Maureen Gouveia - 780.438.7060 SOW MUCH LOVE CAMPAIGN From the desk of Reverend Matthew Hysell, MA MTh TODAY IS SOLIDARITY SUNDAY! How can I pray the Lord’s Prayer better? (Part IX) The SEVENTH PETITION of the Lord’s Prayer and the last one is “…but deliver us from evil.” Like the other petitions, it is commonly misunderstood. This last petition is somewhat ambiguous because the Greek word used for ‘evil’ can be read as either neuter or masculine. If it is neuter, it refers to a kind of ‘generic’ evil— sin. If it is intended to read as a masculine noun, it would then refer to the enemy of our salvation—the fallen angels. It could well be both: We pray for deliverance from wickedness and from the wicked angels. It is also helpful to understand the Lord’s Prayer as particularly related to the End of all Things. There are various evils that afflict us, some major, some minor. At the same time, Catholics ought to be aware that the Magisterium teaches that there will come a time in the future when the Church will be subjected to a final, cataclysmic struggle, and by praying “deliver us from evil,” we are praying on behalf of the Church that she would be protected from the ‘worst possible scenario.’ The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains: “Before Christ's second coming the Church must pass through a final trial that will shake the faith of many believers” (¶675). The Catechism goes on to say that many Catholics will abandon the faith for a ‘pseudomessianism’ in which they will look away from Jesus Christ for alternative solutions to the world’s problems. Pope Francis has spoken of this many times by his use of the words “ideological colonization.” By praying the Seventh Petition, we pray against being duped by false messianic claims that someone or something other than Christ promises a better solution to the problems of life. More immediately, however, this petition is also a prayer for the grace of final perseverance, otherwise known as the grace of a happy death. We know that in order to be saved, our souls must be in the state of sanctifying grace—which can be forfeited easily if we leave grave sin unrepented. As we get older, it is also easy to grow hardened in our obduracy about certain things. In praying for the ‘grace of final perseverance’ with the words “but deliver us from evil,” we are asking that the Lord spare us whatever final efforts will be made by ‘the world, the flesh, or the devil’ to induce us to shake off our faith before we step into eternity. It is only God who can help us remain faithful to the end; humans simply do not possess the strength to do it. The Council of Trent teaches: “If anyone says, that the justified, either is able to persevere, without the special help of God [i.e. without the grace of final perseverance], in the justice received; or that, with that help, he is not able; let him be anathema.” So in the final petition, we pray against evil in general, against the snares of the wicked angels, for protection during the Church’s final trial, and for the grace to remain faithful to Jesus until the end. Pope Francis ends his Joy of the Gospel with this prayer to Mary: Star of the new evangelization, help us to bear radiant witness to communion, service, ardent and generous faith, justice and love of the poor, that the joy of the Gospel may reach to the ends of the Earth, illuminating even the fringes of our world. Today, on the Fifth Sunday of Lent, Solidarity Sunday, we join the Holy Father in praying that we may all be radiant witnesses and that through our support of DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE, the joy of the Gospel may indeed illuminate even the darkest corners of our world! The Knit, Pray 'n Crochet Group" IMPORTANT MESSAGE: YOUTH MINISTER - ANGELA MCCORMICK - ANNOUNCES RESIGNATION Dear youth, young adults, families and parishioners, It is with great difficulty that I announce that I am stepping down as St. Theresa’s Youth and Young Adult minister. My last day in the office will be Thursday, April 23, 2015. This has not been an easy decision for me to make as I love St. Theresa’s parish very much. I came to this decision after much prayer and consideration, under the guidance of my spiritual director as well as through discussions with my family and my significant other, Jeremy Lott. Some of you are aware I was discerning and had applied to be a chaplain in the Canadian Forces. I have since postponed my application to the Canadian Forces chaplaincy in order to focus on discerning marriage with Jeremy. As such, it is best for me to move back to the West coast so I can be closer to Jeremy and family during the marriage discernment process. With regards to questions you likely have about what this means for St. Theresa’s, Confirmation and our youth ministry. I will attempt to address them here. First off, what does this mean for our youth ministry? Youth events will continue on as normal, even after I have left. St. Theresa’s core teams and volunteer leaders are very competent and will continue to organize and run our Edge and Life Teen youth events until the end of the school year in June. They are able to run things with or without a new youth minister in place. What about Confirmation? Nothing is cancelled. In May, we will still be having our student-sponsor Confirmation retreat on May 16, and Confirmation Mass with Archbishop Smith on May 17. Everything is moving forward. The scheduling is all planned and there will be a well-organized leader running things on those two dates. So do not be afraid! You may also be wondering if there is going to be an opportunity to say goodbye? Yes! Most certainly! We have two different goodbye events organized. There’s a goodbye cake celebration in St. Theresa’s parish foyer after every Sunday Mass on April 11 and 12. And there is also a Goodbye Potluck on Saturday, April 18 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm in St. Theresa’s parish hall (RSVP at http://bit.do/goodbyepotluck ). All are welcome and invited. I would love to see you. I thank our Lord for providing me with so many opportunities and experiences here at St. Theresa’s parish. I love and cherish St. Theresa’s parish community, in particular her many youth and families, whom I will continue to pray for and will sorely miss. Our youth hold a very special place in my heart. They are like my own kids and it has been such a gift to watch them grow over the years. St. Theresa’s is beginning the diligent search for a new youth minister. Your prayers are most appreciated during this process and time of transition, in particular that the Lord will guide the right person to St. Theresa’s, to continue helping our young people draw closer to Christ and make the joy of the Lord their strength (Neh 8:10). Sincerely, Angela McCormick PART-TIME JOB OPENING FOR STUDENTS St. Theresa’s Roman Catholic Parish has a job opening for students to work part-time (some evenings and/or Saturdays) in our Parish Office in the area of Front Desk Reception/Office Clerical. Robbie MacDougall of the Archdiocese of St. Boniface from Sunday, March 29, 7:00 pm until Sunday, April 5, 10:00 am. Together we will ‘journey with Jesus’ through the events that led to his passion, death and resurrection and reflect on the New Life that Christ offers his disciples. Music, song, powerful liturgies, presentations, silence, reconciliation and a time to rest through prayer are all a part of this week of retreat. Come for a day, the Triduum or the full week.
