Prayer of Confession
Let us pray
Loving God, at this time we remember that going up to
Jerusalem cost Jesus everything. We come before you,
conscious of the way religious words and holy phrases
may slip easily from our lips and our hearts. What do
we really know of your mountainous truth, your rockhard integrity, the depth of your suffering for love of
us all?
Forgive us for the shallowness of our faith and the
timidity of our following; forgive us for the ready
excuses we make for going our own way and claiming
it as yours.
May your Holy Spirit turn us around again and point
us in your direction. Keep us committed to you and
what is good, in Jesus’ name we pray. Amen..

Shout to the Lord

My Jesus, my Savior, Lord, there is none like You,
All of my days, I want to praise
the wonders of your mighty love;
My Comfort, my Shelter, Tower of refuge and strength;
Let ev’ry breath, all that I am,
never cease to worship You.
Shout to the Lord, all the earth, let us sing
power and majesty, Praise to the King;
Mountains bow down and the seas will roar
At the sound of your name.
I sing for joy at the work of Your hands,
Forever I’ll love You, forever I’ll stand;
Nothing compares to the promise I have in You.

Tenebrae
A Service of Shadows
The service of Tenebrae, meaning “darkness” or “shadows,” has been
practiced by the church since medieval times. Once a service for the
monastic community, Tenebrae later became an important part of the
worship of the common folk during Holy Week. We join Christians of
many generations throughout the world in using the liturgy of Tenebrae.
Tenebrae is a prolonged meditation on Christ’s suffering. Readings trace
the story of Christ’s passion, music portrays his pathos, and the power of
silence and darkness suggests the drama of this momentous day. As
lights are extinguished, we ponder the depth of Christ’s suffering and
death; we remember the cataclysmic nature of his sacrifice as we hear the
overwhelming sound of the “strepitus;” and through the return of the
small but persistent flame of the Christ candle at the conclusion of the
service, we anticipate the joy of ultimate victory.
Thursday we begin our Maundy Service with prayer, song, a powerful
confession, and an assurance of pardon. We will receive Communion,
giving thanks to the Lord our God for his perfect gift of Jesus Christ, and
participating in the sacrament he instituted at our Lord’s Last Supper on
Maundy Thursday.
After we have prepared ourselves with the bread and cup of Christ, we
are ready to enter a night of shadows and darkening of lights. Ten
readings will be shared, until Christ has died; ten candles will be
extinguished, until all is dark. An earthquake of sound from our organ
will signal Christ’s death and all light will be gone.
In the darkest night, there remains yet God’s power, forever.
A light will shine….
