green oasis of tree-lined boardwalks, sky terraces and a
natural pond, you will experience new ways of living, learning and
leisure.
Also awaiting you is the brand new learning hub where you can mix,
and exchange ideas with friends from other disciplines and schools.
56 smart classrooms, a lecture theatre, library, and student pods can
be used for group discussions, club or society meetings and so on.
Among other modern academic and recreational facilities coming your
way is the lifestyle hub conveniently located near the main Lee Wee
Nam Library. Walk into city life on campus and be spoilt for choice at
new food and retail outlets as well as more spaces to mingle. This will
be ready in your freshman year.
In this melting pot of international talents, iconic buildings, luxuriant
greenery and top-notch facilities, I am confident you will have a fulfilling
time at NTU, internationally recognised as a fast-rising university.
Don’t just take my word for it. The facts speak for themselves.
NTU is ranked No. 1 in the world amongst young universities below 50
years old. There are 16,000 such young universities in the world, out
of a grand total of 20,000 universities.
Even among the centuries-old universities, NTU is up there amongst
the world’s Top 30s as we are ranked 39th in Quacquarelli Symonds
(QS) World University Rankings 2014. In Asia, we are placed at No. 7.
You can’t go wrong with a university on a rapid rise. Seeing is believing
so see you around at NTU soon.

NTU EDUCATION:
FROM FRESHMAN TO
GLOBAL LEADER
How ARE students prepared for A global career?
Students today need to adapt to a rapidly changing global landscape
that requires more than just professional knowledge and competence.
Being able to communicate effectively, collaborate, identify issues,
find creative solutions, navigate through large volumes of information
and manage multicultural teams are critical skills for tomorrow’s
leaders. The ability to keep on learning is also highly prized.
Technology enables students to access an unimaginable amount of
data and the ways in which learning is achieved are now more varied.
Today’s learners are part of what the online Urban Dictionary refers to
as the EPIC Generation, who “are experiential, participatory, imagedriven and connected”.
In light of changing trends, NTU retooled its undergraduate student
experience and curriculum to give students more opportunities to
develop the attributes important for lifelong professional success.
Besides gaining the competitive edge, NTU students benefit from a
dynamic and engaging university experience.

What is NTU Education?
It’s often been said that one’s university years are the first draft of
your future. Like the droplets of water that will eventually fill a pail,
every experience contributes to a student’s overall NTU Student
Experience. All freshmen will soon understand what it means to be
NTU students and how they will be prepared for the challenges and
benefits of being part of a globalised society.
In 2011, NTU introduced a new approach to the undergraduate
experience that puts learning within and beyond the curriculum at its
core. Called NTU Education, this approach focuses on how students
learn and provides opportunities to develop skills that will enable them
to thrive in their future professional lives with optimism and confidence.

Creativity is not just about sitting in a corner of the campus dreaming
up the next big thing. That mind-blowing idea can only materialise
when there is an understanding of societal needs, entrepreneurship
and innovation, coupled with the ability to work in teams to find
solutions that lie between the boundaries of different fields.
Competence takes on an entirely different meaning with the emphasis
on self-discipline, depth of knowledge, intercultural competence and
lifelong learning.
The ability to convey ideas and information across different platforms
is a critical skill for any graduate and community leader. Students have
opportunities to hone their communication skills through leadership
and group work, as well as presentation to small and large audiences.

HOW DOES THE NTU CURRICULUM SHAPE
UNDERGRADUATES?
NTU academic life is about strengthening the capacity for learning
with thinking (rather than mere schooling or training) that nurtures the
student to be an Intellectual, a Scholar, a Thinker and a Humanitarian.
The curriculum is carefully designed with relevance to ensure rigour,
diversity and flexibility through a fine balance of depth, breadth and
free elective courses.
The disciplinary depth inculcates self-exploration and creativity in
problem solving. It is also multifaceted with intellectual, practical,
professional and global exposure through enrichment choices
like undergraduate research final year projects, professional work
internships, overseas study exchanges and entrepreneurship courses
and activities.
Through compulsory breadth courses, all students are to read
Communication Skills, Career Foundation, Singapore Studies,
Ethics, Environmental Sustainability, and Enterprise & Innovation.
These aim to solidify the grounding of the Graduate Attributes to
produce the “polished NTU Graduate” - someone with strong ethics,
entrepreneurial mindset, social conscience, communication skills,
and personal flair.
To broaden their horizons, students are offered a wide palette of
breadth and free elective courses in the broad fields of humanities &
social sciences, science & technology, business and liberal arts.
For high calibre students, NTU offers a competitive range of special
programmes to intellectually stretch them through multidisciplinary
learning. Besides a series of double degree and double major
programmes, there are the Premier Scholars Programmes in the
form of Renaissance Engineering Programme, University Scholars
Programme, CN Yang Scholars Programme, and NTU-NIE Teaching
Scholars Programme.
Generalist. Specialist.
Scholar. Thinker
HOW DOES NTU’S PEDAGOGY SUPPORT NEW WAYS
OF LEARNING?
NTU relentlessly renews its pedagogy to cater for active learning
through engaging, empowering and connecting learners. Delivery
and assessment of courses are in tune with real world applications to
foster skills required for employment. More continuous assessment
and a reduction in the emphasis on final examinations are being
progressively aligned with more outcome-based assessment
methods. Collaborative and outcome-based learning are featured
when applicable to impart team-based skills and practical relevance.
Students have a strong sense of who they are and what makes them
distinct as NTU graduates.
IT infrastructure is constantly upgraded for seamless integration with
mobile technologies to enable learning anytime, anywhere. Flipped
classrooms are becoming the norm, giving rise to a combination of
blended-learning and online courses. This avails students towards
self-directed online learning to complement face-to-face discussions
with tutors and peers. NTU has extended its expertise on the global
scale by offering Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). MOOCs
on Forensic Science and on Symmetry have already garnered close
to a hundred thousand in enrolment to date.
A dramatic transformation of the NTU campus has been taking place.
Physical spaces have been re-designed to better support learning.
Tutorial rooms are reconfigured as collaborative learning spaces
supporting small group discussions and equipped with movable
furniture, electronic white boards, multiple LCD screens, and various
IT capabilities.
To support learning and self-study outside classrooms, many pockets
of learning spaces are strategically dispersed throughout the campus
with a mix of recreational, social and wired facilities to create a
relaxing atmosphere that infuses social interaction as an essential part
of learning.

HOW DOES NTU ACHIEVE TEACHING EXCELLENCE?
Every member of the university faculty is both a researcher and
teacher, creating new knowledge and sharing it. Equal emphasis is
placed on research and teaching performance in faculty appraisal.
Awards are presented at School, College and University levels to
recognise outstanding teaching practices and to encourage professors
to implement teaching innovations.
The Teaching Excellence Academy recognises awardees as Fellows,
uplifting their status as great teachers. The academy will also organise
events and conduct Master classes to promote good teaching.
All new faculty members take a foundation course in university
learning and teaching soon after joining the university. To ensure
they are kept current with the latest developments in education and
learning, NTU runs courses and workshops in areas such as new
teaching and learning technologies and tools, and presentation and
communication skills.
Grants will also be awarded to faculty members who wish to raise
the bar in teaching through research in instruction and learning. The
results of their efforts will be shared university-wide.
Teacher. Researcher.
Mentor. Supporter
Campus Vibrancy.
Health and Wellbeing.
Leadership. Internationalisation
clubs or starting and leading special interest groups, students learn
how to think through issues and come up with creative solutions.
In addition to services and support for all students to enhance their
health and wellbeing, NTU provides special support to students
facing challenges during their university years. Through the Campus
Community Approach to Student Health and Wellbeing, students
have access to support and advice in diverse areas such as health,
time management, relationships, financial management and conflict
resolution.
What about life ‘outside the classroom’?
At NTU, academic life is complemented by Student Life – learning
beyond the curriculum.
It entails a willingness to try something new, to develop new skills,
discover new interests and make new friends.
Student leaders have an active role in representing student views
and needs in university-level committees. They are consulted on
important areas that affect academic and campus life. Through this
process, they gain insight into the university strategies and directions.
They hone their leadership and communication skills, developing that
extra edge that will serve them well when they graduate.
The philosophy of NTU Student Life is easily summarised. NTU
students are valued members of the campus community. Each and
every student is a co-owner, co-creator and co-driver of their NTU
Student Experience.
To make the most of a multicultural environment, intercultural
competence is a must. At NTU’s residential campus where more than
100 nationalities are represented, students work, live and socialise in
culturally-diverse groups. Through these interactions and programmes
that enhance inter-cultural skills, they develop cultural sensitivity and
learn to appreciate differences and respect others.
With a student population of 34,000, NTU buzzes with cultural, social,
intellectual, sporting and recreational activities. There are more than
100 student organisations run by students, for students. By joining
The NTU residential community is growing year by year, with more
places now available for undergraduates to be immersed in university
life 24/7.

PREMIER SCHOLARS PROGRAMMES
NTU Premier Scholars Programmes (PSP), comprising the Renaissance Engineering Programme (REP), University Scholars Programme (USP),
CN Yang Scholars Programme (CNYSP) and NTU-NIE Teaching Scholars Programme (TSP), aim to attract the high achieving post-secondary
students with outstanding co-curricular records, leadership qualities and a strong passion to contribute to society.
These programmes are specially developed for exceptional students who look forward to developing their potential through a high-quality education
that goes beyond their regular undergraduate programme and prepares them well for the rising demands of the highly volatile 21st century
workplace. On top of a multidisciplinary and broad-based curriculum, students will also have personal guidance by top faculty, interdisciplinary
and intensive research opportunities, overseas exposure, as well as meeting renowned Nobel Laureates and other world-class leading scientists,
politicians and industry leaders.
Students who are under the CNYSP, USP and TSP will, upon their graduation, be awarded a special certificate in addition to their degree
certificate. Students may also take up a scholarship from NTU or other organisations as PSP is not a scholarship.
Look no further: embark on an intellectual adventure of a lifetime with one of our Premier Scholars Programmes.
Renaissance Engineering Programme
The Renaissance Engineering Programme (REP) is an integrated,
rigorous and fully residential programme with a curriculum that covers
a broad spectrum of multidisciplinary subjects bridging engineering,
business and the liberal arts which includes sciences, mathematics,
engineering technology management, and interdisciplinary studies.
This programme includes a one-year full-fledged overseas experience
at a partner university such as University of California, Berkeley and
Imperial College London with an Industrial Orientation in Year 3, and
it awards a dual-degree comprising Bachelor of Engineering Science
(with specialisation in a chosen engineering discipline) and Master of
Science in Technology Management in four and a half years.
University Scholars Programme
The University Scholars Programme (USP) leads a University-wide
commitment to provide an intellectually stimulating and enriching
academic environment for NTU’s best. The programme includes an
exciting multidisciplinary curriculum that complements their core
curriculum and supplements their general education programme.
From ethics to quantitative reasoning and religions of the world
to astronomy, USP offers a wide range of courses, special events,
and learning opportunities each year. These promise to broaden
students’ perspectives and challenge their creative thinking and
analytical ability.
REP is different from other engineering courses not just in terms of
its breadth as we are exposed to the various engineering disciplines
in the first two years and also to business and the liberal arts. REP
also has a greater depth as we then move on to be specialists in our
chosen fields from Year 3 onwards. Further, the third year spent at
either University of California Berkeley or Imperial College London,
which ends off with an overseas industrial orientation will provide REP
students with a unique global outlook, which few other courses can
provide. The innovative pedagogy which makes use of technology to
facilitate discussion-based learning and the low student to staff ratio
distinguishes REP from all other courses.
The University Scholars Programme offers students an education
enriched by learning from intellectually curious academics from
across the disciplines and other journeys of discovery across the
globe. In just two years, my fellow scholars and I have studied in
Cambodia alongside promising young talents from the United States
and China, and engaged with senior ministers and academics
in dialogue during a youth leader summit in Nepal. At NTU, we
frequently host visits from eminent political figures, Nobel Laureates,
industry pioneers, and inspiring entrepreneurs. USP has broadened
my horizons and kept me focused on envisioning the best version of
myself as I shape my future. Join me at NTU!

aspirations in education and make their contribution to shaping the
future of our nation.
To me, teaching is more like a life-long vocation than merely a career,
a vocation which is challenging, dynamic and at the same time
extremely fulfilling.
I chose to enrol in the NTU-NIE TSP as it offers me a wide range
of opportunities to learn, grow and mature as an aspiring teacher.
Besides learning about teaching pedagogy and subjects, I am able
to pursue my interests in other areas such as singing and drama
by taking up electives offered by NIE, NTU and even overseas
universities. I believe that the experiences I gain from the programme
will make me a more holistic educator, to nurture and care for the
future generations of Singapore.

on the communication strategies that helped me to develop greater
understanding of the context for the design work. In addition, we are
assigned an academic advisor from the faculty who will mentor us to
ensure we made good progress in our coursework and that we are
ready for a career in this field.
Having a well-recognised degree in the arts that provides
interdisciplinary interaction and exchange of ideas is of utmost
importance to me as well and ADM offers exactly that. I have taken
classes in areas of philosophy, business and even biology on top of
the lessons in my core programme. This has expanded my knowledge
into other areas of interests for a well-balanced education.
My space for growth in ADM was not limited to academia; I was
honoured to serve the school as the 9th Vice President of the ADM
Student Club where I managed the domestic business and internal
relations within the school. This role has allowed me to sharpen my
people skills and also lead a team to achieve the goals of the Club.

and Mobility (GEM) Explorer programme for the travel-hungry
undergraduate looking to expand their horizons. I have benefitted
greatly from each of these, taking advantage to delve into research,
learning how to prepare a proper resume and experiencing Scottish
culture during my exchange at the University of Edinburgh. When
I expressed interest in trying my hand at research, my organic
chemistry tutor at that time, Dr Sreekumar, quickly recommended
me into Professor Loh Teck Peng’s organic chemistry lab. Though it
was unusual for first year undergraduates to be accepted, I spent my
first summer learning total synthesis of marine natural products from
an excellent mentor, Dr Hu Xuhong. If you know what you want to do,
NTU most probably has a route for you to pursue it.

My interest has always been in learning
science and unravelling the mysteries and
complexities of the human body. Pursuing a
degree in medicine was the right choice for
me after I completed my A-level examinations.
I decided to join LKCMedicine because the
School has a top-notch curriculum developed
by a solid team of experts. A partnership
between two very established institutions,
NTU and Imperial College London, LKCMedicine gives me the
assurance that I am receiving a quality medical education.
The School’s forward-looking approach and willingness to embrace
new technology, which creates a great learning experience, is an
attraction as well. We can use our iPads to access coursework
anytime and anywhere through the online learning system. Early
on, the insightful patient simulations and pre-clinical exposure have
allowed me to grasp the essential nuances of doctoring in relation
to patient care and team management, something that cannot be
taught in the classroom. Working in a team-based environment also
improves and refines my teamwork and communication skills, two
cardinal skills I’ll need as doctor.

Sport Science
and Management
ssm.ntu.edu.sg
Singapore’s strategic geographical location hoists it to be a
perfect host country for regional sporting events. Bolstered by
its excellent infrastructure, security, steady growth of sportsrelated professionals and trained specialists, Singapore is
slated to be at the regional epicentre of sporting action.
With the inception of The Sports Hub, the demand for trained
sporting professionals has soared. The Sport Science and
Management (SSM) curriculum was specifically conceptualised
in anticipation of this exciting international prospect. It provides
undergraduates with relevant coursework, research resources,
and access to industry experience in the form of academic
projects and internships. SSM is also the sole degree
programme offered by an autonomous university in Singapore
and the region.
The four-year direct honours programme offers pertinent
knowledge in the areas such as physiology, biomechanics,
skill acquisition and psychology, and compounds these with
softer skills such as sport management and coaching, to
equip its students for engagement in every arena within the
sport industry. Outstanding undergraduates will be presented
with the opportunity to spend up to six months at overseas
universities as part of an enriching exchange experience.
Expedition stints organised with industry partners also provide
the opportunity for personal growth and team building.
Soaking up the fervour of progress, SSM has the finest sport
science laboratories and teaching facilities run by well-qualified
and experienced academic staff to provide students with the
best edge in a sport career. You will leave SSM with a solid
foundation to pack a punch in the sporting industry!
PROGRAMME OFFERED
• Bachelor of Science in Sport Science and Management

CAREER PROSPECTS
SSM graduates can look forward to careers as sports
administrators, trainers and coaches, sport scientists,
event managers, writers and marketers, all of which are in
increasing demand because of the burgeoning sport and
leisure industry, as well as Singapore’s rising importance
as a sports destination in the region.
I am very fortunate to have been
exposed to a wide range of experiences
that enriched my learning process. In
addition to the top-notch equipment and
facilities that students get to utilise in
the various sport science laboratories,
the SSM programme also has highly
qualified and experienced faculty to
mentor us. The small-group tutorials
allow me to have in-depth interactions with other students
and lecturers which I find it to be helpful in establishing closer
ties with one another.
I am privileged to participate in the URECA programme
on top of my core field of study. It has provided me with an
opportunity to further my interest in research. The supportive
framework that SSM adopts also allow me to pursue my
sporting goal in netball; I have represented NTU Netball team
in various varsity competitions throughout my four years of
education here.
All in all, I am very proud to be a SSM student.

Minor Programmes
Minor programmes aim to equip students with diversified skills and broader knowledge, beyond what their major disciplines may provide.
Students have to read minor programmes as Unrestricted Electives and the academic units earned will count towards the students’ academic
unit requirements for Unrestricted Electives. To be awarded a minor, students shall not opt for these courses to be graded Satisfactory(S)/
Unsatisfactory (U).
There are currently more than 30 minors available for students’ selection. Students must select a minor that is from a different field as their major
programmes (single degree, double degree, or double major programmes).
Those who wish to pursue a minor should indicate their intention. Upon fulfilling the requirements of the chosen minor programme, students can
proceed to file for the award of the minor.
The award of minor will be reflected in your graduate’s transcript, but not in the degree certificate. There will be no additional certificate issued.
For full details of each minor, the School that offers it and the programme it is offered to, please visit:

I took up a minor programme in translation as it enhances my field
of study. This programme provides a deeper interpretation of both
the English and Chinese languages. It enabled me to understand
the process of linguistic transfer and the cognitive and epistemic
issues involved in cross-cultural encounters and dialogues. I
believe mastering these two languages is vital in our local bilingual
environment. It will also boost my confidence in interacting with
people from all walks of life, especially important personalities who
have a strong command of languages, in the highly dynamic media
industry that I aspire to go into.

Tuition Fees
And expenses
For ACADEMIC YEAR 2015-16
The Ministry of Education, Singapore (MOE) provides Tuition Grant (TG) which covers a substantial portion of the full tuition fees to
eligible students.
Full-time undergraduate students who gain admission to NTU on a subsidised fee basis are eligible for TG up to the normal duration taken to
complete a degree programme. Students who receive the tuition grant are required to pay only the subsidised tuition fee.
For students who move or are re-admitted within NTU or across local universities, they will be eligible for TG up to the normal programme
duration less the number of semesters of TG received for the previous programme(s). For example, if a student has spent two semesters in a local
university, and applies to NTU to pursue a four-year (that is, eight-semester) undergraduate programme, the student will be eligible for the MOE
TG for only six (that is, eight minus two) semesters at NTU.
The TG is also extended to non-Singaporean students (including Singapore Permanent Residents). However, they are required to sign a TG
agreement in which they will be contractually obliged to work in a Singapore-based company for a minimum period of three years upon graduation.
Otherwise, they will be required to pay the non-subsidised tuition fees.
The tuition fees for Academic Year 2015-16 are currently under review. For the latest update on our tuition fees, please visit our website
http://admissions.ntu.edu.sg/UndergraduateAdmissions/Pages/FeesTuitionGrant.aspx.
