Hong Kong Arts Centre & Hong Kong Art School
Announced Mr. Fumio Nanjo as Art Education International Director
effective July 1, 2014.
Hong Kong Arts Centre, together with Hong Kong Art School (a division of Hong Kong Arts Centre), is
pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Fumio Nanjo (南條史生) as Art Education International
Director, effective 1 July 2014. Mr. Nanjo will be closely engaged with academic activities of the Hong
Kong Art School. It is envisaged that Mr. Nanjo will bring the School to another level of development,
particularly in terms of enhancing the School’s artistic and international exposure. Being one of the most
significant curators in the contemporary Japanese art scene, Mr. Nanjo is anticipated to also draw on a
more vivid and potent bond between the School and the art industry of Japan.
Mr. Nanjo has been the Director of the Mori Art Museum (森美術館館長), Japan,
since 2006. He has been an art critic and a lecturer at the Art Centre of the Keio
University (慶應義塾大学アート・センター) for a substantial period of time, as
well as a curator.

Born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1949, Mr. Nanjo received his Bachelors of Arts in Economics and Aesthetics in
1976 from Keio University (慶應義塾大学経済学部、文学部哲学科美学美術史学専攻卒業). In his long
career associated with art and culture, Mr. Nanjo had the experiences of serving as an officer of the Japan
Foundation (国際交流基金) (1978-1986) , Director of ICA Nagoya (ICA ナゴヤ) (1986-1990) , the Founder
and Director of Nanjo and Associates (ナンジョウアンドアソシエイツ(株)) (1990 – 2002) and the
Deputy Director of the Mori Art Museum (2002 – 2006).
Mr. Nanjo has been travelling worldwide for his art curatorial works and advisory services, and his main
achievements include:
Commissioner of the Japan Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (1997)
Commissioner of the Taipei Biennale (1998)
Jury member of the Turner Prize at the Tate Gallery, London (1998)
Co-curator of the 3rd Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, Brisbane (1999)
Member of the selection committee of the Biennale of Sydney (2000)
Specialist for the Japan Pavilion at EXPO 2000 in Hanover
Artistic co-director of the Yokohama Triennale (2001)
Tokyo-section curator of the Sao Paulo Biennale (2002)
Jury member of the Golden Lion Prize, Venice Biennale (2005)
Artistic director of Singapore Biennale (2006, 2008)

Mr. Nanjo holds various positions on public and private boards and committees. He used to be board
members of Association International des Critiques d 'Art (AICA) and Comité International de l’ICOM pour
les Musées et les Collections d'Art Moderne (CIMAM).

About Mori Art Museum (森美術館)
The Mori Art Museum is an privately founded world-class contemporary art
institution located at the top of a 53 floor in the Mori Tower at Roppongi (六本木ヒ
