Resurgence of India. I t is not even eight months since he took over as the Prime Minister of India, but the way Narendra Modi has been making waves, is simply astonishing. The global attention he has drawn is totally unprecedented. His trips to USA, Japan and Australia, saw him garnering foreign investment that was hitherto unthinkable, and his meetings with the leaders of those nations are renewing and revitalising India’s foreign policy. His receiving into India, the major heads of state like President Xi Jinping of China and President Vladimir Putin of Russia, gave a fresh new impetus to mutual cooperation, and they are re-establishing and reconstructing socio-economic relations. And to meet that man in person, once again, last week, was a special joy and a rare privilege. I was attending the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention, the flagship event of India’s Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) , for the 13th consecutive year. With the aim of connecting India with its vast overseas diaspora, this PBD is held every year, always during 7-9 January. This year, it was held in the beautiful city of Gandhinagar in Gujarat, the Prime Minister’s home state. On January 8, there was a lunch invitation - from the Prime Minister himself - for all the previous recipients of the ‘Pravasi Bharatiya Samman’, the highest award given by the Indian government to overseas Indians, and presented by the President of India. As a former recipient of the award – I was awarded in 2009 - I too had the honour of being a part of this intimate group which enjoyed a short but wonderful time of interaction with Prime Minister Modi. He talked with us and he laughed with us. When I mentioned to him that the situation of Indians in the Arabian Gulf is not the same as of those living in the lap of luxury in western societies, he listened with keen interest . And when I said he should visit Bahrain and the rest of the Gulf, he laughed and said that the opposition is already calling him a ‘pravaasi’ Prime Minister! He said his many foreign visits earned him the nickname, ‘overseas’ Prime Minister, and that he will not be travelling much now. However, he will seriously consider visiting the six GCC countries, perhaps, over a three-day period. On that day, when our lunch meeting with the Prime Minister ended, my mind went back a couple of years, to 2011. I had first met the honourable Prime Minister of India in 2011 at his house in Ahmedabad, when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. It was when I had received the Vision Foundation Award, and when he had spoken to the awardees. My friends would recall that, after spending more than one hour with him - and after having seen and read earlier, about the development that Gujarat state had achieved under his leadership - I was so awed and inspired that I kept telling them he would be the Prime Minister one day. Of course within an year or so after my privilege of meeting him in 2011, he was announced as the Prime Ministerial Candidate of BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) for 2014 elections. He then won the elections with a massive mandate in May 2014. And well, the rest is history – in the making. The PBD was followed by the seventh edition of ‘Vibrant Gujarat’, one of the most high profile events ever to be held in India. It was inaugurated by Modi on Jan 11. I was captivated not only by the inspiring speech he gave to the huge assembly then, but also by the praises the world leaders showered on him for his visionary leadership. Notable speeches were from the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, US Secretary of State John Kerry, World Bank President Jim Yong Kim, Prime Ministers of Bhutan and Macedonia; and also speaking there were many Industrialists and billionaires from India - including the Ambanis, Birlas, and Adanis, and heads of notable industrial houses in Japan, Australia, USA, and many other countries. The head of the World Bank said that India can contribute to International community’s dream of eliminating world poverty, under Modi’s leadership. John Kerry said President Obama is eagerly looking forward to visiting India next week, as the Chief Guest for the Republic Day Celebrations to be held on 26 January in Delhi. Obama, incidentally, would be the first US President to be the Chief Guest for India’s Republic Day, and also the first sitting US President to visit India twice. Democracy, demographic dividend and demand are the three Ds making India an ideal destination for investment, he said. In a short span of seven months, he said, we have been able to change the atmosphere of despair and uncertainty. “My Government is trying to generate confidence. India’s presence as well as its rich past is being recognised worldwide. Countries are coming forward to work with us,” he said. “We are changing fast. India is growing fast. India is moving faster than expected. We are ready more than ever before.” Modi affirmed. With corruption charges on several ministers of the previous government, and with a slowdown in the economic progress the task ahead of him did not seem easy, when he came to the helm of the affairs. But from the way he is steering the ship, he does not merely ‘seem’ to be the captain in-charge. He really is. PRICE OF THREE FINGERS, BD350! KK Nair news@dt.bh H ow much is a finger worth? Baffled? This definition of UC embodies three related objectives: • Equity in access to health services - those who need the services should get them, not only those who can pay for them; • That the quality of health services is good enough to improve the health of those receiving services; and • Financial-risk protection ensuring that the cost of using care does not put people at risk of financial hardship. Universal coverage brings the hope of better health and protection from poverty for hundreds of millions of people - especially those in the most vulnerable situations. Universal coverage is firmly based on the WHO constitution of 1948 declaring health a fundamental human right and on the Health for All agenda set by the AlmaAta declaration in 1978. Achieving the health Millennium Development Goals and the next wave of targets looking beyond 2015 will depend largely on how countries succeed in moving towards universal coverage. The way health systems are financed is a critical determinant for reaching universal coverage since they determine whether health services exist and are available and whether people can afford to use health services when they need them. The availability of funds for health is a fundamental question to all countries. For poorer countries, the challenge is to increase the funding available for health so that they are able to provide and make accessible the needed set of health services - treatment, prevention, promotion and rehabilitation - of sufficient quality. For richer countries, the challenge is to protect the current levels of health expenditure while responding to the challenge of an ageing population and cost pressures from technological advances. Annual misery continues unabated Yesterday was the first time the rain came down this year in any real quantity and despite all the promises by various officials and government bodies after the deluge of November 2013, nothing much seems to have changed regarding improving and maintenance of roads prone to flooding. I have seen, on occasions, reports that some roads have been improved by the ‘gravel type’ format. However, a short trip to the big supermarket on the main road in Adliya meant having yet again to wade through the annual flooded Isthmus of Road 2735 Area 327 to get the shopping affair. Since I first arrived to my present residence via ‘dry land’ in 1983, the same problem occurs annually and it is really frustrating that year in and year out despite Municipality tankers clearing the excess water after heavy rains, the same problem persists with no one in higher authority seemingly taking any responsibility and addressing the problem. The median forecast in a poll of 15 economists saw the Asian giant’s gross domestic product (GDP) expanding 7.3 per cent last year, down from 7.7pc in 2013. That would be the worst full-year result since the 3.8pc recorded in 1990 -- the year after the Tiananmen Square crackdown. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) releases the official GDP figures for the fourth quarter and the whole of 2014 on Tuesday. For this year, the economists C see growth slowing further to a median 7.0pc, as Chinese leaders proclaim a “new normal” of slower expansion and emphasise economic reforms. “China may introduce many restructuring and reform measures this year and this may have some negative impact on economic growth,” ANZ economist Liu Li-Gang said. He said that they might include changes to stateowned enterprises, financial reforms such as interest rate liberalisation and looser restrictions on private banks. China, a main driver of global growth, was beset last year by problems ranging from weakness in manufacturing and trade to financial worries over rising debt levels and falling real estate prices, which have sent shockwaves through the key property sector. For October to December 2014, the survey saw GDP as having risen a median 7.2pc year-on-year. That would be marginally weaker than the third quarter’s 7.3pc, and the worst quarterly result since the first three months of 2009, when growth logged a 6.6 per cent expansion during the global financial crisis. Authorities appeared to take last year’s performance largely in their stride, sticking to a scenario whereby the country’s consumers take the lead in underpinning expansion in coming years, emphasising in public statements the quality of growth rather than its size. The mountain of tariq – a rock in the sea of finance I hope all of you have had a good end of 2014 and a great start into the New Year. A new year is always an exciting time, new ideas, new plans and new hopes. If one of your “New Years Resolutions” is to start your own business and it should involve something in the financial industry, why not have a closer look at “The Mountain of Tariq” (Jabal Tāriq)? What..? You have never heard of such mountain and don’t know where it could be? I am almost certain you do, but maybe just under a different name. I am, of course, referring to Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory, which is guarding the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea near the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. Most people imagine it as an independent island, but it’s not and so shares its northern border with the province of Cadiz in Spain. The name Gibraltar is the Spanish derivation of “Jabal Tariq” and refers to the territory’s most famous landmark, the Rock of Gibraltar. It name is a tribute to General Tariq Ibn Ziyad who was in charge of the first invasion into Iberia. Gibraltar was Spanish until 1704 when an Anglo-Dutch fleet in behalf of the Austrian Archduke captured it during the war over the succession to the Spanish throne. In 1713 it was given to England ‘for ever’, so that in return, the United Kingdom would no longer participate in the war. Despite several attempts of Spanish monarchs to regain control over this southern most part of the peninsula, all attempts failed and even two referenda (the last as recent as 2002) made it clear, that Gibraltarians want to remain British to this day. The economy of Gibraltar had long been dominated by the British navy, but has since shifted its focus to 4 major segments: Financial Industry, Online Gambling, Shipping and Tourism. Gibraltar has a low fixed corporate tax rate (10.0%) and offers easy access to the rest of the European Union, which helped attract a great number of (albeit virtual) investors. It has a strong Financial Services Commission, which regulates the markets and the establishment of the GFC (Gibraltar Financial Center) within the Department of Trade and Industry has helped to develop the financial sector even more. Interestingly, this rather compact territory has 0.6 banks per 1,000 residents, which is the world’s 5th highest bank per capita ratio. Given the time of year, next week, we are going to leave cold and wintery Europe behind for now and head eastward, into the Pacific Ocean to discover another interesting offshore jurisdiction – The Marshall Islands. Until then...your ASvW A 15 Monday, January 19, 2015 2014 was Earth’s hottest year in history new study has recently provided a deeper insight into how filthy mobile phones are that people use in their daily life. Students from the University of Surrey reportedly revealed just how much bacteria is on the phone and it’s pretty gross. Bacteria use all sorts of things as vectors in order to transmit insects, water, food, coughs and sneezes, or sexual contact. Many of the phones showed the biggest and clearest blotch of bacteria growing around where the “home” button was. Most of the bacteria is harmless but disgusting. And some diseasecarrying bacteria such as the Staphylococcus aureus has turned up in recent years. Expressing anger during negotiations cool at times A ccording to two separate analyses by NASA and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) scientists 2014 was Earth’s warmest year in modern record since 1880. The 10 warmest years in the instrumental record, with the exception of 1998, have now occurred since 2000. This trend continues a long-term warming of the planet, according to an analysis of surface temperature measurements by scientists at Goddard Institute of Space Studies in New York. While 2014 temperatures continue the planet’s longterm warming trend, scientists still expect to see year-toyear fluctuations in average global temperature caused by phenomena such as El Nino. These phenomena warm or cool the tropical Pacific and are thought to have played a role in the flattening of the long-term warming trend over the past 15 years. B ringing anger to the negotiating table may at times be helpful as researchers have found that suppressing anger about important points may cause negotiators to lose the focus of discussions. “These findings cast doubts on the belief that negotiators should always suppress their anger,” said lead researcher Bo Shao from University of New South Wales in Australia. Through an online study, it was found that negotiators did not necessarily become mentally exhausted when they tried to suppress their anger. Instead, they lost focus on the matters at hand if they tried to quash their feelings about issues that were integral to the discussions. The same did not happen if the negotiators bottled up their infuriation about an incidental matter. ‘Ghost particle’ seems to prove ‘aliens’ do exist! A never-before seen picture, revealing a spectral-like ‘ghost particle’ discovered in debris gathered from outer space, hints at existence of aliens. Researcher Milton Wainwright insists that the particle resembling a chiffon scarf with the width of a human hair and a ghostly appearance, found in dust and particulate matter collected from the stratosphere, is biological. Wainwright added that they can speculate that in its space environment this ‘ghost particle’ is a living balloon which an alien microscopic organism might inflate with lighter than air gasses allowing it to float in the air or the seas of an unknown space environment. He continued that they also produce tiny dents we call impact craters when they land on the sampler so there is almost no doubt of their space origin. Irregular heart beat detected in marine mammals S cientists have detected high frequency of heart arrhythmias or irregular heart beats in bottlenose dolphins and Weddell seals during their deepest dives. This shows that despite their remarkable adaptations to aquatic life, exercising while holding their breath remains a physiological challenge for marine mammals. “This study changes our understanding of bradycardia (a marked reduction in heart rate) in marine mammals,” said lead author Terrie Williams, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at University of CaliforniaSanta Cruz. “We are not seeing lethal arrhythmias but it is putting the heart in an unsteady state that could make it vulnerable to problems,” Williams added. Cardiac arrhythmias occurred in more than 70 percent of deep dives. Biosensor to help machines smell like humans I n a first, a researcher from the University of Manchester has created a biosensor that can help machines smell the way humans do. The new generation of biosensors with an acute ability to sniff out problems can help machines smell when food has gone bad or how much pollution is in the atmosphere. “It has been challenging to get machines to be able to differentiate between smells that are mirror images of each other, which was a real barrier to creating machines which are able to smell as well or better than humans,” explained professor Krishna Persaud, lead author of the paper. To develop the biosensor, Persaud along with colleagues from University of Bari in Italy utilised an odourant-binding protein. Such proteins are found in the mucus of the nose that work olfactory receptors helping us to create our perception of smell. Using a type of transistor incorporating these proteins, the scientists were able to measure the unique changes in current as the proteins reacted to odours and record them. The system is incredibly sensitive with a detection limit that approaches that of the human nose. 16 Monday, January 19, 2015 His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa yesterday received the Director of the Royal Windsor Horse Show, Brigadier Simon Brooks, currently on a visit to Bahrain. We give you the 5 snubs, which should have at least bagged a nomination. LOGAN LERMAN 1. David Oyelowo Category: Best Actor January 19, 1992 A merican actor, known for playing the title role in the fantasy-adventure Percy Jackson films who appeared in commercials in the mid-1990s, before starring in the series Jack & Bobby (2004– 2005) and the movies The Butterfly Effect (2004) and Hoot (2006). Lerman gained further recognition for his roles in the western 3:10 to Yuma, the thriller The Number 23, the comedy Meet Bill, and 2009’s Gamer and My One and Only. He played d’Artagnan in 2011’s The Three Musketeers, starred in the coming-of-age drama The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012), and has supporting roles in the 2014 films Noah and Fury. The Lego Movie Category: Best Animated Feature Film Perhaps one of the biggest in Oscar history, the non-nomination of The Lego Movie has left everyone baffled. Life Itself Category: Best Documentary Feature Roger Ebert is arguably the most influential critic of his time. This documentary, based on his memoir, was directed by acclaimed documentary filmmaker Steve James, and received an enthusiastic thumbs-up from critics. So, it was tipped to make it to the short-list and the snub has surprised Oscar watchers. 4. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross Category: Best Music -Original Score Reznor and Ross’s score for Gone Girl is filled with eerie silences and a low industrial hum that are effective in conveying how the lead couple’s lives have become mechanical. Perhaps, it was not considered because it is so understated. 5. Gillian Flynn Category: Best Adapted Screenplay Novelist Gillian Flynn did a great job in adapting her own book into a film that never felt like it had too many voice-overs and yet managed to convey the inner feelings of its characters. Ghana have been continental champions four times, but not G since 1982, although they have reached at least the semi-finals in each of the last four tournaments. “We have lots of young players and I wouldn’t say we are here to win the trophy. We’ll go one game at a time,” Ayew told media gathered in Mongomo. This time, Ghana are something of an unknown quantity, with Avram Grant only recently taking charge of a side who endured a disappointing World Cup campaign, a draw with eventual winners Germany aside. Their campaign was also overshadowed by the decision to send home both Sulley Muntari and Kevin-Prince Boateng for indiscipline. Of Grant, the former Chelsea manager, Ayew said: “Today we have a great coach who has worked at big clubs and has lots of experience, so I am happy because he can bring us a lot.” MESSI SHINES Lionel Messi hat-trick keeps Barca in sight of Madrid Madrid ionel Messi struck a stunning hat-trick to ensure Barcelona maintained the pressure on La Liga leaders Real Madrid with a 4-0 win away to Deportivo la Coruna to cut the gap at the top to one point. Eid said they would hold discussions after his return from Australia, where Bahrain have lost their first B two games and play a dead rubber against Qatar on Monday in their final game. The 35-year-old Bahraini has only been in charge since November, when he succeeded Iraq’s Adnan Hamad who was dismissed during the Gulf Cup -- just three months after being appointed. “I haven’t discussed this with the board of directors or the president because we’re still in the tournament, we have one match left,” Eid said on Sunday about his future in the role. Bahrain’s coaching merrygo-round has been spinning rapidly since Anthony Hudson took over from Argentine Gabriel Calderon in August 2013. The Englishman was replaced by Hamad when he left to take charge of New Zealand, but the Iraqi was then rapidly dismissed during Bahrain’s winless Gulf Cup. The agent added: ‘She has been very close to his family throughout their relationship. Any negative rumors about Irina and Ronaldo’s family are completely false and have not been a factor in the cause of the split. Irina has no comments at the moment.’ Shayk refused to attend the 60th birthday party of the Ballon d’Or winner’s mother according to a newspaper in Portugal. Shayk had told Ronaldo that she would not be attending the bash in his native Madeira, and the ensuing row served to end the pair’s five-year romance. As a parting dig to Ronaldo, the Russian model has now stopped following him on Twitter. P31 CAZORLA STARS 32 32 Monday, January 19, 2015 DE-VIL STRIKES! Hits fastest One-day century Johannesburg B de Villiers hit the fastest century in one-day international history as South Africa overwhelmed the West Indies in the second one-day international at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on Sunday. De Villiers raced to his century off 31 balls - five balls fewer than the previous record - on the way to an astonishing 149 off 44 balls (9 fours, 16 sixes). With opening batsmen Hashim Amla and Rilee Rossouw also hitting centuries in a South African record first wicket stand, South Africa piled up a massive 439 for two. The West Indies were never likely to chase down a world record target but managed a A respectable 291 for seven to give South Africa a 148-run win and a 2-0 lead in the fivematch series. The target was never likely to be within the reach of the West Indies, especially after big-hitting Chris Gayle was caught at deep midwicket off Morne Morkel for 19 in the fifth over. Dwayne Smith, caught off a Morkel no-ball in the first over when he had four, made 64 off 65 balls and Denesh Ramdin contributed 57 off 55 deliveries. Amla and Rossouw put on 247 for the first wicket - a record partnership for any wicket for South Africa. Rossouw was dismissed off the third ball of the 39th over. De Villiers promoted himself to number three and struck the ball out of the middle of his bat from the first delivery he faced, which he thrashed for four past bowler Jerome Taylor.
