Greek Orthodox Archdiocese Schools
National Schools Event
St. George College recently hosted the annual Greek Orthodox Archdiocese Schools - 2012
National Schools Event.
Some 350 senior students from St George College (SA), St Spyridon College (NSW), St
Euphemia College (NSW), All Saints Grammar School (NSW), St Andrew’s Grammar
School (WA), St John's College (VIC) and Oakleigh Grammar (VIC) from our Greek
Orthodox Archdiocese Schools took part in this annual event where they competed for the
Greek Orthodox Archdiocese Championships in a variety of sports. In addition, students took
part in the Spoken Arts Festival where students performed poetry and prose recitation,
dialogues and theatre skits Modern Greek.
The significance of this event is best articulated by His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos,
Primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, in His Foreword in the PINAX
Volume 1, “The Greek Australian Sports Hall of Fame”.
“One may not immediately realize the connection between Church and sport. And yet, the
relationship derives from the very essence of each of them. To “strive” and to struggle are
the quintessence of Church and sport, and the original Greek term “athlos” means an
achievement, not only in sporting activities, but also in moral endeavours”.
Our students also attended the St. George Church for the traditional Thanksgiving Service
which was officiated by his Grace Bishop Nikandros of Doryleon, The Very Reverend Father
Diogenis Patsouris, Father Kon Skoumbourdis, Father Peter Photakis and Decan Michael
Psaromatis
We congratulate all students who took part in this worthwhile event and for their conduct
befitting students of our College’s.

Board Nominations
As you might know the operations of St George College are
governed by a Board of Governors. The Board comprises
persons appointed to serve for a term of two years with the
approval and Blessing of His Eminence Archbishop
Stylianos on the recommendation of the Executive
Committee of the Community and Parish of St George.
The High Court ruled that the national school chaplaincy
program is constitutionally invalid because it exceeds the
Commonwealth's executive funding powers. The High
Court did however rule that the case did not impact on the
freedom of religion, unanimously dismissing Mr Williams's
claim that school chaplains' religious position breached the
constitution. The constitution says that "no religious test
shall be required as a qualification for any office or public
trust under the Commonwealth”. Whilst the direct impact
of this decision relates to the chaplains program the indirect
impact may be much more significant given that the High
Court’s decision does go to the reach of executive power of
the government of the day as granted by Section 61 of the
Constitution, which provides that the executive power
"extends to the execution and maintenance of this
constitution, and of the laws of the Commonwealth” and
did "not involve any judgment about the merits of public
funding of chaplaincy services in schools".

We extend our warmest possible thank you to all the

someone has been kind enough to help.
We also encourage everyone above the age of 16 to

Αδελφοποίηση της δέκατης τάξης μας με την αντίστοιχη τάξη του σχολείου Αριστοτέλης του Καναδά. National Simultaneous Story Time
At 11am on Wednesday 23rd May the Junior School
participated in the National Simultaneous Story Time.
This year the story was The Very Cranky Bear by Nick
Bland. After reading the story teachers chose some
activities based on the story. The Year 1 and Year 3
students wrote about when they felt 'cranky', the Year 2
students answered questions about the story in
groups. Working with their buddy class, some of the
reception students drew themselves as 'cranky' bears and
wrote about when they were 'cranky'. The pre-school
students listened to the story with their buddy class. I
think our students really enjoyed the feeling of connection
with other students all around Australia. We hope to
participate again next year.

Excursion to the Marine Discovery Centre
On Friday of Week 1 the Year Fours went to the Marine
Discovery Centre. We went down to Henley Beach and
went beach-combing. We found crabs, shells, etc. We
walked back to the Centre, split up into groups and looked
at four stations. The first station was an aquarium. There
were seahorses, puffer fish and a Port Jackson shark.
Year 5V and 5N Excursion to the Migration Museum
On the 6th and 7th of June Yr 5V and Yr 5N visited the
Migration Museum. When we arrived we were all given a
nineteenth century child’s name and we dressed up in
period costumes. Our guide spoke to us about the different
people who migrated to South Australia to start the new
colony. We also got to play games that the children would
have played in those times. Some of the games we played
were knucklebones and hopscotch. The knucklebones were
made of actual sheep’s knuckles! We enjoyed playing the
games and learnt something new.
After our visit we were taken on a short city tour to see the
Statue of Colonel William Light at Montefiore Hill and we
also visited Light Square where Light’s body was buried.
We all enjoyed the excursion, especially learning about
South Australia’s past.

Kate Ellis MP—Federal Member for Adelaide
Miss Kate Ellis visited St George College on Thursday 14th
of June 2012 and she addressed the senior school students,
Years 10-12. She spoke to the students about her education
and her work experience as a young member of parliament.
Students were given an insight into the world of politics
and that it is very important for their voice to be heard
through the electorate when they are at the age to vote.
Miss Ellis also answered all questions from our students
and gave them useful advice for their transition from senior
secondary to tertiary education or the world of work. Miss
Ellis also kindly supplied a useful hand out of advice and
ideas for students to use when writing their resume or job
application. “Your Future. Information Kit for School

proved highly useful to our Year 10 students currently

Mood detectives
By the age of five, kids are pretty proficient mood
detectives. They may not know what put dad in a bad
mood, but they usually know enough to steer clear of him
until his mood improves.
As to impacting on the mood of your kids the best place to
start is by making sure the first thing they see on your face
each morning or evening when you come home from work
is a smile.
US psychologist Martin Seligman found through his
research in the 1990’s that by the age of eight a child’s
view of the world bears such a close resemblance to that of
their primary parent (usually their mothers) that it was
downright spooky. He wrote a book called “The Optimistic
Child” about the phenomenon.
Curl your mouth up at the corners, put a sparkle in your
eyes and tell your face that you are pleased to see
them! It’s not hard to do, just hard to remember!
Seligman found that if their mum catastrophised and
jumped to the worst conclusion about events children were
more likely to do the same. On the other hand, if the
primary care-giver was relaxed or had a ‘take-things-asthey come’ attitude kids were more likely to follow.
He also found that stressed and anxious parents
inadvertently teach kids to stress and worry. They see stress
and anxiousness up-close and personal, so it’s easy to
follow suit.
Your own well-being helps

Open Boys Indoor Soccer
During Term 2 the Open Boys Indoor Soccer Team participated in a Western Region Zone Competition in which they
put their skills against six other schools from the Western Zone. Despite a shaky start to the competition, the boys
navigated their way safely through this stage as group District winners and onto the State Finals where they played
against the best Indoor Soccer Schools in the state.
During this competition, again they began very shakily, losing their first game but were strong enough to regroup and
eventually top their group and qualify for the finals series. In the Semi Final they came up against a familiar foe in
Glenunga, a team from the Western Zone also. The boys were able to hold of a very tough opponent 2-1 and progress to
the Grand Final, where we lost to Gleeson College. In reaching the Grand Final, the boys progressed to an Interstate
Competition to held in SA in August where they will play teams from Victoria.
Well Done to all the Open Boys Indoor Soccer Team
