Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral Tarpon Springs, Florida Sunday, March 9, 2014 SUNDAY OF ORTHODOXY ΚΥΡΙΑΚΗ ΤΗΣ ΟΡΘΟΔΟΞΙΑΣ The First Sunday of Great Lent -Sunday To the left of the icon are Patriarch Methodios, Bishop Michael Synnadon, and Patriarch Tarasios. of Orthodoxy Empress Theodora, who proclaimed the veneration of icons, is depicted to the right of the icon. Theodora's son Michael III. The icon of the Virgin Hodegetria, depicting the Theotokos as the " “Directress" , is processed amongst the people and held on high by two angels. This Sunday commemorates the return of the Icons into the churches, according to the decision of the Seventh Ecumenical Synod (787). The Church determined that this celebration would take place each year on the first Sunday of Lent, as the Sunday of Orthodoxy, starting March 11, 843. On this Sunday every year the triumph of the faith of Orthodoxy is celebrated with ceremony. The Icon of Christ, according to St. John Damascus, is a distinct affirmation and a reminder of the fact of His Incarnation, which has a vital significance for the salvation of the faithful, an affirmation, which prevails to this day in the Orthodox Church. The celebration of the day includes the procession with the Icon of Christ around the inside of the church with pomp and reverence. The Sunday of Orthodoxy calls upon the people to rededicate themselves to the deep meaning of their faith and to declare in unison, "One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all". 1. What do we celebrate on this Sunday? 2. When did this event occur? 3. Who said icons would be venerated? 4. Who holds up the icon of our Theotokos? 5. How do we celebrate on this 1 st Sunday of Great Lent in our church? 1 THE MISSION OF THE ST. Having learned the joyful proclamation of the Resurrection from the Angel, and having cast off the ancestral condemnation, the women disciples of the Lord spake to the Apostles exultantly: Death is despoiled and Christ God is risen, granting great mercy to the world. We worship Thine immaculate icon, O Good One, asking the forgiveness of our failings, O Christ our God; for of Thine own will Thou wast well-pleased to ascend the Cross in the flesh, that Thou mightest deliver from slavery to the enemy those whom Thou hadst fashioned. Wherefore, we cry to Thee thankfully: Thou didst fill all things with joy, O our Saviour, when Thou camest to save the world. As rule of the faith and picture of gentleness, and teacher of temperance you were exhibited to your flock, by the truth of the evidence, Thus you acquired the lofty through humility, the abundant through poverty. O Father and Hierarch Nicholas, intercede with Christ our God, that our souls may be saved. To you, Theotokos, invincible Defender, having been delivered from peril, I, your city, dedicate the victory festival as a thank offering. In your irresistible might, keep me safe from all trials, that I may call out to you: "Hail, unwedded bride!" 4 PRAYER LIST If you would like us to remember you or your loved one in our prayers, please contact the office. 6 ΤΗΕ EPISTLE THE GOSPEL St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 12:1-10 The Reading is from John 1:43-51 BRETHREN, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you forgotten the exhortation which addresses you as sons? "My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor lose courage when you are punished by him. For the Lord disciplines him whom he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives." It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers to discipline us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father. At that time, Jesus decided to go to Galilee. And he found Philip and said to him, "Follow me." Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael, and he said to him, "We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!" Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the son of God! You are the King of Israel!" Jesus answered him, "Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these." And he said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man." 7 8 St. Stefanos Philoptochos Presents: A Lenten Retreat Saturday, March 22, 2014 Guest Speaker – His Eminence Metropolitan Nikitas St. Stefanos Greek Orthodox Church 3600 76th Street N, St. Petersburg, FL 33710 727-345-8235 Schedule 9:30am-10:30am Divine Liturgy 10:30am-11:00am Refreshments and Registration 11:00am-12:15pm Session 1 12:15pm-1:00pm Lenten Lunch 1:00pm-2:15pm Session 2 2:15pm-3:00pm Questions/Answers and Conclusion Registration - $10.00 ____________________________________________________________ Please complete and return this portion with your check of $10.00 per person made out to St. Stefanos by TUESDAY, MARCH 18TH, Attention: Lenten Retreat.
