“Diario Proibito” (A Forbidden Diary)
was written in 1958. Mario Fratti was
15 years old when nine of his partisan
friends were murdered by the fascist
regime, in his home town of L’Aquila.
“Diario Proibito” is a homage to
political commitment, and first-hand
memoirs of World War II.
MARIO FRATTI, playwright, actor, and
drama critic, is a well known figure
on the literary and theatrical scene
in the US. Several of his 91 plays
have been translated and performed
in 19 languages and have granted
him many Awards. Among them,
seven Tony Awards for the smash hit
Broadway musical “Nine”.

Born and raised in Messina (Sicily), Cettina
Donato started playing drums at the age
of 6. She has been performing since she
was a child.
At the age of 8 during a concert she
met the Director of the Conservatory of
Messina who really encouraged her to
study music at the Conservatory. Cettina
graduated in Classical Piano, Jazz Piano
and in Musical Didactic.
She also studied Classical Composition.
She graduated in Social Psychology
from the University of Messina and she
obtained two Masters in Special Didactic.
Due to her strong skills in playing all
styles of music she listened by ear,
Cettina not only plays classical music but
pop and jazz as well. Cettina graduated
from Berklee College in December 2011
majoring in Jazz Composition.

THE ITALIAN OPERA IN THE
CHAMBER MUSIC

With five million copies sold,
Fabio Volo’s books have made him
unquestionably one of the most
acclaimed authors in Italy and a sort
of miracle in a country which seems
to have lost its reading culture: no one
succeeded as he did at harmoniously
connecting with the feelings of a
“mega-generation” spanning from
age twenty to forty. In this new novel,
now available in the U.S., Fabio Volo
tells the story of two brothers who
are as opposite as they can be in
both character and lifestyle. Also in
e-books: “One More Day” and “Day
Break”.
Fabio Volo, born in Brescia in 1972,
is a writer, actor, radio and TV deejay and the author of six extremely
successful novels still riding high in
the bestsellers charts.
The program for this concert covers some
of the transcripts of the most famous

Massimo de Bonfils, Professor at the S.
Cecilia Conservatory in Rome, graduated
both in Violin and Viola. At thirty-one
he became, in Alessandria and Novara,
the youngest conservatory director in
Italy. He has performed as soloist with
Orchestras in three continents and is
invited to be part of numerous juries of
prestigious International Awards.
Luca Minervino, graduated in classical
guitar at Conservatory in Bari and has
attended various master classes. He has
quickly established himself in various
national and international competitions.
He has performed in New York at the
Bronxville Women’s Club and also in St.
Petersburg at the Italian Cultural Institute.

This award is a project of the Italian
Cultural Institute conceived to
introduce the excellence of young
Italian contemporary artists in
New York. The winners, selected
by an international jury, have the
opportunity to present their works
in a personal exhibition at the Italian
Cultural Institute in New York. By
establishing this award, ICI intends
to highlight its commitment to the
promotion of contemporary young
Italian artists, with a careful, rigorous
selection process.

Maristella De Panizza Lorch, Professor
Emerita of Italian and Medieval
and Renaissance Studies at Barnard
College at Columbia University, has
taught courses on Dante, Petrarca,
Renaissance Humanism, and related
topics for over fifty years. Since retiring
Dr. Lorch has devoted herself to
writing a semi-fictionalized memoir of
her roots in the Austro-Italian Alps, her
experience of the resistance in Fascist
controlled Italy, her immigration to
the United States as a war bride, and
her subsequent development as an
academic humanist, an entrepreneur,
and a wife and a mother of three
daughters. Her memoirs form a
trilogy, of which Beyond Gibraltar is
the second volume. The first book,
Mamma in her Village, was published
in 2005 by Ryder and Finn. Dr. Lorch
is currently working on the third
volume The Other Shore.

Andrea Zanzotto (1921-2011) is widely
considered one of the most important
Italian and European poets of the
twentieth century. Zanzotto’s poetry
has registered the profound social and
cultural changes that have transformed
postwar Italy.
Patrick Barron teaches at the University of
Massachusetts. He has received awards
from the Academy of American Poets,
the American Academy in Rome, the
Fulbright Commission, and the National
Endowment for the Arts.

PLACES AND LIFE OF JEWISH
DIASPORA IN SOUTHERN ITALY
IN MEMORY OF CESARE COLAFEMMINA
Cesare Colafemmina (1933-2012)
was a professor of Hebrew Epigraphy
and Antiquities at the University of
Bari, and of Hebrew Literature at
the University of Calabria. His entire
lifetime as a scholar was devoted to
researching the presence of Jews in
Southern Italy, from Late Antiquity to
the Middle Ages.
Fabrizio Lelli teaches Hebrew
Language and Literature at the
University of Salento and is presently
a fellow at the Herbert D. Katz Center
for Advanced Judaic Studies in
Philadelphia.
Mauro Perani is professor of Hebrew
at the University of Bologna, Italy. He
is credited as having discovered the
oldest known complete Torah scroll,
dating from 1155-1225, kept at the
University of Bologna.
