CHURCH GOSPEL AND SERMON ETIQUETTE
Parishioners arriving late for Liturgy while our clergy are reading
the Gospel or delivering their sermons are reminded that it is
disrespectful to walk toward the front to take a seat while our
priests are speaking. It is also distracting to other parishioners
who are attempting to concentrate on the message. If you must
enter Liturgy late, you are kindly asked to take a seat at the very
back of the church until the Gospel or sermon are completed.
EPISTLE Romans 13:11-14; 14:1-4
Brethren, salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed; the night is far
gone, the day is at hand. Let us then cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us conduct ourselves becomingly as in the day, not in reveling and
drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. But
put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
As for the man who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not for disputes over opinions.
One believes he may eat anything, while the weak man eats only vegetables. Let not
him who eats despise him who abstains, and let not him who abstains pass judgment
on him who eats; for God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on the
servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be
upheld, for God is able to make him stand.
GOSPEL Matthew 6:14-21
The Lord said, "If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive
your trespasses. And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they
disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they
have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,
that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your
Father who sees in secret will reward you. Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on
earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up
for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where
thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be
also."
NO MEMORIALS UNTIL MYRRH BEARER SUNDAY
Memorial services will not be celebrated on Sundays until after the
Sunday of Thomas (April 19). Forty-day memorials are allowed, except for Palm Sunday, Pascha and Sunday of Thomas. The Church
offers three Saturdays of Souls (Ψστοσάββατα) — as alternatives
for celebrating memorials during this period. Fr. Taso and Fr. James
are available to perform weekday trisagion cemetery memorials
throughout this period — with the exception of Holy Week.

Resurrectional Apolytikion
When the women Disciples of the Lord
had learned from the Angel the joyful message of the Resurrection and had rejected
the ancestral decision, they cried aloud to
the Apostles triumphantly: Death has been
despoiled, Christ God has risen, granting
His great mercy to the world.
Apolytikion of St. Nicholas
As rule of the faith and picture of gentleness,
and teacher of temperance you were exhibited to your flock, by the truth of the evidence,
Thus you acquired the lofty through humility, abundance through poverty. Father and
Hierarch Nicholas, intercede with Christ our
God, that our souls may be saved.
Kontakion
O guide to wisdom, provider of prudence,
disciplinarian of fools, and defender of the
poor, fortify and discipline my heart, O
Master; You, give me a word, O Word of
the Father. For behold, I will not hinder
my lips from crying to You: O merciful
Lord, have mercy on me who have fallen.

1ST & 2ND FINDING
OF THE HEAD OF
JOHN THEBAPTIST
The first finding came
to pass during the 4th
century, through a
revelation of the holy
Forerunner to two
monks, who came to
Jerusalem to worship our Savior's Tomb. One of them
took the venerable head in a clay jar to Emesa in Syria.
After his death it went from the hands of one person to
another, until it came into the possession of a certain
priest-monk named Eustathius, an Arian. Because he
ascribed to his own false belief, the miracles wrought
through the relic of the holy Baptist, he was driven from
the cave in which he dwelt, and by dispensation forsook
the holy head, which was again made known through a
revelation of Saint John, and was found in a water jar, in
the days of the Emperor Theodosius the Younger.
FORGIVENESS SUNDAY
The Holy Fathers have appointed the commemoration
of Adam's exile from the Paradise of delight on the eve
of the Forty-day Fast, demonstrating to us how beneficial fasting is for man, and how harmful and destructive
are insatiety and the transgressing of the divine commandments. For the first commandment that God gave
to man was that of fasting, which the first-fashioned
received but did not keep; and not only did they not
become gods, as they had imagined, but they lost even
that blessed life which they had, and they fell into corruption and death, and transmitted these and innumerable other evils to all of mankind. The God-bearing Fathers set these things before us today, that by bringing to
mind from what we have fallen , and what we have
suffered because of the disobedience of the firstfashioned, we might be diligent to return again to that
ancient bliss and glory by means of fasting and obedience to all the divine commands. Taking occasion from
today's Gospel (Matt. 6:14-21) to begin the Fast unencumbered by enmity, we also ask forgiveness this day,
first from God, then from one another and all creation.

COOKING FOR THE NEEDY
Saint Nicholas Kitchen is an outreach ministry which provides a hot
meal and fellowship to those in need. Volunteers for cooking, serving
meals and cleanup between 8:00 am and 1:00 pm - along with
monetary donations for purchase the food - are welcome and needed.
Your assistance helps feed approximately 100 people every Monday.
Please call Chris Palaidis at (727) 808-3895 for further information.
MEMORIAL WHEAT / KOLLYVA
Kollyva for memorials (μνημόσσνα) may be ordered through:
 Antonia Korfias (727-937-8785)
 Evangelia Stavropoulos (727-937-5649)
 Irene Koutelas (727-934-5245)
It may, of course, also be prepared by the family of the deceased.
Contact information for these preparers is provided as a service to
parishioners and does not imply endorsement of their product quality
or fees. Kindly be reminded that all memorial services must be
scheduled — at least two weeks in advance — with the parish office.
PHILOPTOCHOS CLEAN MONDAY LUNCHEON
St Nicholas Philoptochos will host a traditional Clean Monday (Kathara
Deftera) luncheon at 12:30 pm in Fr Tryfon Hall. Bring a favorite dish
to share and join us as we embark on the Great 40-day Fast.
PASCHAL SEASON DECORATIONS
If you would like to contribute to the floral decoration of our Cathedral for Great Lent and Holy Week, kindly drop off your monetary gift
at the parish office or call 727-937-3540 to pay by credit card.
THEMIS ADAMANTIDIS CONCERT
Please note that the February 27 concert is a private commercial venture and that the parish administration has stipulated that it not begin
until after that day’s Salutations service. Entertainments of this sort
are not recommended for observant Orthodox Christians during Lent.
However it is realized that non-Orthodox and non-observant Greek
Orthodox would attend events of this sort regardless of where they
take place and that the rental income from this event provides badly
needed funds for the running and maintaining the Community Center.

TEACHING RESPECT FOR THE HOLY EUCHARIST
It is often difficult to prepare children for Liturgy. However, there is
little excuse for missing Liturgy entirely and still expecting to receive
Communion after distribution of the antidoron. This is especially true
given that we celebrate two Liturgies most Sundays. Consequently,
parishioners are asked to note that, effective immediately, no one will
be communed outside of Liturgy except for the very old and/or infirm
- or as the result of a dire emergency. Using the excuse that “it was
hard getting the children ready today” will no longer suffice. We teach
our children to be on time for all sorts of activities - surely teaching
them to be on time - and to thus show respect for - the Eucharist
should be at the top of that list!

Souls in Exile: Reflections on the Century After the
Armenian Genocide, 1915-2015
Tuesday, February 24, 7:00 pm, Matheos Hall
409 Old Coachman Road, Clearwater, FL 33763
Sophia Manoulian Kugeares, Adjunct Professor of Humanities, St. Petersburg College, the
daughter of a Survivor of the Armenian Genocide, 1915-1922, will present a survey of key facts
about the Genocide, the meaning of survival, and the world-wide recognition and understanding
of Genocide in commemoration of the 100th Anniversary.
Generally forgotten in the panorama of world history, the events leading up to the Genocide are
being revisited in recent years by scholars, historians and policy makers all over the world.
Along with a growing number of experts, Kugeares believes that awareness of modern genocides needs to be raised for the good of the global community. The displacement of thousands
of families, death marches, population exchanges, historical records, international government
documents, and the continued denial by a succession of modern Turkish governments all factor
into a dynamic field of study. This presentation will survey the most important historic Genocide
events, and describe the numerous global commemorative events taking place throughout
2015. The program will be valuable not only to descendants of Armenians, Greeks and others
ethnic peoples who suffered and survived the Genocide, but to those who wish to learn more
about the horrific events that shaped the world we live in today.
If we have the faith to dive in head-first.
Our Epiphany celebration draws attention from around
the world. But at the root of this holy day is a baptism. In
baptism, submergence in water represents death to the
old ways of sin, and what follows is a resurrection — a rebirth to a new life in Christ. While Orthodox Christians
are baptized only once, as a community we commemorate Christ’s baptism every year. What better time to renew your life in Christ? What better way than through
stewardship? www.stnicholastarpon.org/stewardship
We are stewards of the first catch.
