Advent is a wonderful season of waiting expectantly for the coming
of Christ. With only one more Sunday before Christmas our Advent
theme this week turns to joy. Our spirit of joy comes from the words
of Paul to the Philippians, "Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it
again: Rejoice . . .The Lord is near." We are so glad that you have
joined us today in joyful anticipation. Your presence blesses us as
we prepare to sing together . . . "Joy to the world, the Lord has
come! Let earth receive her King . . ."
Children will practice their Christmas program during children’s
church time.

Rejoicing in His presence,
Pastor Stan
this weeks study: John 1: 6-8, 19-28
In our gospel reading today we see that John's primary role is not as
one who baptizes but one who testifies to the light coming into the
world. For John, that meant directing people away from himself
and toward Jesus.
1.) Last week in the Gospel of Mark, John was introduced as a messenger and one who baptized. This week in John's gospel, John the
Baptist is described as a witness. Does being a messenger, one who
baptizes and a witness describe different roles? If so, what differentiates these roles and how might they overlap?
2.) In v. 7 we see that John "came as a witness to testify concerning
the light, so that through him all men might believe." As a witness he
came to prepare people to receive the light. How do you
"prepare" people today to receive the light?
3.) In vv. 19-28 priests, Levites and Pharisees question John's identity.
John identifies himself solely in terms of Jesus. Does Jesus define
who you are? How do you identify yourself?
4.) In vv. 19-28 John was very careful not to detract in any way
from Jesus as being the Lord (v. 23) and the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie (v. 27). In what way(s) can you be just
as careful to not detract from Jesus?
John is testifying to those in the desert and to us that . . .
The best is yet to come!
Pastor Stan
