OECTIMES late valentine edition Chocolate Letters by Miek n my country we don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day but we have some other charming traditions concerning chocolate. Chocolate from Holland is very good actually. It is made with real cream, not with powdered or condensed milk. In Japan you can only buy one brand I think, Van Houten. Belgian chocolate is more famous; I am sure you know Godiva. In Holland we give our friends and family chocolate letters. What? Yes, letters made out of chocolate, around 250 grams a piece. The letters we give are the person’s initials. I have a funny story about this. Both I and one of my cousins have a Q in our initials. Now Q is very rare so… chocolate Q’s don’t exist… And what do you think I got instead of my beautiful Q? An O. An O! A boring common O for my beautiful Q. My only consolation was that my cousin has not only a Q, but also an X in his initials. Hahah , a, and X (his middle name is Xander). I’m not even going to tell you what he got instead of his fancy X! I like white chocolate but white chocolate is not good for letters. They tend to lose their shape, so I usually got milk chocolate. Happy Valentine! Love Kiwi` style In New Zealand there is a more relaxed style to finding a partner and falling in love. The Flat- In New Zealand many young people live together sharing a big house, 3-6 flatmates are not uncommon, guys and girls live & party together and romance can bloom- especially after a few beers or a house party! The Club- Similar to Japan, people go out with there friends and flatmates especially on Saturday night, most people stay out until 4-5am and if your lucky enough maybe you wont go home alone! The BBQ- If you have a BBQ as a young person, usually it is an open invitation for anyone to join in! The neighbours might smell the food and come over with some Beer and Sausages (a common invitation). Usually you wont know everyone at your BBQ; there will be plenty of strangers to turn into friends. The Office- It is common for people to have relationships with people they work with in NZ, and afterhours a lot of company parties fuelled by alcohol, can turn out pretty crazy! ;-) The Pub- Similar to the club but less classy pick-up-lines required, just choose a cute girl or guy and buy them a Beer (or a pie) if they accept, your job is done. and if all else fails well...there is always The Farm! Enjoy Valentines Day! -Bennet veryone enjoys chocolates, well except me. But do you know the history of chocolates? Chocolates are made from the seeds of cacao. When the Spanish first went to the Americas about 2000 years ago, they found the natives enjoyed chocolate drinks. These people, including the Maya and Aztec, mixed ground cacao seeds with various seasonings to make a spicy and bitter chocolate drink. The beverage known as xocolƗtl means "bitter water". The seeds of the cacao tree have a strong bitter taste, and must be fermented like natto to develop the flavor. it is then roasted and ground. The Spanish brought cacao seeds back to Europe with them but kept the recipe a secret for more than a hundred years. Slowly new recipes were created and the taste and texture slowly changed with time. In the beginning only the rich could enjoy chocolate but now most people can. Nowadays the biggest producers of cacao in the world are Ghana, Nigeria and Ivory Coast but not all the people in these countries can enjoy it. Chocolate can be good for you if you don’t have too much of it. How often do you eat Chocolate? Are you addicted to Chocolate? Why do women give men chocolate on Valentine’s Day? Valentine’s day Ashley alentines day can be very different in countries around the world. Originally it began䌮 as many holidays in the year to remember old Christian heroes. Valentine's Day also has local traditions in the UK. In Norfolk a character called 'Jack' Valentine knocks on the back door of houses leaving sweets and presents for children. Although he leaves treats, many children are scared of this mystical person. In Wales many people celebrate "Dydd Santes Dwynwen" (St Dwynwen's Day) on 25 January instead of, or as well as St Valentine's Day. The day celebrates St Dwynwen, the hero of Welsh lovers. In France, a Catholic country, Valentine's Day is known simply as "Saint Valentin", and is celebrated in the same way as other countries. In Denmark & Norway Valentine's Day (14 Feb) is known as Valentinsdag. It is not celebrated much, but a lot people eat a romantic dinner with their partner, send a card to a secret love or give a red rose to their loved one. In Sweden it is called Alla hjärtans dag ("All Hearts' Day") and began in the 1960s by the flower shops and flowers for this holiday are only lower than those for Mother's Day. In Finland, Valentine's Day is called Ystävänpäivä which translates into "Friend's day". As the name says, this day is more about remembering your friends than your loved ones. In Romania, the traditional holiday for lovers is Dragobete, which is celebrated on February 24. It is named after a person from Romanian folklore who was supposed to be the son of Baba Dochia. Part of his name is the word drag ("dear"), which can also be found in the word dragoste ("love"). As you can see, Valentines day initially began as a religious celebration or coming from folklore, but now it has changed into a day where people either enjoy time with loved ones, or to make somebody they like, know that they are interested. However you celebrate it, we hope you have a good time.
