Having a fantastic staff and a dedicated Board of Governors makes my job more fun than work. The Change of Command was fantastic. Everyone enjoyed the delicious food, fun, entertainment and camaraderie. To everyone who attended, thank you! If you did not, please plan on attending next year. This event really showcases our food, facility and friendships, the essence of The Florida Yacht Club. Most of the Committees have begun to meet to plan their activities for this year. Please consider joining one of our Committees as these are the “heartbeat” of The Florida Yacht Club. They are fun, rewarding and the best place to meet new Members. Please get involved. The Big Plan construction is now in full swing. We are excited about the final result but please understand that while construction is in progress, The Florida Yacht Club will be somewhat of a mess. In February, we have some great Club events that everyone should make every effort to attend. See the Events Page for a complete list. Get involved and participate in these great functions! The Club’s major focus in 2015 is to continue to deliver value to all of our Club’s Members. In 2015, the Board of Governors and the Club’s Management Team will work hard to add new Members. Dining: The Backhouse Supper Club- For those that enjoy a fine dining experience. The FYC Sunday Buffet has been revamped to include a Full Buffet along with a Soup & Salad option and the Build Your Own Blood Mary and Mimosa Station! The Pool Area: Renovation of the Snack Bar will be turned into a full service bar area complete with TVs and bar stools, upgraded menu, waiter and towel service. Membership Dear Members, All of the activity taking place around the Club is really terrific to see and we believe that this is a good indication of the success we will have in 2015! Last year was an exceptional year for the Club with increased utilization, encouraging financials and the furthering of our exciting The Big Plan. We have several important objectives but continuing to grow our Membership remains one of our top priorities. With this in mind, please review the following initiatives: 1. Introductory Program: A perfect way to engage prospective Members and introduce them into the Club while they are considering. Membership. The Introductory Program is similar to our Summer Program but is available throughout the entire year for any three consecutive months. 2. 2015 Commodores Council: For those who sponsor two or more new Members (at least one Resident), their name will be placed on the prestigious Commodores Council plaque. 3. Reinstatement Amnesty: With all of the positive things taking place, we plan to receive a number of requests for reinstatements from past Members. Following a good response from last year, the Reinstatement Amnesty is available this year from March 1st - May 31st. We are confident that these proactive programs will provide the platform we need to aid in Membership growth. General Manager Ken Nythus welcomes you to the Bradenton Yacht Club! The Bradenton Yacht Club offers elegant as well as casual dining in its spacious Formal Dining Room and adjacent Burgee Room as well as a full bar that overlooks the scenic Manatee River. There is also an additional Members Room and Commodores Room that are perfect for meetings or small parties. The club has a 52-slip basin and a 185’ Transient Dock with 30 and 50 amp service for members and FCYC visitors along Governors Cut which connects Terra Ceia Bay to the Manatee River. The heated swimming pool and Tiki Bar are situated along the Cut as well. Fuel and pump-out facilities are available along with a boat launching ramp. Overnight guests have access to restrooms with showers, ice, cable television, wifi connections and morning newspaper. There are also bicycles to explore Snead Island and nearby Emerson Point Park. Fleet & Sailing This month, our Junior Sailors will attend the Regional USODA Valentine’s Day Regatta in St. Petersburg, Florida. Our 420 and Laser sailors will also compete in major regattas this month: the Club 420 Midwinter Championships in Jensen Beach, Florida and the Laser Midwinter Championships in Clearwater, Florida. Congratulations to our team for attending these National Events and sail fast! Spring Jr. Race Team practice will start Sunday, March 1st. If your child is interested in joining our race team in Opti, 420, or Lasers, please get them signed-up. Registration information will be on the website or you can email me directly at jweinbecker@thefloridayachtclub.org. Junior “Learn to Sail” classes will start in March for Optis and 420s. Please email me for more information. The FYC Women’s Sailing Group meeting will be held Tuesday, February 10th from 7:00 - 9:00 pm. This month’s topic is “Cocktails & Code Flags.” We will discuss how Nautical Code Flags are used in boating and sailboat racing. We will also talk about how to get involved in sailboat racing, plan our FYC women’s teams for 2015’s regattas and remove discuss how to volunteer for Race Committee. No sailing or racing experience is necessary. I hope you will join this fun group of ladies. Adult Sailing Seminars start this month! Learn to Sail “Crew U 101” will be held on Wednesday evenings in February. We’ll meet on the 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th from 6:30 - 8:30 pm. The cost is $100 for FYC Members or $150 per person for Sponsored Guests. Topics to be covered include: sailing basics, how the boat works, knots & basic boat tuning, points of sail and sail trim. The annual Frostbite Cruise is a Club Tradition for both boaters and those with land yachts. The event, hosted by Past Commodore Ira, is on his farm overlooking Black Creek and is an event not to be missed! Boats of all sizes form a massive chain of lines, anchors and fenders as we attempt to tie as many boats together as the weather will allow. Spirits are always high as we gather around a warm fire and enjoy some other spirits before cooking steaks over the massive Yacht Club grills. If you return Sunday morning, a feast awaits with a breakfast cookout that will warm even the coldest of winter mornings. Please join us for this great Club Tradition! Progress is slow but steady in the building of our new Fleet Center. Power is being rerouted and transformers moved as we start building our new home on the cove. The new facility will give us a great base of operations to grow our sailing events, youth sailing program and other boating activities. We are planning a return to the Bahamas this year. If you are interested in taking your boat over in June or flying over to meet everyone in the Abacos, please contact me so I can add you to the list. We had several boats make the journey last year and it was a beautiful week to enjoy all of the activities the Bahamas had to offer. Don’t miss this year’s trip! We have many opportunities to help with our sailing programs as spring arrives. The Orange Peel Regatta is one of our major regattas that we will host on March 20th - 22nd. We are always looking for volunteers to help run these regattas so if you are interested in volunteering, let me know. I am very proud of the accomplishments of our Junior Sailing Teams. Under the direction of Jodi Weinbecker, they have traveled far and wide these last few months and have many awards for their efforts. A special thank you to our team parents as well for your efforts in taking your children to the regattas. You and your children make us proud when we see the many accomplishments they have made representing The Florida Yacht Club! Will Allen Fleet Captain Tennis My Point The Florida Yacht Club will be hosting a city wide Junior Team Tennis event on February 28th. If you have a child that is in our Orange Ball Group or older they are probably eligible to play in this cool event. For more details regarding this event, please give the Tennis Pro Shop a call. Due to this event, the courts will be completely booked on the 28th of February. If you would like to play, we will do our best to find you a court close by. Thank you in advance for your understanding as we host this. I want to congratulate Mark Worsham on being appointed as the Director of Junior Tennis for the winter/spring program. Mark’s responsibilities and goals will be to keep the communications strong and current on all junior activities at the Club and around Jacksonville as it pertains to the FYC Juniors. Mark will be communicating through weekly emails, phone calls, Clubster, Facebook and good old fashion “face to face”. We have 12 - 14 USTA teams representing FYC this year. With Working Women’s and USTA leagues crossing over on play time, our court sheet will be very busy on Saturdays. Please keep in mind that we are down one court right now. We will always do our best to find you a court to play on. Due to the construction with The Big Plan, the Mixed Doubles Club Championship has been postponed. This Championship, the Finals and the Players’ Party will be rescheduled to a date following the completion of the Tennis Courts. This night is usually the highlight of February except for maybe the Super Bowl and the Daytona 500. This year we are doing something a little different from the norm on Valentine’s. I have created a special menu that will be the only menu available (the menu is on the Events Page) on Saturday the 14th. It has been awhile since it fell on Saturday so make reservations now and guarantee a special meal for that special someone. Another one of the many things to look forward to this month is the FYC Sunday Buffet. We have decided that in order to better serve the Membership, we are going to enhance the buffet with some new additions like Smoked Salmon, Cereals, Yogurts and a Special Entrée that will change from week to week. There will be a small price increase but this will still be the best value in town. The next Chef ’s Dinner Series will be on March 26th in the Astor Room. I think this concept has been a tremendous success thanks to the support of the Membership. It’s a great chance to take advantage of learning new cooking techniques. I will answer any questions the best I can and hopefully everyone walks away having learned something about cooking. Look for the menu in next month’s NewsWaves. As for the Club traditions, we are having the Frostbite Cruise at Ira’s Farm on Black Creek which is always a great time. We will supply the attendees with a full salad and baked potato bar. The Members are responsible for supplying their own entrée. The entrée of choice is usually steak. Like last year, I will be cutting the steaks by the ounce. See the Events Pages for pricing and pick-up information. You reserve your steak and I will cut it and vacuum seal it for you to take to the Cruise for dinner Saturday night. Cuisine How Good Was the 2014 Vintage? A vintage wine is one made from grapes that were all, or primarily (varies by region but typically at least 85%), grown and harvested in a single specified year. Vintage is the year in which the grapes were harvested. The importance of vintage, however, is both varied and disputed. In wine produced on the colder limits of wine production (Burgundy for example), vintage is often very important, because some seasons will be much warmer and produce riper grapes and better wine. On the other hand, a poor growing season can lead to grapes low in sugar, which lowers the quality of the resulting wine. In many wine regions, especially in the New World, growing seasons are much more uniform. In dry regions, the systematic and controlled use of irrigation also contributes to uniform vintages. However, such wines are regularly labeled by vintage because of consumer demand. Wines of superior vintages from prestigious producers and regions will often command much higher prices than those from average vintages. This is especially the case if wines are likely to improve further with some age in the bottle. For the men and women who make wine, perhaps no word is more packed with nervous anticipation than “harvest.” After months of spending time, sweat and money in their vineyards, it’s the moment to see what nature delivered. For California, 2014 brought another year of record-breaking drought. For America’s East Coast, winter brought a deep freeze. For much of Western Europe, 2014 was unpredictable, with sun, clouds and plenty of hail in some unfortunate spots. Napa Valley vintners are celebrating another early and excellent quality year. In spite of the drought and the South Napa earthquake, vintners are using words like “quality,” “depth of flavor” and “excellent” to describe their expectations for the vintage. Many are also noting “perfect weather,” “abundant crop” and “good fortune” among the blessings they are counting in a season where Mother Nature threw a curveball. In Washington and Oregon, sunshine was abundant and harvest came early. French winemakers report a challenging but ultimately rewarding year. From Bordeaux to Champagne, spring was warm and sunny. But summer brought cloudy wet days to much of the country, requiring countless hours in the vineyards. Just in time, September brought sun. So, the answer to how good a year was 2014, varies by region, but in general, it was quite a good year after all! The Wine Club meets for a tasting class the SECOND Tuesday of each month.
