SUNDAY OF ORTHODOXY
ΚΥΡΙΑΚΗ ΤΗΣ ΟΡΘΟΔΟΞΙΑΣ
The First Sunday of Great Lent -Sunday
To the left of the icon are Patriarch
Methodios, Bishop Michael Synnadon, and
Patriarch Tarasios.
of Orthodoxy
Empress Theodora, who proclaimed the veneration of
icons, is depicted to the right of the icon. Theodora's son
Michael III.
The icon of the Virgin Hodegetria, depicting the
Theotokos as the "
“Directress"
, is processed
amongst the people and held on high by two
angels.
This Sunday commemorates the return of the Icons into the
churches, according to the decision of the Seventh Ecumenical Synod (787). The Church determined that this celebration
would take place each year on the first Sunday of Lent, as the Sunday of Orthodoxy, starting March 11, 843. On
this Sunday every year the triumph of the faith of Orthodoxy is celebrated with ceremony. The Icon of Christ,
according to St. John Damascus, is a distinct affirmation and a reminder of the fact of His Incarnation, which
has a vital significance for the salvation of the faithful, an affirmation, which prevails to
this day in the Orthodox Church. The celebration of the day includes the procession with
the Icon of Christ around the inside of the church with pomp and reverence. The Sunday of
Orthodoxy calls upon the people to rededicate themselves to the deep meaning of their faith
and to declare in unison, "One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all".
1. What do we celebrate on this Sunday? 2. When did this event occur?
3. Who said icons would be venerated? 4. Who holds up the icon of our
Theotokos? 5. How do we celebrate on this 1 st Sunday of Great Lent in our church?

Having learned the joyful proclamation of the
Resurrection from the Angel, and having cast off
the ancestral condemnation, the women disciples
of the Lord spake to the Apostles exultantly:
Death is despoiled and Christ God is risen,
granting great mercy to the world.

We worship Thine immaculate icon, O Good
One, asking the forgiveness of our failings, O
Christ our God; for of Thine own will Thou wast
well-pleased to ascend the Cross in the flesh, that
Thou mightest deliver from slavery to the enemy
those whom Thou hadst fashioned. Wherefore,
we cry to Thee thankfully: Thou didst fill all
things with joy, O our Saviour, when Thou
camest to save the world.

As rule of the faith and picture of gentleness, and

intercede with Christ our God, that our souls may

40-DAYS BABY BLESSING
For your convenience we are letting you know that you can make an appointment to church
your baby on the 40th day after its birth, no matter what day that might be. There is no reason
that you have to inconvenience the mom and the baby, waiting in the back of the Narthex until
the priest is available on a Sunday ONLY. Make an
appointment to come to church when it is convenient for
you at a time that will not disrupt the baby's routine. ANY
day you would like. 9am through 6pm by appointment.
Bring the entire family or come just with your husband and
the baby. Whatever you want. No waiting no inconvenience.
More private time with the priest to talk about the future
baptism if you wish. Call the office 727-937-3540 for an
appointment.

Πιστεύεις, επειδή σου είπα πως σε είδα κάτω

Έπειτα του λέει: Σας το τονίζω και να είστε

Θεού ν ανεβαίνουν και να κατεβαίνουν προς

ΤΗΕ EPISTLE
THE GOSPEL
St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews
12:1-10
The Reading is from John
1:43-51
BRETHREN, since we are surrounded by so
great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside
every weight, and sin which clings so closely,
and let us run with perseverance the race that
is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer
and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that
was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand
of the throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. In your struggle against sin you have
not yet resisted to the point of shedding your
blood. And have you forgotten the exhortation
which addresses you as sons? "My son, do not
regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor
lose courage when you are punished by him.
For the Lord disciplines him whom he loves,
and chastises every son whom he receives." It
is for discipline that you have to endure. God
is treating you as sons; for what son is there
whom his father does not discipline? If you are
left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children
and not sons. Besides this, we have had earthly
fathers to discipline us and we respected them.
Shall we not much more be subject to the Father.
At that time, Jesus decided to go to Galilee.
And he found Philip and said to him, "Follow
me." Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city
of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael,
and he said to him, "We have found him of
whom Moses in the law and also the prophets
wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."
Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good
come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him,
"Come and see." Jesus saw Nathanael coming
to him, and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite
indeed, in whom is no guile!" Nathanael said
to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when
you were under the fig tree, I saw you." Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the son
of God! You are the King of Israel!" Jesus answered him, "Because I said to you, I saw you
under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall
see greater things than these." And he said to
him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see
heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man."
