regard. If you move or change your telephone number, please
contact the parish office (267-6644). Not only will this help
avoid confusion, but it will also save the cost of paying
additional charges for returned mail. Thank you.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS
“What profit would there be for one to gain the whole
world and forfeit his life?” Matthew 16:26
St. Francis of Assisi once said, “Remember, you are
what you are in the eyes of God, and nothing else.” We
often forget this stewardship wisdom when we spend all
of our time, talent and treasure to gain more of the
world’s riches. We need to set our priorities based on
God’s values and not the values of the material world.

WE’RE STILL LOOKING
Do you regularly attend the Sunday 10:30 Mass? Would
you be willing to escort a sight impaired parishioner from
Chatham Acres to Mass and back? If we have enough
volunteers, it won’t be every week. If so, please contact the
parish office at 860-267-6644. Thank you for your service
to your family in Christ.
Question to Ponder:
Because before “taking up the cross” and “following,” Jesus
bids me “deny myself,” what radical shift of values, reordering of priorities, refocusing of vision must take place in my
heart as discipleship’s non-negotiable Step#1?
22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
This past weekend I spoke about the movie
God’s Not Dead. One of the key themes in
the movie is standing up for Jesus. In today’s
Gospel Jesus shows us just what that
“standing up” will entail….He says “whoever wishes to come
after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever
loses his life for my sake will find it.” As we speak, Christians
are being persecuted around the world. Some of the most
ancient Christian Communities (Damascus Syria, Chaldea Iraq)
are now being forced to live these very words. They are being
put to death simply because they are Christian. This should
make us pause and reflect upon the grace we have to gather
freely every weekend as a community.
Another key aspect to consider in these words of Jesus are
the words “you are an obstacle to me” and “follow”. The
seemingly harsh words of Jesus to Peter are a reminder to him
that Jesus has a divine mission from the Father-and nothing or
no one should get in the way. In the movie God’s Not Dead
Josh lost his girlfriend by choosing to challenge the professor’s
assertion that God is Dead. I had a friend in seminary who
converted from Judaism to Catholicism, only to have his family
disown him. St. Thomas More had to be put to death to remain
faithful to Jesus rather than obey the orders of his friend King
Henry VIII. Our lives need not be that dramatic but if we are
following the Lord there will be opposition but it should not
discourage us.
The other key word is “follow.” It is the Lord who leads.
Not us. Sometimes we have the temptation to say Lord I have
these great plans, please bless them. Really? It takes active
discernment and listening to the Lord to make sure it is His plan
and not ours. There can sometimes by a tendency to get ahead
of Him. Rest assured if it is not His will there will be roadblock
after roadblock. On the flip side, if it is His will, door after door
will open. We must learn to “wait on the Lord.”
One person who is working in God’s Vineyard and
following God’s footsteps is Fr. Raj, who will be with us this
weekend for the Mission Appeal. Fr. Raj is the Mission Director
for the Diocese of Kumbakonam in India. His diocese
represents another early Christian community. Tradition tells us
that St. Thomas made it to India and preached the gospel to the
local inhabitants. Although India is primarily a Hindu and
Muslim country there is a big pocket of Catholic Christians in
the South and West. The diocese has an area of 7823 sq. km.
and is situated in Tamil Nadu and a Catholic population of
213,000 (6% of the population). In literature Fr. Raj has shared
with me “the diocese is trying to materialize its missionary
goals, depending on the availability of funds. Every year, an
average of 50 young men and women go out of the diocese to
other missions throughout India and other parts of the world to
serve God and His people as missionaries. The mission and
spiritual prospects of Kumbakonam diocese are bright but its
needs are pressing. Sixty percent of its Catholics are
depressingly poor. Therefore, your fervent prayers and generous
help are earnestly requested for building the Kingdom of God,
in and through the diocese of Kumbakonam, India.” Please be
generous in this weekend’s second collection.
Prayers are offered for all who have children or young
adults returning to school at this time. We pray that the school
of Jesus will be a school that gives them a solid foundation.

carry out his charitable works around the world; helps provide prescription medications, nursing care, and much more
for thousands of elderly religious; and allows a countless
number of students to experience an education grounded in
Catholic tradition.
You will be receiving a mailing with more detailed

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Introduction-Liturgy of the Word:
God has called us here as disciples today. As we gather,
we will hear readings about the price of discipleship,
how we must deny ourselves and take up our cross. We
begin and end every one of these Sunday celebrations
with the sign of the cross. Let us pray today for the
grace to truly appreciate what it means to be marked with
that sign.

AUGUST HEALTH TIP
Heat Exhaustion: This is a heat-related illness caused
by the loss of water and electrolytes from the body. It
causes excess sweating, extreme fatigue, weakness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and headache. Sometimes it
causes muscle cramping.
Risk factors are: strenuous exertion in high temperatures, poor physical conditions, loss of salt or water by
reducing oral intake, overuse of diuretics (water pills),
pre-existing illness with fever, alcohol use and clothing
too warm for the climate.
Heat Exhaustion can lead to dehydration: The human
body is comprised largely of water. If you lose more fluids than you take in, you can become dehydrated. This
means there are not enough fluids in our body for it to
function right.
What to do for dehydration: Drink plenty of liquids,
water is best. Doctor may advise electrolyte solution or
sports drinks. Avoid alcohol; caffeine and carbonated
drinks can lead to increased dehydration.
Prevention of Heat Exhaustion/Dehydration:
Watch for early signs of heat illness and stop physical
exertion before they worsen - minimize skin exposure;
use a hat and lightweight, light colored clothing - do not
exercise in hot weather - avoid dehydration by drinking
8 ounces of fluid for every 15 minutes of moderate exercise - limit alcohol and caffeine use in hot weather.
Get prompt Medical Attention if there is: continued
vomiting, worsening symptoms of weakness or dizziness, not able to keep fluids down, body temperature of
103F oral or higher, confusion or coma, hot, flushed skin
without sweating.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
One of the most memorable images from the pontificate of
Pope John Paul II is not his shocked expression as he is hit by
a bullet, but rather his tender meeting with his assailant, and
his forgiveness. It is far more compelling because, although
people are struck by bullets every day, true reconciliation is in
relatively short supply. An outside observer might list
attempting to kill the pope as an unforgiveable sin, but of
course we know that forgiveness of sin is woven deeply into
our tradition of living as Christ did.
Interestingly enough, the Church took a hard line on
these matters early on. Until the second century, people
expected Christ’s return in the near future, so they deferred
judgment to him. Soon, however, bishops began to grant
forgiveness for sin after baptism, but only once. What we
know as the sacrament of penance takes its life from Jesus’
work of reconciliation, but just as scripture shows Jesus
forgiving people in one life-changing encounter, so the church
granted one chance only. Great sins were the target, such as
idolatry, adultery, and murder. Penance was lengthy, difficult,
and public, and the bishop was in charge of the process. For
the next several weeks, we’ll look at subsequent creative and
helpful changes in the celebration of this sacrament.
