ANNOUNCEMENT AND HOW TO PARTICIPATE The first edition of the award named after Vittorio Foa has been published on www.premiovittoriofoa.it The award has been established with the following aims: To honour Vittorio Foa, an Italian statesman and trade-unionist. An anti-fascist, he remains one of the most revered personalities in the Italian and European left-wing movement in the 20th century. Foa was a member of the Italian Resistance, siding with Partito d’Azione in Turin and Milan. Following the war, he was Member of Parliament, before heading CGIL, the leading trade union, and later becoming a senator and an academic. Supporting the study of history, especially Italian and international political history in the 20th century. Stimulating reading amongst younger generations; encouraging critical and historical reflection. ARTICLE N. 1 The award - “Premio Internazionale Vittorio Foa - Città di Formia” - is divided into three sections: 1. Questo Novecento (This 20th century) 2. Il ritorno dell’individuo (The return of the individual) 3. Premio speciale della Giuria Vittorio Foa (Special award of the Vittorio Foa jury) ARTICLE N. 2 The “Questo Novecento” section, which includes two awards, one for a thesis and another for creative composition, should centre on 20th century history, in particular, the years between the two wars, antifascism, the Resistance, the bipolar world, with emphasis on changes in political parties, institutions and society at large. PREMIO TESI (THESIS AWARD) Eligibility: individuals, with no limitations on age and citizenship, holding either a Master’s degree or a PHD. Item to be delivered: Master’s degree thesis and/or PHD thesis delivered at any Italian university between 1 January 2010 and 10 July 2014. If the thesis is written in a language other than Italian, a translated copy is required. Award: the winner will receive a €3,000 voucher. PREMIO COMPOSIZIONE (COMPOSITION AWARD) Eligibility: individuals, with no limitations on age and citizenship. Item to be delivered: essay, poem, any form of prose, whether unpublished or published (items published between 1 January 2010 and 10 July 2014 only). The document has to be written in Italian language (or in a foreign language with translation). Award: the winner will receive a €3,000 voucher. 1 ARTICLE N.3 The “Il Ritorno Dell’individuo” section, which comprises respective awards for short film and photographic reportage, will acknowledge visual/creative art works focusing on the themes of work and trade unions from a historical perspective, reflecting either real or made-up events about the search for and loss of work, and professional growth, in the dialectic between individualism, competition and solidarity in the modern age. In this section, interviews with labourers, entrepreneurs, trade-unionists, and local and national politicians are encouraged. PREMIO CORTOMETRAGGIO (SHORT FILM AWARD) Eligibility: individuals, with no limitations on age and citizenship. Item to be delivered: a short film produced with any recording device (not earlier than 1 January 2010), maximum duration time 30 minutes. If filmed in a language other than Italian, must be sub-titled. The subtitling of Italian films for deaf viewers would be appreciated. The film should be delivered in DVD. Award: the winner will receive a €3,000 voucher. PREMIO REPORTAGE FOTOGRAFICO (PHOTOGRAPHIC REPORTAGE AWARD) Eligibility: individuals, with no limitations on age and citizenship. Item to be delivered: a photo reportage containing between 5 to 30 photos, either uploaded to CD/DVD or printed in a photo album, including a brief presentation. Award: the winner will receive a €3,000 voucher. ARTICLE N. 4 The “Premio Speciale Della Giuria Vittorio Foa” award acknowledges people and/or organisations that the jury deems to have contributed to keeping alive the memory of the 20th century and the collective struggle for respect, dialogue and cohabitation. The winner will be awarded a €5,000 voucher. If none of the works is considered adequate, the jury can decide not to declare a winner. ARTICLE N.7 By participating, candidates authorise the organisers of the award to reproduce and broadcast images and text from submitted materials on any device, publication, information and advertising material and on the award website itself. The organisation undertakes to mention the authors of the works displayed. 2 ARTICLE N.8 Each author is responsible for the content of their entries. Participation entails acceptance of the present document, relieving the organisation of any civil and penal responsibility towards third parties. Candidates must guarantee originality of the works and the truthfulness of the declarations enclosed with the application. The material submitted by participants will not be returned and will remain in the award archive. ARTICLE N.9 The prizes will be awarded to the winners at a prize giving ceremony in Formia in October 2014. The Premio Tesi, Composizione, Cortometraggio, Reportage Fotografico (€3,000 each) and the Premio Speciale della Giuria Vittorio Foa (€5,000) will be delivered within 90 days of the event. Accommodation, meals and transportation costs will be paid by the Comune Di Formia. ARTICLE N.10 The present document will be published on www.premiovittoriofoa.it, on the Comune di Formia website and on the IPAB SS.ANNUNZIATA website.
