Consider joining a Connecting Circle (info meeting is now Sunday, March 1st, after church, in the library) First Parish’s new Connecting Circles are about gathering with a small group of adults for spiritual journeying, increasing sacred awareness, and sharing personal experiences. Circles are structured to allow members to connect more closely with themselves and each other than can be accomplished at larger church functions. Two Circles are launching in March. Both Circles will be held at church and will run through June. Sign up on the sheets in Parish Hall. Circle A - Friday, March 20th. 7pm (1st and 3rd Fridays), and Circle K - Sunday, March 22nd. 5:30pm (2nd and 4th Sundays) Next Sermon and Soup Book Discussion – 3/15/15 Rev. Lara will preach on March 15, 2015 on The Selma Awakening and her experience at the 50th Anniversary commemoration of the Selma to Montgomery Civil Rights March. Those interested are encouraged to read the book in preparation. However, all are welcome, even if you haven’t read the book. The Selma Awakening: How the Civil Rights Movement Tested and Changed Unitarian Universalism Editor: Mark D. Morrison-Reed The foremost scholar of African-American Unitarian Universalist history presents this long-awaited analysis of the denomination's civil rights activism in Selma, Alabama, in 1965. Selma represented a turning point for Unitarian Universalists. In answering Martin Luther King Jr.'s call to action, they shifted from passing earnest resolutions about racial justice to putting their lives on the line for the cause. Morrison-Reed traces the long history of race relations among the Unitarians and the Universalists leading up to 1965, exploring events and practices of the late nineteenth century and first half of the twentieth century. He reveals the disparity between their espoused values on race and their values in practice. And yet, in 1965 their activism in Selma—involving hundreds of ministers and the violent deaths of Rev. James Reeb and Viola Liuzzo—at last put them in authentic relationship with their proclaimed beliefs. With rigorous scholarship and unflinching frankness, The Selma Awakening provides a new way of understanding Unitarian Universalist engagement with race and offers an indispensable new resource for anyone interested in UU history. $18 at the UUA Bookstore - http://www.uuabookstore.org/productdetails.cfm?PC=2088 Also available as an eBook in the Amazon Kindle Store and on Google Play. I am from blue blue carpets and tiles, and counters and sky robin egg, sea spray, periwinkle and teal sometimes lively and busy, sometimes blank and dull. I am from the pussy willow bush from the climbing tree that leaned against it’s stump rotting and dying, but supporting little feet for so long. If a tree falls near the driveway and noone is around to hear it does that soften the sting of it’s loss? I am from pizza on Fridays, caroling at the monastery, and family game night charades. From Julie Margaret Allaire and Daniel Mendon MacDonald who are the reason my last name is sixteen letters long plus a hyphen. I am from the happy fault of singing too much and the discouraging one of always being late. From leather aprons and homemade chicken soup. From ¨Go play outside¨ to ¨She’s melting, she’s melting!¨ when my sister ducks out of the rain. I am from a place where you can believe what you want and no one can tell you not to from a place where each person is important where I can recite our covenant because I’ve heard it so often. From where I learned to sing and talk to adults, to teachers, to crowds. 7 I am from Dover and Gilford, New Hampshire a New Englander, by blood and spirit and the state I write on envelopes and the way I pronounce ¨syrup¨ the right way, like Sir, you’re up. From Albania and Canada from Scotland and England from places I only dream of visiting. I am from the girl scout troup my Grandmother led that all three of her kids (including my dad) were part of. From the way that my Great Uncle lived in his childhood home after his sister got married, after his brother died young, after his father finally passed on, all by himself until last week when he packed up the house, box by box all by himself and moved out. I am from the top of our piano on which my framed and smiling face stands among those of my family. From the long wooden swing gathering dust in our cellar dust that obscures my once vibrant memories of it hanging in the barn that belonged to my grandparents. I am from that barn, old and beautiful. I am from my middle name, ¨Page¨ spelled like the part of a book that is responsible for 90% of all my procrastination of everything, ever. I am from paper which inspires an endless list of words but can only hold so much forcing each poem to come to an end. Note: This beautiful poem was shared by Jackie at the Sunday Service 2/22/2015 “The Future Isn’t What it Use to Be”. 8 Funding Opportunities!
