Meal Venue Change for Dining Services on Thursday, Sept. 27
For supper on Thursday, September 27, 2012 Dining Services will be hosting a large Alumni group in the
Terrace Cafe. In order to suit the needs of that large group, the Terrace Cafe will be closed for supper.
Dining Services will be offering a cook-out on the lawn adjacent to the Alumni House under the large white
tent. The meal will include a burger bar with all the toppings, chips, potato salad, a novelty dessert, and
lemonade. The cost for this meal will be $5. The meal time will be from 5-7 p.m. The Gazebo will be open
as normal and will provide an additional meal option for the students.
We appreciate your understanding and patience as we host this special group of individuals on our
campus.

Anthony Kent has recently come to the General Conference Ministerial Association from the South Pacific
Division where he served as Division Ministerial Secretary and the Director of the Institute of Evangelism.
Anthony's ministry experience includes pastoring local churches, church planting, public evangelism as a
union and division evangelist, and leading study tours and other professional growth events for pastors. He
has recently developed a Ministerial Internship Development and Training syllabus. Anthony is happily
married to Debora and they have two daughters, Chelsea and Georgia.

Traffic Restrictions for Friday and Sunday of Homecoming

For the duration of the Homecoming Parade, approximately 5-6 p.m., the following traffic restrictions will be
in place:
The inbound lane of J.N. Andrews Blvd. will be closed.
The gate on International Court by the Office of Campus Safety will be closed.
Motorists entering campus from Timberland Drive will only be able to make a right hand turn onto
campus.
Parade attendees are encouraged to park in the following lots: Howard Performing Arts Center,

He and his wife Lois have two children, Ruth and Jonathan. Laurence is very passionate about radical

Delight or Distraction: Sabbath-Keeping Motivations and Subjective Well-Being
Karl Bailey, director of Behavioral Neuroscience, will be the speaker. Sabbath-keeping as a Christian practice
is a way of marking the passage of time and acknowledge God’s sovereignty. We will examine whether
motivational differences in Sabbath-keeping experiences are related to subjective well-being and discuss the

AU Pool & Beaty Gym - Lockers
Lockers at Beaty Gym are available for use by any pool patron. In order to store items overnight, however, it
is necessary to register that locker at the pool reception desk for a fee of $10 per semester. Beaty Gym staff
reserves the right to remove items left overnight in any unregistered locker. Padlocks on unregistered lockers
may also be cut.
A probationary period has been alloted for all patrons to register their lockers appropriately. ALL lockers will
be cleared at the end of Fall Semester 2012. Please ensure that your items and locks are removed before the
beginning of Christmas Break.

Planning a Campus for the Next Generation of Seventh-day
Adventist Education
The planning and design for the future of the Andrews University campus begins now. This fall semester, the
School of Architecture, Art & Design is taking the lead to chart a course for the next 10 years of campus
development. Everyone is invited to participate!

This is an unprecedented campus-wide planning process where students, faculty, staff, alumni and
community members will be considering ideas and actions to help shape the next generation of buildings and
spaces for a distinctive Seventh-day Adventist Christian education at Andrews University.
The goal is to shape an updated and revised Campus Master Plan and supporting design guidelines by
January 2013. The Campus Design Studio was created for this purpose and will work with the campus
community through a series of interactive meetings and workshops. This effort plugs into Strategic Initiative
#6 of the new Andrews University 2012–17 Strategic Plan. This project is intended to help shape the
environment and facilities that support the operation of a quality academic and student life program here at
Andrews University.

WHO WE ARE
Journey is a thriving group of young people who attend or live near the
campus of AndrewsВ University. Although most of them are students,
Journey is much more than another singing group on campus. Journey
members take time out of their schedules to come together every Sunday,
with no academic credit given for motivation, and sing spirituals and other
Christ filled songs.

to start an ensemble which would sing old spirituals.В At first, their only
concern was to share their joy of singing however, as time passed, the Holy
Spirit planted seeds in the hearts of each member. Through inspiration of
the Holy Spirit, the group chose a name, and it was decided that Journey
would be the most appropriate title. It echoed their mission and purpose in a
very clear and effective way.

THE PROJECT
Because Journey is a group made up of students who come and go, we
decided it was time, after 9 years of ministering, to bring all the different
members that have been a part of Journey, at one time in those 9 years,
together to not only fellowship with one another, swap stories, and learn, but
to make music.В Because Journey is quite large, ranging from 15-30 each school year with a
steady flow of new and old members, getting together to make a live album
will cost a lot of money.
With your help we cannot only fund the album, but make the cost of bringing
everyone together for this joyous occasion much easier. Your support will go
to fund all the different costs it takes to house and feed Journey members
as well as pay for the production and duplication of the actual CD.

We are estimating a group of about 100 people will be involved with the live
album. We have set a long weekend in October for fellowship and practice.
The cost is based on those 100 people and the 5 days they will be here.

Open House Celebrating SPLAD's New Suite
Andrews University will celebrate the Department of Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology’s move to new
quarters in Bell Hall with an open house and ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012. The
open house, which includes complimentary hearing screenings, will be held from 3:30–7 p.m. with the ribbon
cutting ceremony taking place at 4 p.m. Students, clients, faculty and members of any professional and
referral healthcare organizations are invited to attend. This is also the first official event for the new Andrews
University School of Health Professions.
The expanded and renovated location in Bell Hall provides the growing department with room to expand their
educational vision, programs and Speech & Hearing Clinic. The remodeled suite features new state-of-the-art
sound booths for complete hearing evaluations, and a new lab monitoring room for the Speech & Hearing
Clinic. The clinic is open to the public, offering hearing and speech evaluations, and speech therapy. It is the
only clinic in a 60-mile radius offering central auditory processing testing, which evaluates how the ear and
brain are working together to use auditory information.
“Our former space was cramped at 700 sq. ft., but the new area is a spacious 2,800 sq. ft. There is room to
grow and we have taken initial steps toward a master’s degree in speech-language pathology,” says Darah
Regal, chair. “Over the last five years our enrollment has increased steadily from 25 to 65 majors in 2012.
We’re delighted and impressed as we meet this year’s freshmen, with their animated curiosity to start
learning and growing in their chosen field.”
With their new facilities, the department is beginning to expand. The current program offers a bachelor’s and
a minor in speech-language pathology and audiology. The department’s proposal for a master’s program has
received approval from the Andrews University Program Development Review Committee (PDRC) and the
Graduate Council, and is being reviewed by Provost Andrea Luxton. The department is working on a proposal
for master’s program accreditation from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Alumni Homecoming Weekend is Sept. 27-30, 2012
Andrews University’s annual Alumni Homecoming Weekend will be held Sept. 27–30, 2012, with a variety of
events that are open to the community, alumni, staff, faculty and students. A full schedule and description of

Ribbon cutting ceremony and open house for Department of Speech-Language Pathology &
Audiology
The weekend begins with a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house for the newly renovated and expanded
Department of Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology in Bell Hall on Thursday, Sept. 27, at 4 p.m. It’s the
first event for the recently organized School of Health Professions, which includes all the health-related
academic departments at Andrews University. The event is free and open to the public, and free hearing
screenings will be offered.
Wes Christiansen Memorial Golf Outing
On Friday, Sept. 28, all are invited to participate in the Wes Christiansen Memorial Golf outing at Blackthorn
Golf Club in South Bend, Ind. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with the shotgun start at 9 a.m. The regular entry
fee is $80 ($60 for Andrews University students), which includes 18 holes of scramble golf with a cart,
continental breakfast, lunch, duffle bag and other prizes. Proceeds will go to the Alumni Scholarship fund.
RSVP is required.
Reception, Academic Tributes for Retiring Biology Professors
Friday’s events also include an alumni reception in the foyer of Buller Hall from 12:30–1:30 p.m. to honor the
retirements of biology professors Bill Chobotar, John Stout, Dennis Woodland and David Steen. Following the
reception, all are invited to attend the Administrative Appreciation for Biology Faculty Retirements and
Academic Tribute Presentations beginning at 1:30 p.m. in Newbold Auditorium of Buller Hall. RSVP for the
alumni reception and submit tributes, memories and best wishes to the retiring professors at
alumni.andrews.edu/biology.
25th Annual Homecoming Parade, International Flag Raising Ceremony
The 25th annual homecoming parade begins at 5 p.m. starting on West Campus Circle Drive in front of the
Seminary. Guests can enjoy free elephant ears, popcorn and cotton candy while watching the parade of
floats, marching bands and fire trucks. All are invited to attend. Immediately following the parade, join us in
celebrating diversity at the International Flag Raising Ceremony on the flag mall at 6:30 p.m. All are
encouraged to wear native dress and participate in both the parade and flagraising. Call 269-471-3345 to

Open Houses Across Campus
On Saturday, Sept. 29, explore the campus of Andrews University through a variety of open houses across
campus all occurring from 3–5 p.m. These include the Architecture Resource Center in the Architecture

White Library, the Department of Biology in Price Hall of the Science Complex, the Department of SpeechLanguage Pathology & Audiology in Bell Hall, James White Library’s 75th Anniversary tours, the Natural
History Museum in Price Hall of the Science Complex, the Institute of Archaeology and Siegfried H. Horn
Museum, Ruth Murdoch Elementary School, and the Undergraduate Learning Center: Buller & Nethery Halls.
Aviation Breakfast and Fly-In
Among the notable events on Sunday, Sept. 30, is the Aviation Breakfast and Fly-In from 8 a.m.-noon at the

Andrews University Airpark. Guests can enjoy a pancake breakfast before touring the airpark to see the fleet

5K Run/Walk & 10K Run/Fitness Expo
For those who enjoy some morning exercise, a 5K Run/Walk & 10K Run will begin at 9 a.m. at Johnson Gym.
Titled “Race to End the Status Quo,” proceeds from the event will go to AU Student Missions. The registration
fee is $15 or free for Andrews University students. T-shirts will also be available for $5.
Ride for AU
The weekend’s events will conclude Sunday with the 5th annual Ride for AU at 1 p.m. when motorcyclists can
enjoy a scenic trip through Southwest Michigan. If the 25-bike minimum is met, the ride will be escorted by

Campus Ministries Goes Mobile
The Office of Campus Ministries has gone mobile! Their mobile offices are a new initiative to bring their
ministry directly to the students of Andrews University.
From Monday-Thursday of the weeks of September 10-20, the chaplains and their support staff wheeled a
cart loaded with an electric teapot and an array of tea, apple cider, and hot chocolate and set up camp in one
of the campus lobbies. Beside their cart they placed a large sign announcing their motto, “Keep Calm and Put
the Kettle On,”—a phrase history students will recognize from its similarity to the World War II British catchphrase, “Keep Calm and Carry On.”
“It’s an easy way of saying, pull up a seat and let’s talk about something serious and wonderful– Jesus in
your life,” says Japhet De Oliveira, University chaplain. Each day, Campus Ministries set-up in a new area,
traveling to Buller Hall, Nethery Hall, Architecture North Studio, Physical Therapy Building, Harrigan Hall Main
Lobby, Bell Hall, Chan Shun Hall and the Seminary. By going to the students, they have the opportunity to
meet and talk with students who may not normally spend much time in the Campus Center where Campus
Ministries is located.
“We want to be where the people are,” says Jose Bourget, chaplain. “We get quite a bit of faculty, staff and
students who come to our offices, but there are so many more that we will now be able to make connections
with by being where they are.”
De Oliveira became impressed with the importance of going into the community under the influence of one of
his mentors. He realized that in order to connect with members, he needed to see them outside of church. “I
can’t preach, teach or connect unless I have a pulse for the community,” he says.
So far the outreach has been well received. Some students who had never heard of the Office of Campus

Ministries or never had an opportunity to meet the chaplains were able to interact with them. Many people
expressed their appreciation for the chaplains’ efforts. One department chair even called the office to ensure
they would be coming to her department. “We have had some great conversations with students we would
have never met,” says De Oliveira. “Insight into their journey. Clarity on their needs.”
The chaplains intend to repeat the mobile office tour again later in the semester, as well in selected other
locations on individual days. They hope those they meet will be encouraged by their encounter to come to the
Office of Campus Ministries for longer discussions.
“I think it’s a really good idea,” says Christina Dunn, a junior animal science major. “I was blessed.”
The mobile offices are one implementation of the new Faith Development program, which includes three
elements: Program to Presence, Theory to Tangible, and Control to Creative. The mobile office is an initiative
of the first element, Program to Presence. With this initiative, the chaplains hope to make Campus Ministries
a more palpable presence on campus and in the lives of students, faculty and staff.
Some other initiatives the Office of Campus Ministries is undertaking include submitting regular articles to the
Student Movement, using live texting during Chapels and promoting the availability of the chaplains for
discussion, as well as regularly walking around campus to connect with students.

Eat Local Challenge Is On Tuesday, Sept. 25
Can we feed hundreds an entire meal made of only locally sourced food? At Andrews University’s Dining
Services, the answer is yes, we can. On Tuesday, Sept. 25, from 11 a.m.–2:30 p.m., Dining Services will
take part in Bon Appétit Management Company’s “Eat Local Challenge” by serving up lunch made entirely
from ingredients sourced within 150 miles of Berrien Springs, Mich., with a vast majority of the ingredients
sourced from the Andrews University Farm. The Eat Local Challenge is open to the public. Regular lunch
prices apply, $7.75 (plus tax) for all you-care-to-eat. View the menu at the link below the photo.
The local farms and suppliers sourced for the “Eat Local Challenge” include: Andrews University Farm
(Berrien Springs, Mich.); Leduc Blueberries (Paw Paw, Mich.); Michigan Sugar Company (Bay City, Mich.),
Total Health Inc. (Buchanan, Mich.); Todd Griener Farms (Hart, Mich.) Windmill Island (Holland, Mich.);
Guggisberg (Middlebury, Ind.); Rosewood Acres (Lansing, Mich.), Windmill Island (Holland, Mich.); Zeeland
Foods (Zeeland, Mich.); Country Life (Paw Paw, Mich.); Carlson-Arbogast Farms (Lansing, Mich.) and Dave
Pagel Farm (Berrien Springs, Mich.). Additionally, the breads were all locally baked by Apple Valley Bakery
(Berrien Springs, Mich.).
This is the first year Gil Bell, owner of Total Health Inc., in Buchanan, has supplied produce for the event.
“Eating local actually helps produce a much higher quality nutrient value in our food. The produce doesn’t
have to travel across the county, losing nutrients with age, or be sprayed with preservatives in order to
extend shelf life.”
This marks the third year Andrews University’s Dining Services has participated in the Eat Local Challenge. It
is just one way Dining Services is accepting Andrews University President Niels-Erik Andreasen’s challenge to
make Andrews the healthiest university in the United States. “Eating local has become a mainstream of our

culture. It’s more popular than it used to be. But having an opportunity to eat a locally sourced meal is a
different story,” says Jonathan Mark Daniels, general manager of Dining Services at Andrews University. “We
want everyone to come and experience not just a component piece of a meal that is local, but an entire meal.
We are taking �eating local’ from a conversation to a reality.”
One of the new locally sourced foods for this year is organic tofu from Rosewood Acres in Lansing, Mich. “Our
student body loves tofu. They’ll choose it over, or along with, their eggs—scrambled eggs and tofu, or adding
tofu to their omelets,” says Linda Briengar, executive chef at Dining Services. “Another great local source is
our own Andrews Farm. They are providing things such as eggplant, butternut squash, yellow squash,
carnival squash, acorn squash, basil, cilantro, parsley and sage. Andrews Farm is also providing us with what
I’m calling �heirloom peppers,’ which includes four different kinds of peppers: pika, pueblo, Cheyenne and
jalapeño.”
Bon Appétit Management, the onsite restaurant company that manages Andrews University’s Office of Dining
Services, has over 400 Bon AppГ©tit restaurants and cafГ©s across the country participating in the Eat Local
Challenge. As part of their partnerships with college and corporate campuses, Bon AppГ©tit works to educate
communities about the value of low-carbon diets and local purchasing, and the connection between food and
climate change. Bon AppГ©tit has been managing Andrews University Dining Services since June 2010.

Take a Survey to Support Development of the Campus Master
Plan
The Campus Design Studio from the School of Architecture, Art & Design conducted the first campus planning
workshop on Sunday, Sept. 9, in the Hoosier and Lincoln Rooms of Dining Services. More than 75 students,
faculty, staff, alumni, and community residents attended the two-hour workshop, which was opened with
some motivating remarks by President Andreasen. The event included an open-house presentation of more
than 40 large-scale maps, diagrams, and outlines illustrating existing campus assets, challenges and known

BERRIEN SPRINGS - With four different institutions represented, the logistics of rehearsing can get a little bit complicated for
members of the American Piano Quintet.

However, for musicians used to performing at a high level, the solution is simpler than it might seem, in violinist Carla Trynchuk's perspective.
"Obviously, when we prepare for this, there's a lot of individual work that goes on,
there's a lot of core study, so when we get together things are just ready to fall in
place," Trynchuk says by telephone from her Berrien Springs home. "Then we
work on the interpretive details - what we want to bring out in the music, (and) the
types of conservations we have between the instruments. That's the kind of thing
we look to do when we get together."
For pianist Chi Yong Yun, everything's about refining the individual nuances of
each piece as the actual concert date draws closer.
"The word that comes to mind is, 'a lot of discipline' - I started playing at an early
age, when I heard my sister practicing, and I started playing what I heard," Yun
says. "I was around 3 or 4."
Trynchuk and Yun both teach at Andrews University, where they'll also perform
Saturday as part of the American Piano Quintet, whose other members are
Rudolf Haken (violin), Jeffrey Lastrapes (cello) and Renee Skerik (viola).
Haken is on the University of Illinois's music faculty, while Skerik is a viola professor at Texas Tech University and a violist for the Botticelli
String Quartet.
Lastrapes is a former Oklahoma State University faculty member who recently released a CD of sonatas by Rachmaninoff and Chopin. Since
1996, he's also served on the cello and chamber music faculty at Interlochen Center for the Arts and is an assistant professor of cello at
Texas Tech.

"I'm looking forward to performing with these wonderful colleagues. We have lots of different backgrounds represented, and yet we all do very
much the same thing," Trynchuk says. "We all perform a lot and we all teach a lot. These are our dual passions."

Suite," a piece based on the writings of 6th-century philosopher Lao Tsu. After a brief intermission, the quintet will close its performance with
Antonin Dvorak's "Piano Quintet in A Major, Op. 81."

Trnychuk expects the Haken piece to represent a musical peak of the program, even though she won't be playing on it herself.
"We went through a number of ideas (for the program). We wanted a couple of piano quintets that would be contrasting," Trynchuk says.
"Brahms, of course, is rich and dark in color and the Czech composer (Dvorak) is an audience pleaser. The most unusual work (of the night)
will be Rudolf's - it's a very cool work."
"The pieces that we're going to perform cover a wide range of emotion, between the instruments," Yun agrees. "With classical music, it's
something that takes a lot of discipline and a lot of training. It's not something you're going pick up in the period of a week or a month."
While she's looking forward to playing all the pieces, Yun is especially excited about the Brahms selection. "His writing for piano is very
complex - it's challenging, but it's musically fulfilling," she says.
The quintet's members also will give a master class to Andrews' string instrument students at 3:30 p.m. Friday, in Buller Hall's Newbold
Auditorium. Haken, Skerik and Lastrapes are expected to lead this endeavor, which is open to the public as well, Trynchuk says.
"A master class is when you have students perform, and have the master teacher work with the student," she says. "It's basically like a public
lesson."

Titled Homosexuality, Marriage, and the Church: Biblical, Counseling, and Religious Liberty Issues, the nearly 600-page
book was released in early August. It is a collection of 14 major essays on a range of topics, and an additional six
personal testimonies from individuals who have struggled with homosexuality in their personal lives. The content of the
book, including the testimonies, is material largely based on presentations at a conference on the same subject held at
Andrews University and sponsored by various entities of the Adventist Church in October 2009.

“Much as it might like to, the church can no longer evade questions about
homosexuality and same-sex marriage,” says Nicholas P. Miller, lead editor
of the work, along with Roy E. Gane and H. Peter Swanson, all of the
Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary at Andrews. “Society, with
increasing stridency, is forcing Christians to confront these topics,” Miller
says.
Miller points to the several states whose legislatures have enacted same-sex
marriage provisions, sometimes against the convictions of their own citizens.
He notes that this fall at least two states, Maryland and Washington, will have
referendums on election ballots, initiated by citizens seeking to overturn the
same-sex marriage laws recently enacted.
“Consider the strange controversy and apparent outrage that erupted when
the owner of a national fast-food chain recently expressed his support for
traditional marriage,” Miller said. “It was the same position held until very
recently by the president of the United States. And the media-driven reaction
is an indication of how efforts are being made to shift public sentiment on this
issue. Meanwhile, a film documentary affirming the gay lifestyle among
Adventists is being heavily promoted by some within the church. Through all
of this Adventists must have a clear understanding of all the issues at stake,
and they are significant.”
Ronald Knott, director of Andrews University Press, notes that along with the biblical and religious liberty issues, the
book makes a passionate case for the highest level of pastoral love and support for those Christians who, he said, “may
have been lured down a dangerous spiritual path by charming but false arguments from Scripture and political history,
coming from outside and inside the church.”
Following a preface and general introduction, various essays and articles are divided into four sections. The first
addresses the Old and New Testament biblical material on homosexuality, with articles by Gane, Richard Davidson, and

Miroslav Kis, all of Andrews, and Robert A. J. Gagnon of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. The second section
addresses legal and religious liberty issues, with essays by Miller, Alan J. Reinach from the Pacific Union Conference,
Gerald Chipeur, a partner with the Canadian law firm Miller Thompson LLP, Scot Zentner from Cal State, San
Bernadino, and Gary Wood from Andrews University. The counseling section features articles by Stanton Jones of
Wheaton College, Mark Yarhouse of Regent University, Carlos Fayard of Loma Linda University, and Inge Anderson,
founder of a ministry to homosexuals. The fourth section includes personal testimonies from several Christians who
have lived and struggled with homosexuality. An appendix reproduces the various official statements relevant to
homosexuality issued through the years by the Adventist Church.
In addition to his teaching responsibility as associate professor of church history at Andrews, Miller is also director of
the university’s International Religious Liberty Institute. On October 6 the institute will sponsor a daylong forum on the
political, religious, and social issues regarding same-sex marriage. The event will be held at the Spencerville
Seventh-day Adventist Church in Spencerville, Maryland. The forum, planned in the context of Maryland’s ballot
referendum to overturn the state’s same-sex marriage law, will draw attention to the issues and to the new book, and
will feature panel discussions and a sermon on Adventists and social issues by Bill Knott, editor and executive publisher

Eat Local Challenge At Andrews U Next Week
Next week will be the Eat Local Challenge at Andrews University in Berrien Springs. On Tuesday, the university's Dining Services will serve up a lunch made up of
only locally grown produce. Nothing in the meal will come from farther away than 150 miles, and providers include farms and bakeries from Berrien Springs,
Buchanan, Paw Paw, and Holland. The meal will be offered at Andrews U from eleven AM to two-30, and the public is welcome to try it. The cost is seven dollars
and 75 cents. The idea of the Eat Local Challenge is to promote healthy food choices.

BERRIEN SPRINGS - Andrews University's annual Alumni Homecoming Weekend will be Sept. 27-30, with events open to
the community, alumni, staff, faculty and students.

The weekend begins with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house for the renovated and expanded Department of Speech-Language
Pathology & Audiology in Bell Hall at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27. The event is free and open to the public, and free hearing screenings will be
offered.
On Friday, Sept. 28, all are invited to participate in the Wes Christiansen Memorial
Golf outing at Blackthorn Golf Club in South Bend. Registration begins at 8 a.m.
with the shotgun start at 9 a.m. The regular entry fee is $80 and $60 for Andrews
University students. Proceeds will go to the Alumni Scholarship fund. RSVP is
required.
Friday's events also include an alumni reception in the foyer of Buller Hall from
12:30-1:30 p.m. to honor the retirements of biology professors Bill Chobotar, John
Stout, Dennis Woodland and David Steen.
The 25th annual homecoming parade begins at 5 p.m. on West Campus Circle
Drive in front of the Seminary. Immediately following the parade, there will be the
International Flag Raising Ceremony on the flag mall at 6:30 p.m. All are
encouraged to wear native dress and participate in both the parade and
flagraising. Call 471-3345 to sign up and reserve your flag.
On Saturday, Sept. 29, visitors can explore the campus of Andrews University
through open houses from 3-5 p.m.
On Sunday, Sept. 30, the Aviation Breakfast and Fly-In will take place 8 a.m.-noon at the Andrews University Airpark. Guests can enjoy a
pancake breakfast before touring the airpark to see the fleet of planes and visit the Flight Simulation Center. The price is $7 for adults, $3 for
children ages 10 and under.
A 5K Run/Walk & 10K Run will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday at Johnson Gym. Proceeds from the "Race to End the Status Quo" will go to Andrews

For many years Aubrey Hopkins has worked in professions that
help families and children. Now, he is in his third year teaching
literacy classes for inmates in the Berrien County jail.

The 54-year-old Berrien Springs resident grew up in Macon, Ga., attended
Oakwood University in Huntsville, Ala., and has a background in social work. He
worked in the alternative education program at Coloma schools and in the Benton
Harbor school system. In addition to teaching literacy in the jail, Hopkins is an
examiner for the General Educational Development program, which allows people
to get the equivalent of a high school diploma. The literacy and GED programs
have no connection.
Herald-Palladium Staff Writer Scott Aiken recently talked with Hopkins about his
work in the jail.

My involvement goes back probably about 20 years. I worked in a children's facility.
I worked as a juvenile probation officer. I worked with families and children, with
child abuse and neglect. And I often wondered, where along the continuum can we
actually help these children, because in many cases they were so angry because
of the things that happened to them during their childhood. I thought, maybe on the
adult end, when they are adults and more mature, that maybe something could be
done. It was from that perspective that I involved myself into the local jail and
teaching the literacy program.
Is it common to see people in jail who are illiterate or nearly so?
Yes. I taught special education at Benton Harbor High School for about five years.
Every once in a while I would have a student show up and they would be in the
11th or 12th grade and tell me they couldn't read.

I couldn't quite understand it at the time, but after talking to them I found in some
cases they moved every six months. And so they just missed different elements of
reading. And because they were quiet students they were passed along. It was
from that point that I learned about the need for literacy (instruction).
Do the people who sign up for instruction tend to be good students? That is, are
they serious about learning?

Yes. Sgt. (Chris) Aungst screens the students before I ever get them. He sends the
most qualified and the best students, students who are eager to learn, students
who want to change their direction in life. I can't say, in the three years since I've
been doing the literacy class, that I've gotten more than one student that we had to
dismiss or delete from the class.
Most of the students who come are very eager to learn. They're willing to challenge
themselves, and they're willing to work through the obstacles that come from
having literacy deficiencies.

People are in jail for no more than a year and often for shorter periods. Does that
allow students enough time to make progress?
That's kind of difficult to answer because some students make progress. For other students who are starting below second-grade reading level
it's going to take a lot more than the allotted time in which they're in the jail. We do the best we can with the time with English as a second
language, using those skills that are applicable, and also with Literacy America. One of our favorite times of the day is when we read The
Herald-Palladium. I'm not sure of the reading level for the newspaper, but in many cases it has been a starting point for our students. They're
interested in the local news, and so it works out for us. Classes are twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays, between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
What are some of the rewards and frustrations of teaching prisoners?
Actually there have been very few frustrations. A few of the prisoners who are anxious and have not fully adjusted to being in prison bring that
anxiety into the classroom, and sometimes it frustrates the learning process. So we have to deal with their issues before we move on. The
rewards are incredible. To see them beginning to learn, want to learn, want to acquire skills, go to higher education institutions, making the
effort, putting in an (application) for financial aid, pursuing their GED and passing the GED.
In most cases I rarely see any of the students once they are released. I have seen a few. I saw one at Lake Michigan College who's now
enrolled. I talked to others who attributed the class to an awakening for them. They realize, "I can do something in life, I can make something of
myself, and if I apply certain principles I will move further in life." This is a great project that Sheriff (Paul) Bailey has instituted, and I thank him
for making the opportunity available.

Michigan is home to five of the 204 top national universities in the 2013
U.S. News & World Report "Best Colleges" rankings, with headliners
University of Michigan and Michigan State University each sliding
just one spot from last year.
The U.S. News report released today ranks UM at No. 29, with a score of
74 out of 100 and a six-year student graduation rate of 90 percent. That's
down from a No. 28 ranking in the 2012 edition, which Michigan State
moved from No. 71 to 72 this year with an overall score of 54 and a
six-year graduation rate of 77 percent.

Representing Canada, Germany, Korea and the United States, the highly acclaimed musicians of the American Piano Quintet
represent today's American cultural landscape. Their performance at the Howard Performing Arts Center at 8:30 p.m. on
Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, features works by Johannes Brahms, Antonin DvoГЎk, and the quintet's very own Rudolf Haken.
Andrews UniversityDepartment of Music faculty, Canadian violinist Carla Trynchuk and Korean-born pianist Chi Yong Yun, are
the two local residents in the ensemble. Violinist RudolfHaken is on the music faculty of the University of Illinois. Renee
Skerik is a professor of viola at Texas Tech University and is also the violist of Botticelli String Quartet. Cellist
Jeffrey Lastrapes is a former faculty member of Oklahoma State University and most recently released a recording of sonatas
by Rachmaninoff and Chopin.
The program consists of three works of music, beginning with Piano Quintet in F Minor, Op. 34 by Johannes Brahms. Rudolf
Haken's composition is the second piece, entitled Tao Suite. This piece isbased on the writings of Lao Tsu, 6th century BC.
It features a five-stringviolin, cello and piano. Following an intermission, the quintet performs Piano Quintet in A Major,

U.S. News and World Report released its 2013 college ranking list, featuring the top-ranked colleges in four categories:
national universities, national liberal arts colleges, regional universities and regional colleges.
The University of New Mexico tied for the 179th spot among national universities, ranking alongside Azusa Pacific
University, Edgewood College, Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and the University of Missouri in Kansas City. New
Mexico State University tied for the 189th spot with Andrews University, Ashland University, Montana State University,
Northern Illinois University, University of Colorado in Denver and others.
Universities in the national university ranking offer a full range of undergraduate majors, master’s and Ph.D. programs and
focus on faculty research. There were 331 national universities in the category. Several were unranked or unpublished.
New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology tied for the 20th spot in the regional universities West category. New
Mexico Highlands University, Western New Mexico University and Eastern New Mexico University were either
unpublished or unranked. There were 139 schools in the regional universities West category.
Institutions are divided based on their mission. The institutions are ranked on up to 16 indicators of academic excellence.
Some of the indicators are assessment by administrators at peer institutions, student retention, faculty resources, student
selectivity, alumni donations and financial resources, retention rates and class size. Each factor was assigned a weight, and
the colleges and universities in each category are ranked against peers, based on their composite weighted scores.

Andrews hosts electronics recycling event
<
Folks from all across Michiana traveled to Berrien
Springs Wednesday to help the environment, and
get rid of all the electronic clutter piling up in their
homes.
Andrews University, along with Green Earth
Recycling, hosted their annual recycling event
Wednesday evening.
The four-hour drop-off gave community members
and area businesses a way to get rid of all their old
gizmos and gadgets the right way.
People brought out computers, tools, TV's and even
curling irons to dispose of on campus.
Some came from as far away as Elkhart just to make sure their unwanted devices do not end up in the
landfill.
“We just take recycling very seriously. We try to do what we can, when we can, and I've been waiting for
a major drop-off,” said Marian Seevers, Elkhart resident. “We have been setting aside computer
monitors, old TV's, basically anything with a cord, and it has been stockpiling for several months, and
today was the day to just load it up and bring it in.”
If you missed out, the college will be holding another e-recycling event in mid-April of 2012.

Elly Economou's Estate Sale Taking Place This Week
The estate of Elly Economou, a long-time professor at Andrews University, will be available at a tag sale. Per
Dr. Economou’s wishes, all proceeds from her estate will be added to her and her mother’s two endowed
scholarship funds.
The tag sale is open to the public September 17-21, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The sale is taking place at Economou's home located at 8785 University Blvd., Berrien Springs. The sale is

Andrews University
The Association of Adventist Women will be celebrating 30 years of advocating for gender equality in the
Seventh-day Adventist Church at its annual conference October 4-6, 2012, at Andrews University, Berrien
Springs, Michigan.
The theme for this year’s timely conference is “Harmony in Diversity.” The conference keynote speaker will
be Hyveth Williams; the Sabbath sermon at Pioneer Memorial Church will be given by Dwight Nelson, senior
pastor; and a variety of break-out sessions and panel discussions will feature Lourdes Morales-Gudmundsson,
Jane Thayer, Iris Landa, Bonnie Dwyer, Nancy Vyhmeister, Viviane Haenni, Gary
Patterson, Larry Geraty, Linda Wysong Becker, and others.

ArtPlace
ArtPlace is a collaboration of major foundations, federal agencies, and financial institutions dedicated to
accelerating creative placemaking across the United States. ArtPlace believes that art, culture, and creativity
expressed powerfully through place can create vibrant communities, thus increasing the desire and the
economic opportunity for people to thrive in place. Grants and loans are provided to collaborations involving
arts organizations, artists, and designers working with local and national partners to produce a

transformative impact on community vibrancy. Priority is given to projects that enjoy strong local buy-in and
will occur at places already showing signs of momentum, integrate with a community’s economic
development and community revitalization strategy, and have the potential to attract additional private and
public support to the community. ArtPlace gives some emphasis to applications from selected localities;
however, applications are encouraged from urban and rural regions all across the U.S. Letters of inquiry will
be accepted from September 17 through November 1, 2012. Visit the ArtPlace website to download the

Rural Programs in Selected States Supported
Laura Jane Musser Fund: Rural Initiative Program
The Laura Jane Musser Fund encourages collaborative and participatory efforts among citizens in
communities in Colorado, Hawaii, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wyoming. Through the Rural Initiative
Program, the Fund supports programs that will help to strengthen individual rural towns in the targeted
states in a number of civic areas, including economic development, business preservation, arts and
humanities, public space improvements, and education. The applicant community must have a population of
10,000 or fewer and must be able to demonstrate the rural characteristics of their location and support from
a diverse cross-section of community members and institutions. Planning grants of up to $5,000 and
implementation grants of up to $25,000 are provided. The application deadline is November 7, 2012. Specific
grant guidelines and application procedures are available on the Fund’s website.

Adventist Forum presents Cognitive Genesis: The Impact of Adventist K-12 Schools on Students. The
discussion is led by Jerome Thayer, Ph.D., on Sabbath, September 22, 2012, at 3:30 p.m., in the Garber
Amphitheater of Chan Shun Hall on the campus of Andrews University. All are welcome to join in the
discussion.
About the Topic
Seventh-day Adventist educators have long maintained that their students achievement test scores (Iowa
Test of Basic Skills scores), pass rates, and college matriculation percentages consistently outpace
most public school and even other private school systems.
Cognitive Genesis is the first division-wide (United States, Canada, and Bermuda) study to assess Adventist
academics in elementary and secondary schools.
Working together with the North American Division and the Unions involved, the Cognitive Genesis Project at
La Sierra University gathered information from surveys of teachers, administrators, students, and parents
about factors that are related to academic achievement, including uniquely Adventist ones. These survey
responses along with the standardized test results for students in Grades 3-9 and 11 provide the basis for
establishing an accurate documented picture of elementary and secondary Adventist academic achievement.

Car key Found between Admin building and the Library
A car key was found on the walkway located between the Administration Building and the James White
Library. The key was handed over to a staff in the Division of Enrollment Management, located in the
Administration Building. The key will be passed on to the respective departments on campus which deal with
lost and found items.
If you have lost a car key, you can check with the departments that deal with the lost and found items or you
can reach me at junway75@yahoo.co.uk and I can direct you to the person who turned the key in.

Spring Semester is almost over and it’s time to think about wrapping up another year. As you sort, pack and
prepare for summer, please take note if you have lost your keys, cell phone, ID card, glasses, sunglasses,

Sailboat for Sale
Sailing is great fun! Sailing uses very little gas!! It is a great recreational pastime. A
Venture 2-22 trailer-able Sailboat is for sale. This features the pop-top so there is standing
room in the cabin. 3 Sails included are the Main, Genoa and Jib.
Will sell for $1775 with 5 hp outboard or $1575 without the outboard.
Boat includes trailer with new tires and bearings.
The boat has a crank up keel so it can maneuver in shallow water.
Specs say it sleeps 5 -- but they better be real good friends or family with small children.
Boat seems to be very solid. You need to see it to appreciate it.

Part-time Moving Position
Position available for moving/deliveries.
Where? Erhard Furniture, Northwest Side of Berrien Springs (6681 M-139 Berrien Springs)
Pay? $15 an hour + any tips
Requirements? Need to be able to move furniture (with other workers) and drive/operate large trucks
(smaller than semi's). Truck requires chauffeur license, but if you don't have one, we can organize to help
you get it.
Hours? Hours are irregular depending on jobs available. Preferably a spouse of a student or recent graduate
with daytime availability. Just let us know when you're available.

Graphic Designer Needed
ADRA International has a job vacancy for a Graphic Designer.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Graphic Designer, under the direction of the Design and Production Director, designs and produces a
wide variety of marketing and communication material such as brochures, direct mail, display graphics,
online materials, and specialty items. This position is also responsible for the production management needs
of the Design Studio.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor of Arts in graphic design or a related discipline.
• Over two years experience or equivalent combination of formal education/training and experience.
• Extensive knowledge and experience in a Macintosh/Microsoft-based design and production system and
updated software.
• Proficiency in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat (and other Creative Suite ancillary applications) on
a Macintosh.
• Candidates with exceptional organizational and project/print management skills highly preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Demonstrated high level of creativity as reflected in a broad-based portfolio.
• Demonstrated sound marketing judgment as seen in their design decisions.
RESPONSIBILITIES :
• Manages the production schedule and sends out project schedule updates as appropriate.
• Prepares and conducts weekly production meeting.
• Develop specifications for and manages the print buying and mailing services process.
• Manage and maintain the archive of the approval process.
• Work with mail house on receipt of materials and reviewing proofs in a timely manner.
• Take ownership of assigned projects and see them through to a successful and timely conclusion, providing
realistic and creative solutions to challenges such as budget restrictions, time constraints, market positioning,

College/Working Family Needs Car
College (Andrews University) family of three is looking for a second car to facilitate daily commute to work,
school, and daycare. Mom is completing last year of nursing school and works at a hospital in Mishawaka, IN.
Dad has finished his degree and will substitute teach throughout the Michiana area. With potential for such
lengthy commutes, the need for two cars is extremely high; however, the funds are low. For this reason, we
are hoping for a donated vehicle, but are willing to provide owner with minimal compensation. If you can
