Letter from the Transformation Artist Guru
Does this sound like your workday?
The alarm goes off. You get up, shower, and head to
work. You see the same people every day; eat lunch
with a couple of your co-workers, and wait for the
clock to tell you it is time to go home. During most
days, nothing remarkable seems to happen. You may
even feel a little bored and do not feel a sense of
meaning in your work.
Don’t worry, you are not alone. Many of us wonder
how a job that seemed so good in the beginning now
seems to leave us feeling listless, empty, or ready to bolt
for the door at the end of each workday.
each day. They are easy to spot. How can you help
others be their best? Research has shown that
focusing on others can be a great source of meaning
andВ whappiness.
Take a close look at your recent successes.
Meaning can come from any moment in life. Look for
meaning in the good moments to help you ride out
the bad ones.
These days, more people are asking themselves: “Is
this all there is?” We wonder what kind of positive
impact we are having on others and how we can make
changes so we feel more energized about our careers.
It can be done, I assure you! Finding meaning at work
is possible and achievable. You don’t necessarily need
to switch departments or careers. Meaning is all around
us; we just have to know where to look!
Here are five strategies on how to develop a greater
sense of meaning at your work place:
Make a list of all the ways you positively
impactВ people.
The work you do has value in this world beyond
just keeping the machinery running. If it didn’t, you
wouldn’t be doing it. Ask yourself what kind of impact
you are making on other people or your customers?
What does the result of your work allow others to do?
Use departmental resources to do well.
The Passport
Positive social relationships can have a huge impact
on our level of happiness, and work can be a great
place to develop new friendships. Try having lunch
with a coworker you don’t know well and talk about
anything other than the job. Ask about family or
outside interests. Who knows, you might end up with
a new friend you never expected!
Your department has resources besides money – such
as manpower and talent – that could be used to make a
difference in your community. Volunteering and helping
with the United Way Campaign this year is a step in the
right direction.
If this is your first time taking classes from The
Passport, then welcome to our Orange County
Learning Family! If you are in one of our current
development series we look forward to seeing you
again at your next scheduled training.
Make it your mission to help others to succeed.
Best regards,
Craig Lee, Administrator

Emergency Management Responder Courses
Do you want to work in a shelter?
american red cross
shelter manager courses
Orange County operates the People
with Special Needs (PSN), Pet-Friendly
and Employee Shelters, as well as
general use shelters in partnership
with the American Red Cross.
Employee Shelters
Orange County operates shelters
for employees and their families.
These shelters that are primarily
designated for Orange County
employees and their families are also
open to the general public though
not broadcasted as such. Since these
are American Red Cross designated
shelters, workers in these facilities
must be certified.
Pet-Friendly Shelters
These shelters offer sheltering to
individuals who desire to bring their
pets along. These sites will provide
shelter to both individuals as well as
their pets. Owners must remain with
their pets, it is not a kenneling shelter,
and be responsible for the care and
maintenance of their animals.
A comprehensive four-part training
program provides full American
Red Cross certification. As a shelter
worker, you may bring your family
with you, but NO pets are allowed
(Except in the pet-friendly shelters).
You may be required to remain on site
until there is no longer an emergency
situation, or until the shelter closes.
People with Special Needs
(PSN) Shelters
These shelters offer sheltering
to individuals who have special
medical needs that require nursing
assistance, but not to the degree of
hospitalization. Each person is highly
encouraged to bring family members
with them to assist in their daily care.
General Population Shelters
These shelters are primarily managed
by the American Red Cross to provide
shelter on an interim basis to all
individuals, including those with
functional needs, until they are able
to return home, or arrange for other
recovery options.
American Red Cross Shelter Manager Course
(Newly Revised)
Course Code: EM-107G
Provides basic information about the activities of the Mass Care
function. Learn the skills needed by Mass Care workers to deliver
quality service to shelter clients. Prepares shelter managers to
effectively and sensitively manage a shelter operation as a team.
It also trains them to understand how to meet the needs of the
people displaced as a result of a disaster. Provides participants with
an opportunity to practice the knowledge and skills needed to run a
successful shelter operation.
A comprehensive four-part training program provides full American
Red Cross certification. As a shelter worker, you may bring your family
with you, but NO pets are allowed (except in the pet-friendly shelters).
You may be required to remain on site until there is no longer an
emergency situation, or until the shelter closes, that might be as long
as 72 hours
