Dear Friends:
It’s a year we will remember forever.
This past June, our children, Allison Olley and Abigail Granite, graduated from
St. Catherine’s High School as members of the Class of 2013.
As any parent can attest, a child’s high school graduation is a remarkable
occurrence – a moment which simultaneously marks ending and beginning,
and one which fills us as parents with indescribable pride.
As a loyal supporter of this fine school, you understand how powerful a St.
Catherine’s education is in today’s world, and how prepared individuals like our
children are for the next phases of their lives when they leave 12th & Park.
When our daughters left for college (Allison to the University of MinnesotaDuluth, Abby to the University of Wisconsin-Madison) they did so with strong
minds and warm hearts. We have no doubt the challenging and faith-based
educations they received at St. Catherine’s will continually help them make
good decisions as they work towards achieving happiness and success.
Isn’t this the most important thing any parent – or donor – can ask of the
school they support?
As our sesquicentennial – 150 years of Catholic, Dominican education
– nears in 2014-15, we are proud this school continues to graduate
individuals ready to lead and eager to excel. Ninety-seven percent of
students from the Class of 2013 are currently enrolled in a college or
university. Over 55% of students in the class were offered merit-based
grants and scholarships, with the average award totaling $37,640.
As you can see, your decision to support the students at St. Catherine’s
has tangible, long-lasting effects. Thank you for the generosity and
kindness you have shown the students of this remarkable school.

150 Y ears and Beyond
Dear Friends,
What an exciting time this is for the St. Catherine’s community! Approaching the
celebration of a sesquicentennial prompts honoring the past, and equally important –
visioning the future.
The Racine Dominicans have been proud to sponsor St. Catherine’s High School for 150
years. The school has grown and evolved in so many ways in light of changing times. Ever
tested, always planning, you begin the next 150 years, aware that Racine Dominican Sisters
will not be in the school.
Your history provides a firm foundation for
the future. With a mission deeply rooted
in the values of our common founder,
Mother Maria Benedicta Bauer, you
venture forth, just as she did, courageously
responding to the needs of the time. High
standards in challenging and supporting
students academically, spiritually and
physically through excellent programs and
opportunities continue to be essential.
The mission of St.
Catherine’s has always
been to further the
outreach Mother Benedicta
modeled in subsequent
eras, ever attune to
evolving needs. We are
proud of the contributions
students and alumnae/i
make in their local
communities throughout
the world.
The mission of St. Catherine’s has always
been to further the outreach Mother

ever attune to evolving needs. We are
proud of the contributions students and
alumnae/i make in their local communities throughout the world.
While celebrating this significant anniversary, we continue to partner with you, moving St.
Catherine’s High School into its next stage of growth and vitality. It is our fondest hope
that efforts continue to effect change for the good of all who seek quality K-12 Catholic
education in Racine County.
Through this and every age, we resonate with the words of Mother Benedicta, “Divine
Providence has helped us so far, and all has turned out for the best. So it will be in the future.”
With God’s blessings for grand celebrations in your sesquicentennial year,

P R I N CI PAL ’S W EL C OME
Dear SCHS Community,
As I reflect on my first year of service, I am grateful for the support from so many in the St.
Catherine’s High School community. It is a testament to this great institution that countless
parents and alumni continue to be so deeply involved in our vibrant Catholic, Dominican tradition.
Over 480 students across grades 6-12 are
presently enrolled at SCHS. Each can take
justifiable pride in being part of the rich Angel
tradition. It is my sincere hope that each and
every St. Catherine’s student encounters both the
instructional excellence and personal care that is
at the heart of this school community.
I again opened the year by sharing a Gospel
message of power and purpose. In the Gospel
of Matthew it is written, “You are the light of the
world…just so, your light must shine before others,
that they may see your good deeds and glorify your
heavenly Father.” (Matthew 5:14-16)
Our students are called
to be the light of the
world. They are called
to serve others in the
name of the Lord in
ways large and small.
I have asked them
to recognize and
appreciate all that
goes into making the St.
Catherine’s experience
one of service and
community building.
Our students are called to be the light of the
world. They are called to serve others in the name
of the Lord in ways large and small. I have asked
them to recognize and appreciate all that goes
into making the St. Catherine’s experience one of service and relationship building. All
students and staff are called to fully live out the Catholic, Dominican mission with respect to
the pillars of prayer, study, service, and community.
Whenever speaking about the school, I am clear about my priorities – mission, academics
and activities. First and foremost, our students need to be mindful of our Catholic,
Dominican mission and represent the call of Christ in our world. Next, our students must
focus on learning and putting forth their best effort with regard to academic endeavors.
Finally, our students should appropriately balance their lives by participating in the many
wonderful opportunities existing beyond the classroom.
Thanks to the ongoing support of our alumni and friends we are able to preserve the
strengths of St. Catherine’s, especially to challenge, nurture, and inspire students to grow
intellectually and through faith. All of this is made possible by the continuing generosity of
our benefactors.
Thank you again for your prayers and support!
Thomas Noonan, Ph.D.

The Pillars of St. Catherine’s
Y E A R- IN- REV IEW
At St. Catherine’s, students will explore their faith, be challenged by an excellent
curriculum, learn the importance of serving others, and discover new interests and
passions. They are encouraged to live out the Catholic, Dominican mission of St.
Catherine’s and give due attention and respect to the four pillars of prayer, community,
study and service.
~ Dr. Noonan
Prayer
Whether it was the entire
student body walking to St.
Richard’s for a special mass
during Week With a Purpose
or Campus Ministry gathering
in the school chapel to lead
the Scriptural Rosary, faith
formation was once again
the cornerstone of the SCHS
educational experience in 201213. Here Mary Weir ’13 offers
a sign of peace to a classmate
during the first all-school
Liturgy of the year.
Community
Every November students and staff participate in the annual winter clothing drive.
For thirty-four years, history teacher Michael O’Brien has overseen the collection
of sweaters, coats, hats, mittens, scarves and anything else that will help keep the
community’s needy warm during the harsh Wisconsin winter. Each of the last four
years brought record totals and, in 2012, the school amassed an incredible 8,042
items. The clothing drive, the Interact Club beanbag toss tournament (to raise
money for clean water in Uganda) and the middle school’s “Stuff the Bus” campaign
(to fight local hunger) were just a few of the causes uniting the SCHS community in
its desire to impact both locally and globally.
8
Study
In January, Dr. Noonan announced a series of scheduling and requirement changes
which increased the amount of instructional and quiet study time for every student.
Additionally, core credit requirements were raised in the areas of theology, social studies,
math, science, modern language and business education. “As a Catholic, Dominican
school rooted in a tradition of academic excellence, it’s important we continue to maintain rigorous and relevant curricular standards for our students,” said Noonan.
Service
In an effort to enhance the impact of the yearly Walk With a Purpose in honor of Father Leon
Schneider, SCHS conducted its first Week With a Purpose April 29-May 3 to coincide with the
Feast of St. Catherine.
The Week began with an overnight prayer vigil in the school chapel and featured three days
of service interspersed with an all-school mass, a presentation by Sr. Nancy Murray on the life
of Saint Catherine and a panel discussion on service-focused careers.
Students volunteered at several local organizations including the Racine Early Education
Center, Lakeshore Manor nursing home, the Racine Public Library, Montessori School, the
HOPES Center, the Racine Literacy Center and more. Tasks included cleaning, landscaping,
construction, tutoring, gardening, painting and more.

Donor Profile: Don and Jan Klemt
The Seeds of Compassion
When Margaret Klemt, a senior at St. Catherine’s, returned from a service trip to
a poverty-stricken community in the Appalachian Mountains, her parents, Don
and Jan, immediately noticed something different about her.
“I’ll never forget when she got back,” says Don. “She had a really hard time with
some of the stuff she saw there. Things like babies drinking Mountain Dew
from bottles because mothers couldn’t afford formula. The trip opened her
eyes. She was so excited about helping.”
Led by then Campus Minister Vince Kostos, Margaret ’92 and her senior
classmates were the first group to participate in what would evolve into an
annual mission trip at SCHS.
Today, working as a registered nurse in Madison, WI, Margaret (Klemt) Lehmann
is still energized and excited about helping individuals in need. And she isn’t
alone – both of her older siblings are also in the healthcare industry.
Her brother, Tim ’90, is an administrative assistant at the Aaron Diamond AIDS
Research Center in New York, the world’s largest non-profit AIDS research
institute, and her sister, Mary (Klemt) Bogucki ’86 is a registered nurse working
in community health in Madison.
Don and Jan attribute their children’s caregiving professions, in part, to a high
school experience where they matured not only mentally, but morally and
spiritually as well.
“Even though it might have been tough for our kids to realize at the time, faith
formation, character-building, it was all there at SCHS,” says Don. “It’s so obvious
10
today. It’s the way they live their lives with compassion, the way they treat
family members and others. That’s so important.”
Don and Jan believe faith formation is so pivotal to the SCHS experience that
last year they made a substantial five figure gift which helped fund the school’s
chapel renovation project. They became interested when Don’s close friend,
Jim Poulsen ’60, urged them to get involved.
In addition to the Klemt’s generous contribution, gifts from Catherine and
Bill Perez, as well as members of the Class of 1988 and Theodore Thompson
Memorial contributors, helped subsidize the renovation work.
“There are certain places and rooms of the utmost importance in schools,” says
Don, who attended Main Township High School in Chicago. “Especially Catholic
schools. The chapel is one such room.”
Jan, born in New York and educated by Mercy-based nuns as a youngster
before attending an all-girls college in Chicago, was equally intrigued by Jim’s
suggestion of refurbishing the chapel.
“It’s such a special, important place,” she says. “I remember as a girl visiting our
chapel often. Sometimes you just need a place to get away for a moment.”
Through their generosity Don and Jan are eager to help another generation of
students grow into the kind of caring individuals their children have become.
“One of the things I’ve noticed recently [at SCHS] is the attitude of the children,”
says Don. “You can see how involved they are with their education. Jan and
I were here for a science expo and we were so impressed with how they
interacted, how they enjoyed talking to people and explaining. The kids acted
so well-behaved, so interested, so involved – it was great to witness.”
Thanks to the generous gifts of several donors, including Don and
Jan Klemt, the recently renovated school chapel has seen a significant
increase in use throughout the past year. Above, SCHS Foundation
donors celebrate liturgy with students.

Doing the
Little Things
Planning and preparation.
It should come as no surprise that in competitive sports the team best
mastering these things is usually the one emerging victorious. During his time
at SCHS it was up to Martin F. Putz ’61, team manager, to ensure the Angels
were ready.
“He loved managing the teams,” says Marty’s sister, Chris ’63. “He was big on
the details, taking care of the minutiae. [Things like] not forgetting the bats,
keeping score. He was a nitpicker. It’s probably why he was a good manager.”
Senior year, Marty served as manager for boys’ basketball, baseball and football,
working the sidelines for legendary coaches Ed Race and John McGuire.
A desire to master the little things and do whatever was necessary to achieve
success are attributes Marty inherited from his father, Martin Sr., a foundry
apprentice who wanted his son to receive the college education he never had.
“Junior year dad had him take a vocational test,” says Chris. “This was spurred
by the fact Marty was really bad at Spanish. He was intelligent, but didn’t learn
easily so he had to find his niche. Dad wanted to help identify Marty’s areas of
strength to maximize his chances of going to college.”
The move paid off.
In 1967 Marty graduated from Dominican College. In 1981 he earned his
Master’s in Education from Central Michigan University. He worked as a Medical
12
Technologist at St. Luke’s Hospital in Racine
before eventually becoming the Education
Coordinator for the hospital’s MedTech
Program.
After college, Marty remained involved with
intramural sports in Racine competing in
softball and volleyball. It was during these
seasons he developed a profound love for
music.
“The camaraderie after the games often
involved going places with live bands,” says
Chris. “He found music through friends. He
followed people he knew, people like Keith
Ruelle ’62, and got exposed to different
genres. It got to the point Marty would help promote his
favorite bands by getting in touch with local reporters to let them know
who was playing where. He made travel plans around music; he’d stop at a
bluegrass festival on his way to visit our mom in Florida.”
Leaving a Legacy
Marty passed away in October of 2012. He was 69.
In accordance with his wishes there was a private memorial service.
In lieu of flowers Marty requested that the regulars at his favorite
establishments – Evelyn’s, The Yardarm, The Boiler Room and McAuliffe’s
– enjoy a night out on his dime. He wanted everyone to raise a pint and
he wanted to be there when it happened. Friends gathered at all four
establishments, each on a different night, and Marty picked up the tab
every time.
“He loved bluegrass and big band the most,” says Chris. “Marty was a
big fan of the UW-Parkside Reunion Big Band and so they did a gig at
McAuliffe’s one night. It was truly a celebration of his life.”
Today, Marty’s memory lives on not only through his sister Chris, but
through the bands and choirs at St. Catherine’s.
Before he died Marty made arrangements to include the school in his will,
leaving $50,000 in support of the school’s Music Department.
$25,000 was gifted to the department to use as it saw fit. With the other
$25,000, Chris established the Martin F. Putz Music Fund at the St. Catherine’s
High School Foundation. Her brother’s fund will generate a yearly gift to
benefit the department as well as other musical extracurriculars across all
grades.
Martin Putz had a quirky sense of humor. He loved sports. He enjoyed
photography. More than anything, however, he found joy in music. Thanks
to his foresight Marty, a man who enjoyed the minutiae of planning and
preparation, will help countless generations of SCHS musicians learn their
craft and hone their skills.

What Better Way
to Give Back?
It is interesting how certain moments from our past
unsuspectingly manifest themselves in our present
and grip us, refusing to let us go.
For Patricia (McDermott) Moore ’69 a moment
like this happened in her early thirties, after she’d
moved to Chicago and began volunteering at the
Chicago Foundation for Women.
“The Foundation was doing great work, funding a lot
of grassroots organizations,” says Moore. “I was exposed to women and nuns doing
such hard work and making a difference in their homes, schools and neighborhoods.”
During this experience – at a time when the number of women entering the
sisterhood was starting to decline – Moore started thinking back on her experience
at SCHS. She began linking the things she learned at school with the real world work
she was doing in the inner city.
“St. Catherine’s was a community centered on Christian virtues and it was hard not to
incorporate the things we were learning into our everyday lives,” she says.
Volunteering with the nuns all over greater Chicago, Moore realized she wanted to
support young women volunteering in their local communities.
And she knew just the place to do it.
“I realized then how impactful my time at SCHS really
was,” says Moore. “I wanted to reward young women
already involved in their neighborhood organizations and
I thought, What better way to give back then to help a
young girl attend the school that helped me?’”
She created the Patricia McDermott Moore Scholarship
in 1993, a renewable half-tuition award for an incoming
female freshman who has demonstrated a history of
leadership and service.
Prior to the 2012-13 school year, the scholarship was
awarded to Madeline Shea.
Maddie Shea, Class of 2016
Shea, a sophomore, is the starting goalie for the girls’ varsity soccer team and plays tenor
saxophone in the school band. At SCHS she has volunteered at the school’s annual Fall
Open House and the Black & White Ball, the winter clothing drive, the Middle School
Talent Show, Christmas with the Angels and as a middle school volleyball coach.
This winter, Maddie is overseeing a used prescription eyeglasses collection. The
glasses will be handed out to the needy during a mission trip to the Dominican
Republic in December.
“Receiving the Patricia McDermott Moore Scholarship is a tremendous honor,” she
says. “SCHS offers me a fantastic learning environment with lots of extracurricular and
volunteer opportunities. Being able to practice my faith in school is also an invaluable
privilege. None of this would have been possible for me without Mrs. Moore’s
generosity. I will be grateful for this opportunity she has given me for the rest of my life.”

FO U N D AT I O N LE T T E R
Dear Friends:
As I reviewed the work of the Foundation this year for my report, I started thinking about legacies.
Not really financial legacies, but legacies that take a school like St. Catherine’s and turn it into
an institution. A place that becomes more than building, or a business, or a school. It becomes
a second home, a destination, a place you want to make sure your own kids experience, and
their kids too. Having experienced the St. Cat’s legacy, whether you’re a part of a decades-old or
brand-new family, the goal becomes shared: ensuring that SCHS remains alive and vibrant for the
next generation. The responsibility of the St. Catherine’s Foundation, I believe, is to make sure St.
Catherine’s is here as a legacy for another generation, or two, or three, and I’m proud to say that
we’re on the right path – as evidenced by just a few of our efforts over the last twelve months.
First, we welcomed two new members to the Foundation Board, both with strong ties to St
Catherine’s. George Organ 62 will be contributing his financial and accounting acumen in addition
to Scott French 76, a Racine-area attorney. Scott is a current three-student parent and George also
sent his entire family to St. Catherine’s. We welcome their commitment and skills, and I’m certain
we’ll be a better Board thanks to their involvement.
Additionally, as this letter goes to press, a benchmark survey regarding the Foundation is also
prepared to launch. Our goal is to establish a baseline in terms of how people view our workings
and alignment with St. Catherine’s High School. This information will help us determine what we
need to communicate, and eventually gauge how effective that communication is. Look for your
invitation to complete that short survey in the most recent edition of the Angel News.
Finally, I am proud to report the inauguration of the Benedicta Bauer Society. This special group
recognizes those with the foresight, interest and commitment to remembering St. Catherine’s
High School with a deferred gift to the Foundation. Planned gifts help build our endowment,
ensuring the necessary financial resources to provide future generations of Angels with the same
legacy experience over 14,000 alumni have enjoyed since Mother Benedicta opened the school
nearly 150 years ago. Of all the Foundation’s projects, this is the one that will have the greatest
long-term impact by providing a sound and secure future for our Angels. Make sure you call
the Development Office if you are interested in remembering SCHS in your own estate plans, or
if you’ve done so already and want to learn more about what it means to be a member of the
Benedicta Bauer Society.
With all of these initiatives, the Foundation Board is doing its part to ensure that St. Catherines’ legacy
will continue to be accessible for your family for generations to come. On behalf of all of us on the
Foundation Board, I thank you for your contributions to the legacy – whether they’re financial, artistic,
athletic, educational or prayerful. It takes all of us to create and
sustain a legacy. We wouldn’t be the same without you.
Sincerely,
Kevin W. McCabe, M.D.
