Page 2 HRS NEWSLETTER NEWS FROM AROUND THE SCHOOL EB Awareness at Holy Rosary The final week of October is national EB Awareness Week. Epidermolysis Bullosa, or EB, is a very rare genetic connective tissue disorder that affects 1 child out of every 20,000 births (that means about 200 children a year are born with EB). EB is actually a group of disorders that share a prominent manifestation of extremely fragile skin that blisters and tears from friction or trauma. Internal organs and bodily systems can also be seriously affected by EB. The list of secondary complications can be long and may require multiple interventions from a range of medical specialists. As of today, there is no cure or treatment. Daily wound care, pain management and protective bandaging are the only options available. Two HR students, Sophie (8th grade) and Sam (4th grade) Schulz, both suffer from EB. Today, we invite all of you, our Holy Rosary family of families, to say a special prayer for Sophie and Sam, and for all those who suffer from EB. To learn more, visit www.ebkids.org or www.debra.org. Save the Date! Best regards, Maureen Moore Director - Peabody Energy Leaders in Education www.peabodyenergyleadersineducation.org October Issue of Just Thinking… This month’s series addresses the following questions: How do we turn distress into joy and contentment? What practices and techniques are available to us all in dealing with both daily struggles and traumatic events? What are important aspects of each practice that provide for greater personal growth? The October edition enters into one of the most important, and most challenging areas of our human existence. The 5-part series, Turning Joy into Distress, examines the question of how we can address our stress and despair, and learn to feel joy and contentment on the other side. The series looks at time-honored, research-based practices that are free, widely available, and have no unintended physical side effects. In a society dominated by pharmaceutical advertisements and promises of a quick fix, it looks to go deeper into habits and practices that can truly change our lives no matter what we face. The Diocesan school theme is A Family of Families, so once again the stewardship theme coordinates well with Holy Rosary’s Annual Fall Stewardship Campaign, “One Family in Christ”. The gifts of Time, Talent & Treasure focus our attention on the essential ingredients that unite us as a family. On November 8 & 9, hopefully you will take the opportunity to visit the Ministry Fair in the Parish Hall and learn about all the opportunities to get involved and make a difference here at Holy Rosary. God is offering you many ways to serve Him and become “One Family in Christ”. We have each been given the gifts of Time & Talent. As good stewards, we should use the gifts that the Holy Spirit has given us to build up the Kingdom here at Holy Rosary. Then on November 15 & 16, you are invited to renew your personal financial investment in the mission of our parish for the upcoming year by turning in your 2015 Stewardship of Treasure Pledge Form, as well as your Time & Talent Form. It is important to turn in your Time & Talent Form, as we are updating our lists for ALL ministries. So, please check all the boxes in which your are currently serving. Your prompt response will be most helpful as we budget for 2015. (This Stewardship Campaign is not to be confused with the Diocesan CPC Campaign which occurs in the spring.) As always, your generosity will enable us to continue to improve and support the many important ministries that we extend to our parish family, our local community and abroad in 2015. Please look into your heart and prayerfully consider your pledges of Time, Talent, & Treasure to Holy Rosary Parish. The collective gifts of our people can have a significant impact on our families and our community. We have just finished a very successful Capital Campaign, and are grateful for the wonderful support for our building and renovation projects, but it is the weekly financial commitment that enables the parish to support all the ministries and day to day operations. Thanks in advance for your continued support through the generous sharing of your Time, Talent, Treasure & Faith as we strive to become “One Family in Christ”. Newcomers Breakfast – November 9 We would like to welcome all those who have become a member of our Parish since last April. This could be through joining as a new Parishioner or new through the RCIA program. You are invited to join us in a Celebration of becoming part of our Parish Family. Please join us for a Newcomers Breakfast in conjunction with Food & Fellowship and the Stewardship Fair on: Sunday, November 9, 2014 in the Parish Hall. Stop by after the 9AM Mass or around 10AM. Please gather with us for food, fun, fellowship & freebies! (Holy Rosary Goodie Bags will be given out) NEWCOMER’S BREAKFAST Sunday, November 9 After the 9AM Mass NAME: ___________________________________ #__________ RSVP by November 5, 2014 by turning in slip to Parish/School Office, place in collection basket or by calling/emailing the Parish Office at 477-8923 or cgilles@evdio.org Red Ribbon Week: A Family Talk Activity Red Ribbon Week is an awareness campaign to help develop and support ways to prevent youth from using illegal drugs or legal drugs illegally. Prevention can take place in many forms and one way is in your own home. As a parent you are a powerful prevention resource. A great prevention tool is taking time to discuss your family values and expectations with your children. Please take this time to sit down together to discuss your family values and explain why they are important. Explaining why you have certain values will help your children remember the importance of the values and they will remember you took the time to explain values to them. Please use this time to reflect how your values fit in with a drug free life for your child. If you have very young children you can always talk about what a value is and why they are important. It may make sense to use examples related to how you value your faith and your relationship with Jesus, how you value honesty, hard work, etc. – things that might be familiar to your younger children. This family time activity need not take very much time (so that your children to not lose interest or get lost in all the words), and it should be a time for you to talk WITH your children. This is not a lecture. It should be fun and make your child feel comfortable and happy to spend time with you. Values are an important topic so you set the stage for how this discussion will happen. If you are excited, they will be excited. If you sit down with this paper and treat it like an assignment they will, too. This is not meant for hours of discussion and can be done in fifteen minutes. Helpful Discussion Questions Do you know what a value is? What are some of our family values? Do you think our values are important? Do you have any values you think are important? What are your goals right now? Do you have any goals for the future? At the end of your family talk time praise your child for being there with you. We hope you have some family fun time just talking together. If you have questions or if you would like additional resources, please feel free to contact Donna Wolter, our Youth First School Counselor. We are blessed to have a partnership between Holy Rosary and Youth First in the best interests of all our children. We continue to create amazing technological tools to solve problems, to provide entertainment, and to communicate with one another. However, the rapid introduction of technology into our lives can sometimes leave us wondering how well we are managing their use. For three Sundays in November Annunciation Parish will offer a program for married couples on how to place our technological tools in their proper place. These discussions will examine the effects of new technologies such as mobile devices on our prayer life and important relationships; how to integrate social media into our lives while protecting our intimacy, privacy, and our marriages; and how to guide our children through the challenges they face because of their hyper-connectedness. Breakfast with St. Nicholas December 6th – 9-10:30AM St. Nicholas O good holy Nicholas, you who brought joy to children, put in my heart the spirit of childhood about which the Gospel speaks. Teach me how to sow happiness around me. Amen. On December 6th Catholic families the world over celebrate in honor of Saint Nick for all his wonderful blessings. To honor this patron saint of children, our Holy Rosary Family traditionally comes together to celebrate St. Nicholas’ feast day as well. This year’s 14th annual Breakfast with St. Nick will be held on Saturday, December 6th from 9:00am – 10:30am in the Holy Rosary School cafeteria. In addition to serving breakfast we will have crafts and a special story time for the children. St. Nicholas himself will be on hand to tell the story of how he came to be a saint and a picture of each child with St. Nick is included in the cost of the event. Finally, in the spirit of St. Nicholas’ devotion to the poor, we will be accepting donations of food or household items to give to those in need. We hope that each child will consider bringing a canned good or other item to donate. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Breakfast with St. Nick Reservations Please RSVP no later than Wednesday, December 3rd, 2014.
